I think it's honestly kind of odd the fascination soccer folks seem to have taking video of themselves watching games.

Sure, it's nice to see a bunch of happy people. But no where near "chills" or "tearing up".

People are serious about tearing up for these?

Maybe they do. I've just never seen them referred to like soccer folks do. Seems like the futbolguys are more interested in taking video of fans watching fans than other sports are. Just an observation. :shrug:

I could be wrong, and it probably varies by stat source, but I think possession stats are based on number of completed passes.

When you are watching a football match every once in a while you'll see flashed up on the screen a statistic showing how much "ball possession" each team has had. Opta explains how this statistic is computed:

[T]here are several data providers out there in the UK and across the world monitoring games, from TV companies themselves for live games, to specialists like Opta.

Each has their own method of working out possession. Some use calculations based on the data, but most use a chess clock approach where each team has a button which is hit when they are in possession. Some do this in the broadcast truck, others have analysts who call it out and inputters who hit the buttons.

Opta used this method originally, but the problem we found with a chess clock approach for time is that you are reliant on the person logging the data remembering to hit the button and the person doing it usually has other tasks to perform and other data to log.

Missing a couple of switches obviously skews the possession figures and its impossible to go back and change it. It may not sound much but one minute where the clock is wrong can affect the possession figures by two to three percentage points.

Opta now record possession in a football match by means of an automated calculation based on the number of passes that a team has in a game. We have two analysts, each monitoring one of the teams and they log each event in a game, totalling between 1600 and 2000 events per match.

Each of these events has a timecode plus an xy co-ordinate and the collection system is rigorously monitored by our team of checkers.

During the game, the passes for each team are totalled up and then each teams total is divided by the game total to produce a percentage figure which shows the percentage of the game that each team has accrued in possession of the ball.

For Opta "ball possession" means percentage of completed passes, and is not a measure of time, though Opta does claim that the two are very closely related.

I think he's pretty overrated as a coach. Did nothing at Bayern, had a good run in 2006 with Germany, but his assistant Low(Germany's current manager) was the tactical guy behind that. So that's the extent of the hire for the USA team; a failed club manager and guy that can't manage a game.

This always kills me. When Klinsmann was fired from Bayern there were 5 weeks to go in the season and they were in 3rd and only 3 points out of first. Bayern had made it to the Champions League quarterfinals and lost to eventual champions Barcelona. Bayern lost in the quarterfinals in the DFB Pokal (German Cup) to Leverkusen who made it to the finals. Those aren't typical Bayern results, but they aren't nothing. He did do something, and that is whyhe was let go. He had a different style and attitude on training and managing and "those in power" at Bayern disagreed with those tactics.

that Muller nonsense is the worst. and it seems like what gets most of the non-fan's panties the most bunched.... and I can't disagree. "diving" is much more nebulous, IMO- there aren't that many obvious no-contact dives in games, but there are a lot of guys riding tackles and/or going down with minimal contact to draw the foul (don't basketball players and Wider Receivers do this too?).

and again IMO, Ronaldo dives less than he's given credit for. He's getting kicked from minute 0 to minute 93- sometimes to avoid getting kicked, he's going to go down in a way that looks like a dive.

I think I mentioned this before but I think what hurts the game is that these single decisions tend to swing the game towards one team. I don't have the stats but I'm pretty confident a red card or PK for one team typically gives them a much higher percentage to win the game. In most of the other sports that can only happen if it's one of the final plays of the games as there are typically so many plays/scoring plays that it's easier to overlook. I think they just need to do 2 things. 1. Implement replay/review on ALL pk and red card decisions and 2. Retroactively review tape and had out punishment for stuff like what Muller did. I think those two things would go a long way towards improving the perception of the sport for non-soccer fans and I think most of us who already are would not only live with the new rules but welcome them.

He had some health concerns leading up to the tournament so I assume that has something to do with it.

Tactically I thought Fellaini was the obvious sub to give them an aerial threat against this packed-in defense. And here he comes.

One of my favorite articles in the aftermath of that was Rumminegge complaining the Klinsmann asked for IPads for all the players where they could cut up video along with tactical assignments. "All Van Gaal needs is a few markers!" It's just a complaint that seems so silly today. I'll bet that Bayern bought tablets less than 18 months later.
