Paul Manafort Thread (2 Viewers)

I’m sure you read this all as you surely pay the subscription fee for Law.com <eyeroll>. On a serious note reading about this elsewhere  my impression is Ellis wants the government to get this over with. They have heaps of evidence about lavish lifestyle and properly seized evidence in squirrel nests.

Trump's former campaign chief Paul Manafort starts his trial Tuesday. Here's what you need to know

Paul Manafort, President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman, is set to stand trial on charges brought through special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe on Tuesday.

Manafort's trial on bank fraud and tax crime charges is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. ET in a U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Va., and is expected to last roughly three weeks. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges lodged against him.

Manafort faces similar charges in federal court in Washington, D.C., though that trial isn't scheduled to begin until Sept. 17.

Judges are ornery. Especially fed court judges. They snipe at lawyers all the time. Its not a huge deal. At least it doesn't seem like what the judge said today was a huge deal without having been there.

Quoted for when Tony Podesta goes on trial for some of the same crimes Manafort is charged with. Which shockingly, were committed while dealing with the exact same Ukraine Oligarchs  Nice Guys.

I like that you think anyone here gives a #### if Tony Podesta goes to prison.

Judge not amused with prosecutors.

But the Mueller team was rebuffed by Ellis when it tried to introduce photos of Manafort’s closets, filled with suits and other high-end articles of clothing. Ellis noted that those photos would eventually become fodder for the media, and called them "unnecessary" for jurors to see.

“Enough is enough. We don’t convict people because they have a lot of money and throw it around,” he said.

He also dismissed an exhibit related to Manafort's lavish spending: "All this document shows is that Mr. Manafort had a lavish lifestyle," Ellis said. "It isn't relevant."

Quoted for when this forum is screaming at the sky about Trump going after his opponents.
Tony Podesta can be drawn and quartered and all you’ll hear is “boy, that guy definitely should have just bought a hot dog stand.”

Wow. maybe try reading the two posts LITERALLY above yours.

I mean, did you just not even bother to read or figure no lie is too blatant - like that we glossed over the Judges ruling and interactions re: the word oligarch?

Don't know how people can just put stuff out like that when it's literally refuted in the above two posts... do they want to have any influence on others? Or just don't care if through so many lies, it's not even worth assuming any actual truth or value exists? and if that's the case, what's the purpose in posting, if your words hold no value?
It’s the usual talking point...the judge totally beat Mueller down (remember the same posts in pretrial issues where Trump fans boasted the same things)

I'm sure everyone is fine with Tony Podesta going to jail if he deserves it.

Quoted for when team trump finally decides they've beaten the "but Hillary" horse, not only to death, but into tartare. And serves it on some ostrich skin plates, because they're lavish af.

This particular judge is not amused with trial lawyers, but what you're pointing at is a demonstration of the Federal Rules of Evidence, which were aptly explained a page ago.

Team Trump understands that if their orange god wanted to order the investigation of Hillary that he keeps crying about that he could do it, right?   But that Trump doesn't care about facts; he cares about perception.

  see the comments above, I have no problem with this or Ellis.

I feel like Br’er Rabbit.

“Oh, no, mister President! Pleeeaaase don’t throw a Podesta in that briar patch!”
One Christmas Eve I was stuck on a bus heading from Lake Tahoe to the Reno airport that was stopped due to an accident for 5 hours, plus another 2.5 for the actual trip once we got moving again.   The bus had TV's and played a bootleg version of Song of the South with Japanese subtitles on an endless loop.   There was a guy who had lost all of his money at the casino (except for whatever he spent on the cocaine he was clearly using too much of) and was going to miss his flight.   My memory of this trip was this guy yelling incoherently on my left while I listened to "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" on my right.

These are the moments that give you a glimpse into the mentality of a certain type of Trump supporter.

They cannot fathom the concept of impartial justice, and they assume that everyone else thinks as they do.

I was just adding to the thread news from the Manafort trial that had not been posted. Evidently it struck a nerve.

Nice to see that you deleted your post from the ffa where you said "I finished" to a picture of a young teen girl with braces.

I didn't. And you have no idea what "i finished" means. I'm actually studying to be an orthodontist, and I finished analyzing all of the ways I would have done things differently to align her bite.

Why? Did you assume it was locker room talk? And that bothered you?

Now imagine he’s President.  And it’s his daughter. And he keeps saying that for years, on television, including after she’s married.

If he's guilty...then he's guilty.

I think once you've decided that you want to bang your own daughter, her marital status is pretty much a non-factor.

Yeah, I've been before Judge Ellis.  He's a stickler on this stuff.  It means absolutely nothing to the merits (particularly where, as here, he's not the trier of fact).

Speculation that Mueller's team might not call Gates, its star witness, to testify against his former boss and business partner turns out to have been hot air.

Andres said in court Thursday morning that the government fully intends to call Gates.

"We put him on the witness list," Andres said of Gates. "We have every intention of calling him as a witness."
Similar to the owner of the clothing company yesterday, Manafort's landscaper today testified that at least one invoice was a fake, that Manafort spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on landscaping, and that he was paid by international wire transfer from five different sources.

Manafort's personal bookkeeper testified today that he was dead broke in 2016.

Yet, he offered to run Trump's campaign totally for free, not even asking for expenses.

She also said she had no idea he had offshore holdings and testified that that would have been important information for her to know, since she kept his books and all.

If he sticks to the Trump administration's defense of "I forgot" he should be in the clear right?

Glad they moved on from his lavish lifestyle. Almost three days of that is overkill. So he bought an ugly and way to expensive jacket. Who cares. This book keeping stuff/forging financials is getting to things that matter.

I forgot to pay taxes on $60 million because I forgot to tell my bookkeeper about it.   I thought I was broke, so I bought $1 million in suits and rented a party pad in Trump Tower.   I'm not sure where the money came from.   I guess I'm just lucky.

It doesn’t matter in general.

It matters that his personal bookkeeper believed him to be flat broke when he bought a $20,000 ostrich jacket.

Can a lawyer just argue for jury nullification in federal court? Asking for a Reagan/Dole darling.

I get what they are trying to do but 3 days of it is overkill. Risk losing focus of the jury.

Many juries have no focus to begin with.  That’s why some lawyers try to say the same thing 1,000 times and hope they heard it once.

I don't see how a jury could convict him. We've all forgotten things
