I think there is a fairly simple reason that Cam Newton is so much better this season (other than getting fully healed from his injuries). He was forced to not be reliant on a single player.
Last year there was Kelvin Benjamin. Before that, it was Steve Smith. Granted, he also had Greg Olsen those years, but his arsenal was pretty much Benjamin or Smith and Olsen, with some other guys who occasionally got the ball. This year, following the injury to Kelvin Benjamin, he has been forced to read the field and find the open receiver...and he's excelled at it. The loss of Kelvin Benjamin took away the safety net that he had of simply throwing the ball into triple coverage and hoping that Benjamin would make an incredible play. This year if Ted Ginn is covered, no worries, he'll get the ball to Brown, Funchess, Cotchery, Dixon, Bersin, check downs, etc...whoever happens to be in a better position to make a play.
For the first time in his professional career he's been forced to use all of the weapons available to him and he's managed to become an incredibly complete player in the process. A lot of credit goes to Ken Dorsey for working with him, along with Ricky Proehl from the WR side.
When Kelvin Benjamin returns next year to a quarterback that now has an improved ability to fully read the field, it's going to be very nice.
