This game sets up well to run the other side off the pitch, but that means we can't risk starting players that might need to be removed due to injury. Start the fittest players and play route 1 football all day.

We need to run Portugal off the field and earn at least a tie. The Germany game is where you can get cute with lineup changes if the necessary points are already in hand.

Yeah, as "good" of a position as we are in right now a loss to Portugal would completely flip that on its head. We'll likely have goal differential over them but if we lose to Portugal then we have to match against Germany whatever Portugal does against Ghana, which is not a high end proposition.

As a former team captain, I would not say it is meaningless, but yeah, it does not have much meaning. Allows you to be a little more vocal with the official - but these days I see the officials putting up with crap from everyone. Back in my day most officials seemed to have very low tolerance for dissent.

I meant it was meaningless who they give it to. It does not matter.

The rules about only the captain talking to the ref are never enforced.

At any level? Joe should ask his friend with the fantastic 13yo about that.

Honestly, i think this is just mind games leading up to the match. Have the US let up a bit, and have the officials be aware of his "fragility" going into the game.

I think he will play, and play well. Which is not to say we can not bottle him up, and frustrate him, but I would not expect anything but his best effort on Sunday.
