QB Cam Newton, Retired (5 Viewers)

I think there is a fairly simple reason that Cam Newton is so much better this season (other than getting fully healed from his injuries). He was forced to not be reliant on a single player.

Last year there was Kelvin Benjamin. Before that, it was Steve Smith. Granted, he also had Greg Olsen those years, but his arsenal was pretty much Benjamin or Smith and Olsen, with some other guys who occasionally got the ball. This year, following the injury to Kelvin Benjamin, he has been forced to read the field and find the open receiver...and he's excelled at it. The loss of Kelvin Benjamin took away the safety net that he had of simply throwing the ball into triple coverage and hoping that Benjamin would make an incredible play. This year if Ted Ginn is covered, no worries, he'll get the ball to Brown, Funchess, Cotchery, Dixon, Bersin, check downs, etc...whoever happens to be in a better position to make a play.

For the first time in his professional career he's been forced to use all of the weapons available to him and he's managed to become an incredibly complete player in the process. A lot of credit goes to Ken Dorsey for working with him, along with Ricky Proehl from the WR side.

When Kelvin Benjamin returns next year to a quarterback that now has an improved ability to fully read the field, it's going to be very nice.

Lot of credit is due to Mike Shula as well, who has been with Cam since the beginning. Shula was his QBs coach under Chudzinski, and then transitioned to OC with Dorsey moving in to the QBs coaching role. I've not always been the biggest fan of Shula, but Carolina bet big on Cam by sticking with coordinators and QBs coaches that provided consistency... and man has it paid off in a big, big way.

The funny thing is that is all that it takes sometimes. Rivera (and the rest of the staff) was on the hot seat early in 2012. What would the team be like if they had decided to make a change? QBs don't develop with lots of change. We've seen that happen many times and you wonder if those high draft picks were just bad or had so much change that they never really got better in one system.

What is amazing is the guy has 43 rushing TD's in 5 years. (Tied with Steve Young)

He's tied for 94th all time in rushing TD's

Here's the active players in the list

Adrian Peterson (30) - 97

Marshawn Lynch (29) - 74

Frank Gore (32) - 70
Steven Jackson (32) - 69
DeAngelo Williams (32) - 57
Chris Johnson (30) - 54
Arian Foster (29) - 54
LeSean McCoy (27) - 47
Matt Forte (30) - 45
Cam Newton (26) - 43
Jamaal Charles (29) - 42

Crazy.

Already building a potential HOF resume.

curious - why? I'm expecting him to compete for HC jobs. Just play calling, or are there other reasons to not like him?

Shula has done a remarkable 180. The OC he is now, isn't what he was to begin. Lots of people, myself included, were convinced that he couldn't figure out how to get the ball thrown in the ocean, but over time, he's figured it out. He's grown as much, if not more than Cam in his time at Carolina. I suspect JFS171 is referring to the early years. He wasn't really well liked around these parts then.

^^^

Newton is no longer an up-and-coming quarterback from a middling team. He is LeBron James in the first Cleveland run: so dominant and impactful that the rest of the sport is going to have to deal with it. Like "The King" back then, there is resentment and misunderstanding. But like James in the early years of his prime, there is no answer for him under the lights and no avoiding his persona on camera.

What I can't figure out is what is different this year from last? He has fewer weapons and seems to be getting 3-5 TDs per game consistently. Can anyone tell me what changed?
He stopped putting a towel over his head on the sidelines.
He still does that. He did it when he was at Auburn too.
It was a joke.

Some guy in the beginning of this thread said Cam didn't have a winner's body language because he would sit on the sidelines with a towel over his head.

So respectful of his skills, what he has done through his career, and leading the Panthers this year in an incredible season.

The only thing that takes away from his game is all the gloating/showboating. Football players do this all the time, especially in the heat and emotion of battle, so it's not just Cam, but when he does it it rubs me all the wrong ways, more so than others for some reason.

As a fan of his, doesn't bother me at all. He does so many good things here in Charlotte, that I 100% believe he enjoys making kids days/years by handing out the balls. If you listen to his teammates, he is absolutely a leader and if what he is doing is getting his team going (and it is), then I am all for it. I can see how other people might take it the wrong way, but he is enjoying this season and the locker room is very tight.

I'm trying to find Jared Allen's quote, but I found this article where he says he is enjoying the team and locker room and if he plays next year it will only be here. Found the article. Obviously, there is some fluff to things, but I'm pretty sure Allen is an up front guy and for him to in a matter of months get traded and then say that if he decides to play in 2016 that it would only be for the Panthers speaks volumes. That to me confirms that Newton isn't fake or showboating (i.e. I think he is genuinely having fun) that a guy, who couldn't be more different from Newton, would enjoy this locker room so much. Everything I have ever heard or read from the players has been about the team and shows how a team can play better together.

