Soooo Dr. John. Worst QuickFire guest judge ever?

And this is kind of related to Nina's assessment of the fake NO dude: why does every "character" in New Orleans seem like such a phony?
He had a line about "It's got that hip tang," then turned right to Padma and said "I'm always looking for some good 'tang" that made me chuckle.

Wow, has everyone just lost interest?

I always love Restaurant Wars, but last night's was the first I remembered where one team was just so clearly better that the editing didn't even try to make it suspenseful. What a disaster. I'm glad for the elimination, which was way overdue. Can't believe there wasn't any discussion shown of her attitude not to mention outright lying to the judges; they've really taken some other contestants down for much less. Good riddance.

:goodposting:

She was horrible.

I am rooting for Nina the rest of the way, she seems to be heads and shoulders above the rest.

caught up very quickly to where the season is. I didn't watch but about 20 total minutes of the last three episodes, but at least got the gist of stuff watching some of it at 4x speed.

They really pushed a narrative on RW and wouldn't let up. Primarily, because I think these people are just beyond boring and they just axed the only person that was annoying.

It's funny they don't have the money to give them prizes anymore. 2 seasons ago people were pulling cars out for doing a 20 top well. Now nobody has gotten anything more than a handshake this season.

I still don't know everyone's names. Nina's food seems solid but boring. Sort of a KevinS starter kit imo. Still in the dead weight phase of this. 5x5 instead of 4x4 RW has never worked IMO. This doesn't serve to highlight the real studs.

Oh, and I meant to note that last week, unlike every other time someone is eliminated, instead of all the other contestants moaning, "nooooooo" when she came back in, there was just silence. Clearly disliked all around.

As to this week, again just getting rid of the mediocre contestants. He was due to go a while ago.

I mentioned the exact same thing to my wife.

Someone needs to explain to me why he couldn't put his biscuits back in the oven. It takes like 20 minutes to bake them. 2 more minutes is all they needed and he sat around staring at them for at least 5.

He does that and he's got dry biscuits.
I'm not following. I will admit I turned it off at the end of the service so it's entirely possible I missed something. It was pretty clear from the edit he was a goner for the under biscuits.

FWIW for any baked goods it's always a good idea to stick an instant read thermopen in it. Look for 202 ish. That way the moisture has not boiled off yet but ensures everything has set. Much more important if cooking gluten free as the margin for error between glop and styrofoam is a matter of 2 or 3 degrees.

Tops of those biscuits were completely done. He leaves them in long enough to cook through and half the biscuit is a rock. He probably could have split them in half and placed them under the broiler with the done sides down.

decent quickfire to start this one

Now setup to cook for 500 people in a college cafeteria

:deleteshowfromdvr:

sigh.

Checked the wiki so it looks like the cocky guy from nola finally went off. No great loss.

Maybe it's because I didn't start watching Top Chef until the last 5 seasons or so (and we don't like that Masters or Desserts crap), but I'm a bit confused about all the hate I see. Is it because these challenges aren't as much about the fine culinary ability as they used to be? Asking seriously.

I've watched pretty much from the beginning and still enjoy the show.

I still like the show, but the complaint is cooking for 500 people doesn't show who is the best chef. I agree that this challenge was dumb.

Same. Seems no different to me. Not crazy about LCK though. And hope we never see the format used in last years finale again. But other than those still the same show.

Pretty pathetic to try to shame Nick in to resigning. It's a game. You are trying to beat the person next to you. He won immunity. End of story.

The two girls saying they would have resigned are weak too. Integrity? Nah, just sour grapes. Integrity is saying this is a game and I would not be in this position had I cooked a better dish then Nick at the quickfire.

Bizarro world on display.

Yeah I laughed at the two girls saying they would resign if they were in his position. :lmao: bull####

Easy for them to make that claim when they don't have to make the decision. BTW, there have been many times that the person with immunity "would have gone home" and I don't recall anyone trying to guilt the person into giving up their immunity.

I had no problem with them dangling the resignation in front of him. 10 plates on the table and the unquestionable bottom two had his name on them. Couple that with the theme (french) being his forte... :bye:

I'm glad that he blew up what was a stupid format for a challenge. It's really frustrating when this situation happens and Tom is usually oblivious to it. (He will simultaneously argue both sides... "It's your teammate, you have to step in and stop him" and "It's your dish, you have to cook it the way you want") I hope what happened last night affects future seasons, as it shouldn't have happened.

