OFFICIAL 2017 Training Camp & Preseason: News & Tidbits Thread (1 Viewer)

49ers GM John Lynch said fifth-round TE George Kittle "exceeded our expectations" at spring practices.

Kittle will open camp with a legit chance to start as a rookie. "He’s really flashed," Lynch said. "He’s got some suddenness to him in his movements. He catches the ball extremely well. George gives us something we don’t have as a playmaker down in the red zone. He is that guy who can win 1-on-1. He can impose his will and out-athlete people." Kittle showed field-stretching ability with a 15.4 yards-per-reception average at Iowa and excelled as both a run and pass blocker.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer's Mary Kay Cabot said second-year TE Seth DeValve "jumped out" at Browns OTAs and minicamp.

Mary Kay joins fellow beat writer Nate Ulrich and coach Hue Jackson as those who have heaped praise on DeValve in the past month, adding DeValve was one of "the most improved players" from 2016. DeValve was a little-known fourth-rounder out of Princeton but tore up his Pro Day and obviously had a big jump in competition coming into the NFL. Cabot thinks the Browns will use plenty of two-TE sets.

Browns' official website expects second-year TE Seth DeValve to have a "significant role" this season.

"I see Seth as a guy who is important to us and emerging," were the words of TEs coach Greg Seamon. The Browns' site joins coach Hue Jackson, the Cleveland Plain Dealer and Akron Beacon-Journal in predicting a DeValve step forward. The No. 138 overall pick of last year's draft, DeValve caught 10 passes on 92 snaps as a rookie. Despite the offseason praise, both his re-draft and Dynasty upside are capped by the presence of first-rounder David Njoku.
