Yeah, it really is the worst bullpen in the majors. Anyone who comes here will have their career ruined.Everything you've heard about Detroit's bullpen and defense? IT'S TRUE
Britton finishes. Earl Weaver philosophy: win today's game and worry about tomorrow when you get thereIf the O's score again, do you sit Britton in the 9th? Seems unorthodox, but why not save him, rather than as him to get 4 outs in a wide open game?
With a noon game tomorrow and Britton not having thrown an inning and a third to close a game all year?As I type this, the O's are now up seven. I disagree, I think you sit him. Then again, I'm on couch for a reason.Britton finishes. Earl Weaver philosophy: win today's game and worry about tomorrow when you get thereIf the O's score again, do you sit Britton in the 9th? I'm with CCC2, put Hunter in and let Britton be ready for tomorrow if needed. With a noon game tomorrow and Britton not having thrown an inning and a third to close a game all year?As I type this, the O's are now up seven. Unreal that Max would get beat upLiquid said:And Max looks like trash already. Great...
Yeah Orioles bullpen threw 74 pitches, Tigers 35.Yep, having your opponent burn through their bullpen in the first game is big.
That's one run scored for every five pitches. Very efficient effortYeah Orioles bullpen threw 74 pitches, Tigers 35.Yep, having your opponent burn through their bullpen in the first game is big.![]()

Who cares about Cruz...how about spend all that money on every bullpen free agent until they find a group that works.Seen this song and dance before. See you next year. Maybe DD can take some of the money Scherzer wouldn't take and use it on Andrew Miller and Nelson Cruz. So sick of seeing him kill us.
Well, since you put it that way...Yeah Orioles bullpen threw 74 pitches, Tigers 35.Yep, having your opponent burn through their bullpen in the first game is big.![]()

That's a good point. Now we'll see if Detroit's starting pitching depth gets them going.Rarely does a game's outcome line up so perfectly with the pre-game analysis - Orioles power bats helped them to some early runs, they hung on long enough to let their dominating bullpen shut things down, and the Tigers fell apart once Baltimore finally got past Detroit's great starting pitcher to feast on the bullpen.
I feel like I'm reading Latin here. You guys actually think about different ways to use the entire staff. Tiger fans don't like to think about that.Rarely does a game's outcome line up so perfectly with the pre-game analysis - Orioles power bats helped them to some early runs, they hung on long enough to let their dominating bullpen shut things down, and the Tigers fell apart once Baltimore finally got past Detroit's great starting pitcher to feast on the bullpen.
I heard Buck's post-game presser on the radio this morning. Turns out he had planned all along for some of the bullpen guys to go more than one inning, and he has been prepping them for that eventuality for the past couple of weeks. He said that players need to accept the reality that playoff series baseball is different from the regular season, and make the necessary adaptations. Was pretty interesting - I feel that where managers falter in the playoffs is when they ask players to do things they're unaccustomed to doing, but Buck made it clear that is his plan and that the players are aware of it.
I think Miller will be the only guy unavailable today. If Chen falters early, it will probably be Ubaldo time. If he does OK, maybe Gausman comes in as the bridge to the back end. If it comes to it, I wonder if he would try to get a full 2 innings out of Britton today.
In retrospect, Buck's use of the bullpen was the key to the game last night -- going with Miller to get through the meat of the Tigers' order even though it was only the 6th inning. And then he got lucky with the 8th inning explosion to keep Britton viable for today. He said that he still planned to send Britton out for the 9th until it got to be 40 minutes between the middle of the 8th and top of the 9th. I'm glad it turned out that way.I feel like I'm reading Latin here. You guys actually think about different ways to use the entire staff. Our plan on a daily basis is to get 7+ out of the starter, hope Joba doesn't suck that day, and hand the ball to Sloppy Joe with the bases empty. Plan B? If you see Lobstein or Albuquerque start warming up today, know that pitchers and catchers report in 131 days.
If we're going to have a chance in this series, we probably need 15 innings of solid work from Price and JV.
I feel like we have to save Anibal for long relief in Game 4. Curiously, Ausmus envisions using him for no more than 1 inning *(possibly 2 if something happens to a starter early or they end up in extra innings).
That and get the lead.If we're going to have a chance in this series, we probably need 15 innings of solid work from Price and JV.
Woof, woof. Woof, woof. That's my other dog imitation.O's have this in the bag.

Just released, and yes, that was the reason.50 minutes until game time and still no Detroit lineup? Getting back to my earlier point that managers seem to screw up in the playoffs when they start doing stuff in the moment that they haven't done in the previous 6 months, I wonder what Ausmus is doing.
Maybe he's just waiting on the health of Rajai Davis, and it's probably no big deal in the grand scheme of things, but I bet it's the first time all year there wasn't a lineup posted within an hour of game time.
Our two best defensive OF were Dirks - missed the entire season after back surgery - and Jackson, who was traded minutes before the deadline in the Price deal. Davis is the 2nd fastest OF and somewhat less of a liability than Ezekuiel Carrera. The corner OF are rated among the worst in all of MLB. Hunter is not what he once was, though JD Martinez seems adequate.Tiger fans, what are your thoughts on Davis? He looked so hurt last night as to be a liability - when Nelson Cruz goes first to third on you like that, it's not a good sign.
The ball always finds you, especially in the playoffs. So I'll predict that a key play in today's game will be an Adam Jones shot up the alley - a key run will score unless Davis can get to it, he's going after the ball and ...
Hunter was in a position to change the course of the game and had some horrible ABs. How many times is he going to swing at a ball than bounces 2 feet in front of the plate. Then you dam well the next one is going to be eye level that he will miss by a foot.1st tweet I read was wrong, looks like they swapped Nick & Al
DETROIT TIGERS
Ian Kinsler, 2B
Torii Hunter, RF
Miguel Cabrera, 1B
Victor Martinez, DH
J.D. Martinez, LF
Nick Castellanos, 3B
Alex Avila, C
Andrew Romine, SS
Rajai Davis, CF
Tillman was running on fumes after Kinsler's 15-pitch at bat (or however many it was) and Hunter followed it up with a first pitch bunt attempt that got Tillman out of the inning. I was baffled that he didn't take a pitch or two and try to work Tillman a little more.Hunter was in a position to change the course of the game and had some horrible ABs.
