Music Draft - Rolling Stone Greatest 500 Songs Garbage List - Now with unhealthy regional pork-stuffs! (2 Viewers)

Someone was sorting the playlist when I went in there to copy & paste the list here, so I ran away. I was going to put them in reverse RS order. If it's too much a pain, don't sweat it

Not a pain at all.  I'll do it.  Maybe I'll put these together tomorrow while watching football and trying to avoid interacting with my SIL.

Great song and reminds me of that Jarmusch movie where the European woman only listens to that song. Even walking down the street with a boom box playing it. She’s so cool.

Stranger than Paradise- just thought of the movie.

Love that movie.  Of course.

I'm just catching up and noticed the spreadsheet hasn't been updated in a bit.  I'll do that now to avoid any confusion.  Also it looks like cos might have jumped the line?  I'll sort it out and fix everything.

I ended up with a pretty diverse lineup here

I Walk the Line    -    Johnny Cash    -    1956
Stand by Me    -    Ben E. King    -    1961
Paint It Black    -    The Rolling Stones    -    1966

I’ll Take You There    -    Staple Singers    -    1972
Born to Run    -    Bruce Springsteen    -    1975
Lust for Life    -    Iggy Pop    -    1977
I Will Survive    -    Gloria Gaynor    -    1978
Blue Monday    -    New Order    -    1983
Rhythm Nation    -    Janet Jackson    -    1989
Killing Me Softly with His Song    -    The Fugees    -    1996
Everlong    -    Foo Fighters    -    1997
Say My Name    -    Destiny’s Child    -    1999

299 - I Put a Spell on You / Screamin' Jay Hawkins - 1956

I am so glad you guys let me get most of the blues standards on the list. I don't know whether y'all don't like them or are just unfamiliar with them., but I'm thrilled with my results. link ,or  maybe you'll prefer the original over-the -the top music video version
I'm the other one who picks in this group, not Doug B.

May I have this, please?  The other thing is purely offensive.

Sorry cos, but she's right about this, and she was in line ahead of you.  I've given this to her.

Good news, though!  You get some called "Grindin" by Clipse.  Or "Clipse" by Grindin.  Who can say, really?

It goes places...good places...and takes you with him.

That Aaliyah song I ended up with is only a few minutes, but goes nowhere. I was bored about 30secs in. I like beats and rhythm and minimalism, but this one set up the hook in the first seconds and just repeats it until the end of the song. No dynamics, no shifts, nothing. Unless there's some kind of cultural importance to the song- and I get that she died tragically and young- I really don't see or understand the significance or worth to include it in any top 500.

Maybe tasker or 80s can offer some insight.
Yeah, l listened to that and Single Ladies by Beyonce a time and a half and decided Beyonce was a lot less worse than Aaliyah

There are only two songs left in the block I'm compelled to pick from. I go before the other person in order, so I might as well go ahead and select...

Round 20.07 - Craig Mack - Flava In Your Ear (422) - 1994

This song is actually really well-known for its intra-label remix starring Biggie and others. It was one of the first times that a label had released a song then released another version of the same song with guest rappers and a slightly altered beat. It was Bad Boy's first of this nature and paved the way for other remixes, which became a standard hip hop practice.

That leaves Yo Mama with RUN D.M.C., which is a fine and fitting choice for him.

Actually, Yo Mama...your choice. Whichever one you want. I more just wanted to talk about the significance of the remix in this instance. It's probably why the song made the list, even though they didn't include the appropriate version.

Thanks to everyone for participating and to k4 for running the draft. It was fun.
I was going to take the version with Biggie too if I ended up with this one. I’m perfectly fine with Run DMC (and would have been good with Buffalo Stance) so the choice is yours.

I know you're kidding, but it's "Grindin'" by Clipse. That album is produced by The Neptunes (Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo) and is pure fire. The track was otherworldly for its time, a sparse drum beat and minimalist structure surrounded by rapping.

So I can get with this?

No sweat either way. I'll take the Flava, I guess.

Nice.  I'll put it on my "to listen" list.

So that leaves me with my final selection:

#406 - Sucker MCs - Run DMC

Because you're bitin' all your life, you're cheatin' on your wife
You're walkin' 'round town like a hoodlum with a knife
You're hangin' on the ave, chillin' with the crew
And everybody know what you've been through

(Some great lines on this song, but that’s my favorite)

I am super-excited to get this happiest of Happy Greens and also to add another woman to my playlist.  I think I've taken more women in this draft than any other.  That probably means like four of them, but it's a start!  (I probably should have kept a list of my picks.)

