RB Jerome Ford, CLE (1 Viewer)

Hunt got $4m. Thats not backup money
It's "up to" $4mil, guessing a lot isn't guaranteed, and it's less than he made the last 2 years when he was the backup.
When he was the backup to Chubb who made a LOT more $ than him.

Don't kid yourself this is gonna be a 50/50 split. Heck it was a 60/40 split with one of the best RBs in football.
That's a bit misleading. In week 1 Ford got 8 of his opportunities after Chubb was pulled with 9 minutes left in the blowout. On Monday Chubb had 10 opportunities to only one for Ford before getting hurt.

With Chubb healthy the opportunity split was 32 to 8.
I wouldnt expect anything different. Chubb (when healthy) is a Pro bowl caliber player.
Hunt is a step down. this may be a committee but they may give ford one game to prove he deserves to start. Hunt still has to learn some things with the plays. the playbook would have changed some from the year before. the play names etc, the snap counts usually change.
I'd expect ford will at least start this week. after that, its open season. whoever is the better player (likely)

Ford went for $904 and $816 in the 2 high stakes leagues I was in last night. $1,000 budget.
Perhaps league-mates that ponied up for Nacua the week before but fell short? To those who really needed help at RB and found a way to land Ford, you done good! The only concern I have is whether the commitment to scheming their run game remains as is or do they now shift the focus onto Watson more?

Watson looks..not so good so far. The club is built to run the ball. I think they continue to do just that. Maybe now it’s a tad more rbbc but Ford is the feature guy, as per the coach this week.

Jerome Ford rushed 10 times for 18 yards and a touchdown in the Browns’ Week 3 win over the Titans, adding two receptions for 33 yards and a second score.

Things got off to an extremely curious start where five different Browns received carries before Ford, but he ended up handling 12-of-25 backfield touches. Neither Kareem Hunt nor Pierre Strong handled more than seven touches. That is probably still too close for comfort for fantasy managers who emptied the FAAB clip this week, but Ford was the clear lead back. PFF charted him as dominating snaps. It was always going to be difficult to sustain ground production against the Titans’ strong run defense. Ford continues to profile as an upside RB2 for Week 4 against the Ravens.

- Rotoworld
PFF had Ford playing 40/71 snaps, Hunt 18/71 and Strong 8/71 (56%/25%/11%). Ford benefitted from touchdown deodorant bigtime.

Yes, we got really lucky with the TDs. And I didn't think Hunt would get that much play this first week. It sucks that Ford couldn't separate himself when he had the chance. This seems like big time RBBC. We just need to guess who will get the TDs from week to week.

I dealt him after I grabbed him off waivers last week in a league where I'm deep at RB and have Taylor coming back. Solid points but not a good stat line. Looks to be a wide open competition...

I thought he looked good and I don’t think people here seem to understand how difficult the Titans are to run against.

I benched Ford in about half the places I own him this week because of the matchup and that won’t be a regular occurrence going forward. I don't see any competition and see him a locked in RB2 with upside.

This. Titans aren't a slouch, sure they got out played yesterday but on the grand scheme they are a tough defensive unit. Again, 2 total TDs against them I'm fine with all day.

Yep. I'll admit I'm being optimistic because he's on my team, but it's clear they trust him in the passing game which is a big addition. I assume Hunt will get some of the Strong and Moore carries once he is fully up to speed. It feels like they are headed to a 65/35 split but Ford just looks good so far. He's got quickness and bounce.

I just dealt him for Lockett in a league where I had Mike Williams as WR3 and not a great deal behind him. That I had Achane on my bench made the decision a bit easier, if Ford maintains RB2+ numbers so be it

I hope you guys are right. I would love to trade this guy but he doesn’t have much value after this performance. Hopefully he does have a good game to up his value.

2 td not a good performance lmao what? You can say his yards were weak but to say not a good performance after punching in 2 isn’t accurate. Points are points.

Why? He was 66-33 with Hunt specifically but Ford had 56% of the RB snaps, 48% of the RB carries and 48% of the RB total opportunities.

Not sure how we get to 65-35 from that. We should be hoping Ford holds onto a 50% share of RB opportunities.

I do not believe you are properly looking at this from the angle that the Browns won so handily they started getting some of their backups work at the end of the game.

I appreciate the optimism. Maybe. I hope.

I was speaking purely from a trade value perspective. I am happy with what he got me yesterday. But as far as going forward value, there were a lot of red flags out of that performance.

Your league doesn't value touchdowns? Again besides actual yards gained what red flags? Dude scored 2 TDs against a stout D.

