I think this is correct. As much as I want to see CONCACAF do well, I think this is a bit misleading. If Mexico and US were going to pick up points, it was going to be most likely in the first game. Obviously Costa Rica was a huge win for the region. But the start gives CONCACAF a chance to stay ahead of both Asia and Africa in the hopes no one comes looking for our extra 1/2 qualifying spot.

Confederation Records So Far*: (W-D-L)

South America: 4-0-2
Africa: 1-1-2
UEFA: 2-0-3
Concacaf: 3-0-1
Asia: 0-1-2

I was going to say something similar. I think Blatter's re-election has infinitely more influence on WC spots than 2014 record.

 
Here is the viewership for the 4 US games from WC 2010 if people are interested (these are the combined English and Spanish numbers).

The two ABC games were weekend games. I think last nights game will easily top both of the ESPN games from WC2010.

6/12/2010 US vs England 17.1 million (ABC/Univision)
6/18/2010 US vs Slovenia 7.5 million (ESPN/Univision)
6/23/2010 US vs Algeria 8.6 million (ESPN/Univision)
6/26/2010 US vs Ghana 19.4 million (ABC/Univision)

We used to have a lot of offshore rigs in Gabon, Congo, Angola and Cote D'Ivoire.

sadly, as you know, sports get the short end of the stick here. Nielsen does not account for group watching which is why most people thinks sports TV ratings tend to be under reported because they are one of the few events that people gather for to watch.

Look at the link Premier just posted about all the huge gatherings across the country. The crowds at some of the outdoor viewing places were amazing.

They beat Burkino Faso in the playoffs to get in.

Their group was Mali, Benin, Rwanda (not quite a murders row :) )

It would be surprising to me if they were better than Ghana or Ivory Coast but I will admit that I have not seen them play to really be sure.

ah... that's what I figured.

That kind of group probably goes a long ways towards explaining their "high" ranking (relative to Ghana and Ivory Coast) according FIFA.

And even a guy who would place soccer among his fifth favorite sport gets chills seeing that. Something larger than self. I'm from Hartford, so when they switched to Hartford I was all excited...

Then I saw it was a private dinner with the USWNT. Oh well. That's Hartford for you. Last time the World Cup came around, the loudest cheers downtown were for the Bieber concert that week. You've never heard anything like it, I swear.

They finished bottom of their group at AFCON 2013. They were unfortunate to only come away with one point in the WC 2010 groups but it's hard to go through without scoring a goal.

Pretty sure Algeria was the African side we most wanted to be drawn in with - that they are regarded as the weakest African side. :shrug:

Thinking about this game makes we wish I had waffles for breakfast :(

This Belgian team has the potential to be very good for a very long time:

Courtois -- 22 yo

De Bruyne -- 22 yo

Fellaini -- 26 yo

Dembele -- 26 yo

Hazard -- 23 yo

Lukaku -- 21 yo

Januzaj -- 19 yo

Witsel -- 25 yo

Chadli -- 24 yo

Alderweireld -- 25 yo

Even Kompany and Vertonghen are only 28 and 27 yo, respectively. In fact, other than Van Buyten at 36 yo, Kompany is the oldest at 28. And their oldest/most experienced players are all in the defensive unit, which is how I'd like my team to be composed.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them make a very, very deep run in this year's tournament and they should be a huge force in 2018.

 
That will open things up - terrible foul - Algerian would have had to make a heck of a play to get a good shot off with the heat that was on the cross.

 
truly shambolic defending...I did love the view of the ref calling the PK before the Algerian even hit the ground.

That cross was better than anything the Ghanaians did yesterday.
