I kind of like the QB they drafted in the 6th Driskel for dynasty. I'd been thinking he might make it in his own right before all this.

 
Heard a piping hot live take at the park today: Kaepernick has never served in the military, and thus has no right to not stand for the Anthem. Good stuff.

Nobody is oppressed in America outside of the Middle Class which keeps the poor from dying, the Seniors from expiring, and the rich free to keep lying about how great everything is for everyone. 

 
This is not a free speech issue, unless the government is fining him or something.  He deserves the crapstorm he is getting.  I doubt the CFL even wants this clown after this. 

Is it me, or the same people posting the most here are also the ones claiming this is not an important issue?

Im very much aware that some of the stances I take on this board are controversial and to most of the more conservative posters outright crazy.

And just FTR I don't spend my days trying to "corrupt" my students into thinking like I do.  Hell, I don't even tell them what political party I belong to or whom I vote for.    But I do encourage them to think, to question.  

Here is something I tell every single class at the beginning of the year:

"I believe that America is great.  And in most ways the greatest nation on earth.  BUT we are not perfect and never have been.  One of the things that makes us great is that we know we are not perfect and understand that we can make our nation better.  We can always improve.  We should take pride in our country but we should never let that blind us."

I'm not sure anybody has said that his right to free speech is being violated.  Or at least anyone with two brain cells to rub together.

It is true that it is not a 1st Amendment issue, but he does have the right to silently protest by sitting when the National Anthem is played, it is not against any law, so he does have that freedom of speech.

He is also not protected in that form of speech by the consequences of his actions, which may result in be being cut from the 49ers and not finding a job (in the short term) with another NFL team.

Is this an important issue? No, but that holds true for most of the threads in this forum.

So what is your issue you are supporting/defending here?  He did an act in protest and people called him out for being an ###.  The system worked beautifully.

Ultimately I dont think this is going to weigh too heavily as far as what happens with his professional career. If Aaron Rodgers did this, it'd have no bearing on his football career.

If he gets cut, it has to be at least 90%+ that he just isn't very good at football anymore, for whatever reason.

That is does involve freedom of speech, contrary of your claim to the contrary, although without 1st Amendment protections.

People have been bringing up the free speech angle throughout the thread.  I was pointing out it was not the issue.  What part went over your head?

You keep saying it is not a free speech issue but it is. His conduct is not against the law, and it is not entitled to 1st Amendment protection, but he does have the freedom of speech to make this symbolic gesture.

So then what is the issue?  Do you not like the backlash against him?  Do you just hate the national anthem?  What is your angle that you posting for?  To me, the system worked as designed.

People have been saying he should not have the right to do this, that this form of protest should not be allowed or should be met with violence. And the claim is that freedom of speech does not cover his actions. I keep pointing out that it does, but it is not protected under the Constitution and he will have to suffer the consequences without legal redress.

 
Is there a debate here? Guy can do what he wants, just like NFL can do what it wants and fine him or suspend him and the 9ers can do what they want and cut him, primarily for suckage but also to save 12 million or just because he ticks off fans.

Everybody here has agreed he can do it and certainly no one suggested any violence outside of one extreme analogy, but certainly was not calling for violence.  You must be reading Twitter too much.

Yes, and here it is, and it was rooting on violence. And I think if this scenario happened in real life the OP might be charged as an accessory, particularly if he is screaming something along the lines of  "Kill him! Kill him!" (he didn't specify what rooting him on involved, but one can speculate).

Nationalism is just like anything else.  There are healthy levels which are positive.  One that expresses pride in their country and respect for those who made it what it is.   And there are extreme levels which is hatred towards other countries which can be dangerous. The national anthem at ball games is clearly in the former and trying to put it in the latter is very irrational fear, IMHO.

I just hope that when the 49ers cut him it wasn't due to him not standing for the National Anthem.  Maybe this was his plan all along?

I did not see the op before it was edited.  But I have no problem condemning FC.  God knows he deserves it for something.

Kaepernick's 2016 salary was fully guaranteed by the team on April 1st. They have to pay him. At this point it would be cheaper to keep him, because if they cut him then they'll probably have to promote Jeff Driskel to the active roster (instead of sticking him on the Practice Squad).

 
The thing that bugged me most about this "protest" is that it was senseless, something an angry 16-year-old would do. It was like saying "I don't like that abortion is happening in this country, so I'm gonna take a dump on a baby on live TV." 

 
I'd be curious if a cross check was done to determine if people were consistent with posting that this was acceptable and were also supportive of people flying the confederate flag.