As far as asking him to resign, that's dumb. Everyone hates doing dessert on Top Chef, if he didn't have immunity he might not have done that course at all. Same with the dumb nest... if he was at risk he may have been more open to dumping it. Plus... It wasn't even their food.... the whole concept, flavor profile, etc., was set by the "expert". Last night was an episode of "Top Sous Chef" and no one should have gone home for perfectly executing what turned out to be a bad design that they were forced to use. (Imagine an episode of Top Chef where two teams have to execute the menus of, on one side, Anthony Bourdain, and on the other side, Chef Boyardee. Team Boyardee makes bland simple pasta exactly like he says because they can't change anything because Chef Boyardee selected all the ingredients. Why should they be criticized for that?) I mean, the one expert was micromanaging down to the level of how to make the knife cuts. Where did anyone have any chance to really do their own thing?

I imagine the "expert" laid out the menu, and Stephanie & Shirley took a look at it and said "We're not touching dessert, and Chocolate Chicken in a Nest sounds like crap, we don't want anything to do with that, either. Nick, you have immunity, want to tackle those for us?" Can't turn it back on him later when the thing bombs.

Exactly. Much easier said then done. That was one of the more intense judges table we've seen though.

####, it just happened like 2-3 weeks ago with Carrie.

What Sarnoff said. Dont hate the player hate the game, and change it so you don't have to guilt a player into resigning. Total BS.

i was thinking the same thing...must be testament to how poor his dishes were....I still think he will rebound and be in the top three.

Yeah when it gets down this late they should take immunity off the table. Give an advantage to the quick fire winner.

Both great postings.

What got lost in the shuffle was the showdown between the experts/coaches. The Spanish guy refused to even try that one Nick dish :lmao:

That disk along with several others she suggested looked flat out bad. I agree with him.

Producers ####ed that up but I guess they wound up with compelling tv. I don't think he should have caved and thinks its BS that everyone including Pepin and Tom were trying to pressure him into quitting.

I don't see why they couldn't just change things on the fly and save everybody for a week or having some cookoff to break the tie between the two women.

Giving out immunity in a team challenge with such small teams made this so easy to happen.

Awful format and imo designed to create exactly this ####storm. In the past when they do immunity late they did it on an odd number and let that person sit the challenge out completely

Apparently there was one on new years day that aired. I assume I didn't miss anything skipping that one. I didn't even really figure out someone was missing until halfway through.

The back and forth between the spanish and french chef that I hadn't heard of was pretty funny.

Zapruder-ing the footage, unless they played the shot of Nick putting the quinoa in the oven backwards (i.e., it was the shot of him taking it out, reversed, to make it look like it was going in), the dial was set at 500. I'm not talking about the close-up of the dial (no context to prove when it was filmed), but, the shot of him actually putting it in the oven, the dial has a white mark at about 4 o'clock which is where 500 is. Now, looking closer, it appears that 250 is on the exact opposite side of the dial, so, he may have thought it was set for one but it was really set for the other.

Kogi Truck chef pulled no punches. "Y'all straight up f###ing sucked." But his criticism of Shirley was kinda forced. Like, he had to come up with something bad to say about her po boy just to make it "everyone was terrible," but the best he could come up with was "Your food was good, but it didn't tell me about your culture," which is a BS complaint because how does he know what she grew up with?

"You all have to cook from within and tell your story to be Top Chefs" is an odd message to be sending the very next day after "Being Top Chef is all about being able to execute someone else's dish (including their corn-silk birds-nest)" that last week's episode was all about.

Roy Choi takes himself WAY too serious. Dude, your making street tacos...not painting the Sistine Chapel. Stop talking so much about putting your #### soul, your story, and your culture in the food.

I've never heard someone's story from eating a taco.

I agree. You cant tell #### about someone's background by eating their food. You can tell if they are a good cook or not.

The whole thing was bull. They sent him in there to say #### to the chefs about not representing themselves so Jon Favreau could come in and tie it into the theme to his movie and "finding your voice".

Seriously. Shut up and cook you doosh.

I really dislike Nick. If I were the Mexican dude, I would #### with Nick just to piss him off.
Ehh, up until last night Carlos has been the ####. But yeah, last night Nick was the annoying one.

Brian was very obvious as soon as we heard boneless skinless. No way was Tom letting that go.