All of his antics are good-natured and aimed at the crowd. More specifically, the kids in the crowd. There's a good Charlotte Observer article today about how family-friendly the stadium is, and I really think that people from most other NFL cities miss this about the Panthers. Having grown up going to the Meadowlands, I can attest that it is like night and day - and that was at Giant games -

There were a few Seattle fans in my row yesterday and they could not believe how friendly our fans were. This has been a big point of emphasis by Jerry Richardson from day one, and it has paid off.

Visiting fans over the years have said how friendly BoA is especially for the kids. I think it's great. You can be loud and cheer for your team without the antics we hear about in other venues. I want it to be tough for other teams to come here and win. Not be #######s other fans are afraid of.

Richardson has always been up front about the guys he wants here and I think it has helped. The key leaders on the team (Newton, Davis, Olsen) are fantastic in the community. Just think about Greg Hardy. Richardson paid him the franchise contract last year ($18M) to not play a single down because of what he did. Jerry Jones signs him and calls him a team leader even after on TV fights with coaches and Dez. A guy like Burfict wouldn't be on this team. Different culture here and everyone here loves it.

Reports in Dallas are that Hardy is not well liked in the locker room.

Trying to remember the last "bad guy" the Panthers had before Hardy. Rae Carruth obviously, but who else?

Well people forget but Smitty had a moment or two. His assault in the meeting room ended a guys career. Probably should have been arrested and charged for that.

Smitty probably would have been traded or released after the Bright incident had he not been well-liked by Richardson and Fox. Instead they sent him to anger management classes. He had one slip after that with Lucas. I don't think Smith is a bad guy, but he has a bad temper he has to keep in check. Todd Sauerbrun wasn't well-liked, and was sent packing after his DUI and roid accusations. Kerry Collins wasn't a bad guy, but he was a bad alcoholic. His alcoholism really caused him a world of problems, and then Capers released him during the season when Kerry told him his heart wasn't in it. That was a weird time. I'm glad he got sober, and was able to have a nice NFL career. The Panthers really haven't had many noticeable bad seeds, but Carruth and Hardy are complete scum.

Thanks, gents, this is great additional color.

Me, I subscribe to the "act like you've been there before" credo, but if the net result is more fun and friendly atmosphere and culture, then that's the greater good.

I can see how people take it, but it really is a great atmosphere. I'm friends with an ex-Panther and see Greg Olsen and Thomas Davis often. Olsen told everyone this week that he would sign anything they had while he was at a restaurant. Davis bought hundreds of slushies one day while he was watching his son play football and he was well deserved when won the Walter Payton man of the year last year. My son (who has played in multiple leagues with Davis' son) went to Colin Cole's camp this summer and had a blast (Mike Tolbert came one day and signed stuff for the kids). Seems like the current Panthers really are a solid team and with a lot of good community guys (Olsen, Newton, Davis, Cole, Tolbert, Charles Johnson, etc.) and it would be awesome for them to win it all. This city would go nuts.

It's more of a product of his time, not Cam per say. This is coming fro a guy that remembers a time when 1st downs were not a celebration event in the NFL.

I just love everything you do on here. Your an inspiration to me

I think cam's accuracy sometimes can be an issue but he can finally see the whole field better. Ron has also let a lot of leash out and Cam is thriving because of it. I don't really mind his antics otherwise. At least he's not beating people up or anything.

I really give the coaches almost no credit.

He's better because he wasn't a finished product after one year of big time football. He got better. Mike Shula can parlay this into a HC job somewhere, hey, good for him. But I give him no credit. Cam is just special.

I remember there were discussions in preseason, after all the injuries he packed on last year, if the coaches would let him be Cam or restrict him to the pocket like every other mobile QB that came before him. They decided that would tamper too much with his mental development of the game, and just let him do his thing. Besides a fluky last season, he has shown to be one of the most durable players in the game. I give the coaches credit to let Cam be Cam.

i have one prediction for the superbowl and that is that if you have even woken from a dead sleep in a cold sweat feeling like you just fell off a five hundred and fourteen foot tall cliff and felt as tho the spirit of your long dead great uncle freddy was sitting on your bed warning you of a bad moon rising then you know what it will be like to be a defensive player for the d broncos because cam the nightmare maker destroyer of peaceful civilationzations is riding in to town and is about to burn the fn place to the ground brohans so gather your women and children lock them in the basement and hope for the best take that to the bank bromigos