Big Mama Thornton - Hound Dog  (#318)

19.22 The Crystals - Da Doo Run Run (#366)

Fun little ditty that isn’t Cher. Somehow I hear that Cher song at least once a month and then it gets stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

Which leaves me with

20.21 - Drake - Hotline Bling (#373)

Drake's not a big favorite but it's great that Jimmy isn't paralyzed anymore. The song reminds me of all the times women called me for sex at 2 in the morning.

The song is built on a sample of Timmy Thomas' "Why Can't We Live Together" which wouldn't have been out of place on the RS list.

ok that's great. i'm sure it was fun to put them in order. but i keep looking at the front page for the next draft. don't you have something better to do dice man?

I've updated the first post I think with all the playlists, but if I missed someone while quickly catching up the past couple of days, please let me know.
I haven't decided on the sequencing of mine and won't until I know what final song I'm being left with. I'll let you know as soon as I have it done.

@cosjobs
CTRL + F "krista4" on the first page of the spreadsheet. 😆

I figured I might end up with this because most people are less familiar with it than the others remaining in that bloc. And that woulda been great, as it was a No Hesitation.

This song is the pinnacle, the climax, of every single Buffalo area wedding.  I live within audible distance of a local wedding venue.  Every Friday and Saturday night (when the weather is nice enough to have an outdoor wedding reception), I can hear this song blasting at like 10:30-10:45 PM, with every wedding patron singing it.
Sitting on the back porch having a cigar, and the sound of 150 drunk wedding patrons singing this song filling the air.

I deny these allegations.  The last time I went to the I-Beam was in the mid-80s.

You're delusional.
Think the last show I saw at the I-Beam was either the Beatnigs or Disposable Heroes of Hiphporisy, in 89 or 90..forget who Franti was with at the time, but I think it was the latter.

probably Disposable Heroes, as it was just Michael and Rono on stage.

So here's where we are:

The following people have their last pick determined by process of elimination and can post it whenever:

@fatguyinalittlecoat

@timschochet

@Binky The Doormat

@Eephus

@landrys hat

That leaves myself and @Doug B with the same bloc to choose from. He's ahead of me in the draft order but is on permaskip. Since this is the last round, I'll give him the rest of the night and will skip him if he still hasn't picked by the time I get online tomorrow morning.

Thanks to @krista4 , @Pip's Invitation and others who kept this draft running.  And @Northern Voicefor those great spreadsheets, especially sheet 3.

This was a fun and challenging draft.  Enjoyed it a lot and I'm very happy with my playlist.  For the most part it's a playlist that represents the musical timeline of my life pretty well given the songs available to choose from--although my last 20 years were not well represented.  I listen to a helluva lot of post-2000 music, the post-2000 songs on this RS list were mostly not in my wheelhouse.

I do look forward to @Northern Voice's Pitchfork 500 and @Eephus's Acclaimed Music song drafts.

I’ll scoop up “Every Breath You Take” as my last pick. Good tune, just overfamiliar — The Police have many better ones to my tastes these days.

That leaves “Leader of the Pack” to Pip.

That leaves “Leader of the Pack” to Pip.
Indeed it does.

20.22 Leader of the Pack -- The Shangri-Las (#316, bloc 301-325)

This bloc was my deepest, with 22 out of 25 No Hesitation songs, and two others that I would have been fine with being left with. So it was always likeliest to be saved for last.

The song, written by George "Shadow" Morton, Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, belongs to the '60s genre of Teenage Death Songs, but is far better than most of its ilk. It is an extraordinary recording, down to the call-and-response vocals, the pounding piano, the thumping percussion and the motorcycle sounds (accounts differ on whether it was a real motorcycle or a sound effects recording.)

Fun fact: Billy Joel claims he played on a demo of this song, but isn't sure if his playing ended up on the final track. However, check out the percussion and some other touches here and compare them to his "Say Goodbye to Hollywood." I would say he had this song in mind when he wrote that one.

Fun fact 2: The song was used in Goodfellas and is a candidate for Eephus' Songs Used in Movies draft if we ever have it.

This is a fun, cool rambunctious song, precursor to the B52s, GoGos