I didnt watch the game but just watched his touches, he has some juice and was consistently making people miss and stiff-arming guys.
Passed the eye test for me.

The matchup scared me so I benched him for Nico in my flex, will most likely be starting him every week moving forward

He looked a lot better than the stat line would have you believe.

Agreed. He got hit in the backfield a ton and seems to have speed to catch the edge a good stiff arm and some juke to his game.

Not correct
I would have appreciated your understanding of the rule. I'm citing an article I found, but it's not the 1st that I've read:

"The Veteran Salary Benefit (VSB) rule was created by the 2020 CBA and replaced the old Minimum Salary Benefit (MSB) Rule. These rules were put in place to allow veteran players to be signed to Cap-friendly deals instead of being replaced by cheaper, more Cap-friendly, younger players. The Veteran Salary Benefit allows veteran player to be signed to 1-year contracts with the applicable minimum salary (based on the player’s service time) and a small signing bonus ($152,500 in 2022), but only have to count that player at the salary level of a player with only 2 years of service time (plus the bonus)."

That isn't the type of contract Hunt signed. And very clearly wasn't a contract he would have considered this offseason as an alternative to Ford in the #2 role.
Hunt is done.

From Jake Ciely
  • Jerome Ford was the first running back since Saquon Barkley in Week 1 of 2022 to score 17+ points against the Titans… and just the second since Jonathan Taylor in Week 8 of 2021

Ford has played well enough that I am considering starting him over Gibbs as a flex option in a PPR league this week.

With David coming back most likely, I think I would make that move.....Gibbs has been a bit underwhelming.

Ford is currently on my bench in my 0.5 ppr....but really debating on starting him, hard to pull the trigger with J Cook, Kyren, Moss, and Achane...... as well as dmont..... arghhh. Went into the season thinking my RBS werre terrible.... how quickly things change after a few weeks.

Same. Actually playing Mattison over him at the moment.

With AKERS most likely being active this week, I'd prob go Ford over Mattison

Carolina is just so brutally bad. Both as a team and against the run. I see that being the Vikings in a walk, with Mattison and potentially Akers playing well. They are giving up 29 fppg through 3 weeks.

it's hard to evaluate a guy like Ford after watching Chubb for so long, but i'll try.

he seems to be a serviceable running back. he's got some elusiveness, likes to try to bounce runs outside.

doesn't seem to have much power up the middle.

i think he can put up some points for your team in a redraft.

i haven't seen much to get excited about in dynasty formats, other than the receiving ability.

my 2 cents, ymmv. not trying to start any arguments, just giving my perspective having seen a fair amount of his playing time with the Browns.

oh also on the subject of Hunt.

i don't think they would've brought him back if they thought he was completely washed.

nor do i believe he's the player he used to be, he is in decline. he is not suddenly going to become a bellcow back at this point.

he does seem to be running harder than he did last year. he looked like he sort of gave up last season.

there will certainly be a timeshare, how much work any of them get is anyone's guess.

Hunt looks to be DNP today.

Starting Ford over Gibbs
i recall hearing he got a few nicks in the Titans game, but from what i have heard so far it doesn't seem to be anything major.

doesn't surprise me they held him out. wouldn't be surprised to see him play Sunday.

they cut hunt, or let him walk, and didn't re-sign him until Chubb got hurt and they didn't draft a RB either. shows you how much they love Ford.

Ford is getting the bulk of the carries, with Hunt already banged up I don't foresee this being a competition. Hunt may sprinkle in for change of pace (he may take all year to get back into full game playing shape or they may throw him to the wolves resulting in an injury). This is Ford's backfield.

it’s been mentioned many times, but that was largely a money decision.

they clearly like Ford.

my belief is that Ford has an incomplete skill set and Hunt is there to help fill in the gaps.

there is likely no bell cow to be had here.

Just curious, what is the skill he is missing to be complete?

He could have a little more toughness to his game. Seems to rely on speed versus running people over.

Will work against linebackers slower than him, but some defensive players can only be beaten with "toughness". Whether that be a stiffarm or running through contact.

Deshaun is out today according Schefter. This means the Cleveland running backs will likely get a lot more usage than they would if Deshaun was playing. Unfortunately, I think it also means they'll be a lot more eight and nine man fronts that they have to deal with. I honestly don't know if this is a benefit or a negative for Ford. Anyone know how DTR does in the dump off passing game?

Stacked boxes equals easier to break the big one for Ford so not all is bad.
