I'm glad that he blew up what was a stupid format for a challenge. It's really frustrating when this situation happens and Tom is usually oblivious to it. (He will simultaneously argue both sides... "It's your teammate, you have to step in and stop him" and "It's your dish, you have to cook it the way you want") I hope what happened last night affects future seasons, as it shouldn't have happened.
As far as asking him to resign, that's dumb. Everyone hates doing dessert on Top Chef, if he didn't have immunity he might not have done that course at all. Same with the dumb nest... if he was at risk he may have been more open to dumping it. Plus... It wasn't even their food.... the whole concept, flavor profile, etc., was set by the "expert". Last night was an episode of "Top Sous Chef" and no one should have gone home for perfectly executing what turned out to be a bad design that they were forced to use. (Imagine an episode of Top Chef where two teams have to execute the menus of, on one side, Anthony Bourdain, and on the other side, Chef Boyardee. Team Boyardee makes bland simple pasta exactly like he says because they can't change anything because Chef Boyardee selected all the ingredients. Why should they be criticized for that?) I mean, the one expert was micromanaging down to the level of how to make the knife cuts. Where did anyone have any chance to really do their own thing?
I imagine the "expert" laid out the menu, and Stephanie & Shirley took a look at it and said "We're not touching dessert, and Chocolate Chicken in a Nest sounds like crap, we don't want anything to do with that, either. Nick, you have immunity, want to tackle those for us?" Can't turn it back on him later when the thing bombs.
