QB Kirk Cousins, ATL (3 Viewers)

I was about to ask when will they pull out Penix, but I had forgotten the falcons are somehow winning the division. So they’ll probably keep starting cousins.

Tori McElhaney
Raheem Morris on Kirk Cousins' future as QB1: "I don't think that'll be an issue." Added he never considered putting Michael Penix Jr. into the game today.

Full quote: "We have no issues with that, man. I don't think that's going to be an issue around here. That guy has carried us. That guy has gotten us to the point where we are 6-6, first place in the division, where we still have everything in front of us despite what happens today. It's up to us to bounce back and find ways to win football games, and there's no better man than 18 to go do that for us."

Off-season twitter was all about how the Kirk Cousins lead Atlanta Falcons were going to waltz through the division and the Vikings were not going to sniff the playoffs. You could not write this script any better if you are a Vikings fan and not a Kirk Crusader. Icing on the cake if they beat Atlanta next week.

Poor Atlanta now need to pray that they can find a trade partner that is good enough that Kirk will be willing to wave his no trade clause for. GMs like Terry Fontenot are hard to find.

Kirk is just good enough to compete for a playoff slot, but not good enough to go further than that.

Revenge Game incoming!!!

Will be interesting to see how Kirk handles the Vikings ever changing defensive scheme. If I were the Falcons, I would be handing it off a lot.

I'm unsure if I'm starting him (or Winston) but I did grab him in a 16-team redraft where someone cut bait. I still trust Cousins, and look at his remaining schedule after this week: at Vegas (indoors, easy opponent), versus NYG at home (again, dome, easy opponent) and then at WAS to close out the fantasy playoffs (another fairly easy opponent, hopefully weather isn't bad).

At minimum he gives me an option in case Winston stops huckin' the ball everywhere.

Post game interactions after the Vikings game are priceless.

Kirk is truly one of the class acts in the game. He may not be up for this any more as a starting QB, but he's going to be a heck of a coach someday IMO. We may question his ability on the field, but no one can question his character.

Truly a class act. If not a coach, he would probably be a great politician. As a Vikings fan, I hate that I have taken any zeal in the Penix selection or the recent losing streak. I didn't hear the fan reaction when he was introduced. Sounds like there were some boos. I definitely wouldn't have gone there.

From a primordial standpoint, there's something about not wanting to see a guy get the one thing that he's missing after accumulating so much financial wealth, and choosing the door in the '24 offseason that yielded an incremental amount more of generational wealth. To be fair, I had no idea the Vikings would be where they are this season. In addition to the money, I wouldn't fault Kirk for thinking Atlanta was as good of an opportunity to win, if not better. In some ways, it's almost more selfless to take the money over a slightly better chance at winning and on-the-field accolades.

I'm not sure there are many athletes that have ever accomplished more financially relative to their talent (this side of the rookie pay scale). After a career of crushing contract negotiations, I would love to see Kirk inexplicably finish off his career as a backup out of the love of the game and lead a deep playoff run out of nowhere. I suppose that's the Disney ending though.

I’m in a stupid league where QBs get one point per completion and Cousins was just dropped.

I lost Carr to injury and have Caleb Williams. I might be crazy and pick him up. Someone stop me.

Fully agree. It appears that the Achilles, whatever happened with his rehab/recovery, is not the same. He is either afraid or unable to leave the pocket, scramble, roll out, etc.

He's less mobile than that plastic pass/kick QB of electric football fame. Pretty easy for pass rushers and DC schemer's when you know the exact spot where the QB will be on every pass attempt.

-I'm still doing this despite the laugh emoji back but you got me to smirk pretty good on this one

I like Penix and think he's going to do well, liked him in college and despite not having a clear path, he's now got one these last 3 weeks. He leads the Falcons to 9-8/10-7 and i'd say he is going to be a lock to win the starting job in '25. I won't be surprised if some team trades for Cousins who is still better than several with jobs right now, strong back up at worst but not sure how all the money shakes out and maybe KC has had enough and ready to jump to coaching which is where folks think he's going.

Shame I won't be rooting for him to win a lot of games, despite my admiration for him, GO BUCS!

This move signifies Kirk’s Falcon career is over.

Not sure why anyone would trade for him? Maybe Atlanta pays a majority of the salary.

Outside of two games against Tampa he was brutal all year.

Should have gone to Aaron Rogers' Achilles doctor.

I can only feel but so bad for him since he'll make something like $63m THIS YEAR. But the bait and switch the Falcons did on him has to give future free agents pause at considering joining their team.

Cousins is more guilty of bait and switch than the Falcons. He sold them a Ferrari and gave them a Schwin.

So who invites him in for a tryout next year?
Raiders?
Giants?
Colts?
Panthers?
Browns?
Saints?
Niners?
Titans?
I'd say out are any teams that have a super young/undeveloped/still have faith in QB on the roster:

Colts - would be a circus and put a ton of pressure on the coaching staff, but maybe the GM don't care
Panthers - they are back in on Bryce
Niners - due to the past professed love of Kirk, and the team sorta sinking, the Kirk/Shanahan window is well behind us + they have to pay Purdy. Avoiding the circus.

You can see both sides though, right? He was coming off a difficult injury. They committed the money, but not the time necessary for him to recover.

And they blindsided him by taking a QB in the top 10. One way or another it wasn’t going to work out.

Problem is he's getting progressively worse. He did get a 14 game run which is mor than Bryce and ARich got this year.

I'm not sure why the Falcons thought he was worth the money in the first place. An already immobile QB pops an Achilles and you think that risk is worth the bazillion dollar gamble? No wonder your franchise never gets any better.

It’s weird that this news is being floated around and wonder by whom the source is. If it is the actual falcons brass it just seems weird.

What if Penix gets injured bad?

Not saying it might not happen either way… just seems like an odd time to just leak this news.

Knowing the Atlanta brass it doesn't seem weird at all.

I have been trying to figure out who benefits from this being put out now and wonder if it was cousins that leaked it. I don’t know how it behooves the falcons to have it out there now or even why they are making this decision right now, considering how much dead cap there will be. Cousins might want it to be known so that he can line up potential suitors.

Based on that Schefter tweet and story, not sure it was any kind of leak. Schefter may have just wanted to come up with a story and he asked a few GMs what they thought may happen.

Yeah I’m not sure why Cousins is guilty of anything. A team offered to pay him a bunch of money. Can’t blame him for taking it even if one is unsure why he was offered it in the first place.
