Steven Jackson to lose touches (1 Viewer)

On April 28, 2007, Leonard was selected by the St. Louis Rams in the second round with the 52nd overall pick of the 2007 NFL Draft. Coach Scott Linehan has decided to use Leonard as a fullback, running back, and a special third-down back, which will give Steven Jackson a break. Linehan has also stated that Leonard will receive 15-20 touches per game. So far in rookie training camps, Leonard has been only one of two running backs, the other being Brad Lau. “We only have two backs right now so I am running in single back and halfback so I will be the running back unless we get another running back in here,” Leonard said. “It’s nice to get the reps, but it is tiring.” Brian Leonard ran for the Rams first touchdown of the year against the Minnesota Vikings in preseason on August 10, 2007.[4]

Gone on record...what in the world does that mean. Jackson touching the ball as many times as possible gives them the best chance to win. I'm sure at some point he has "gone on record" saying they will do what it takes to win. Leonard will be used just like the 2nd RB was last year...not often.

Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams rookie RB Brian Leonard is expected to be the team's top backup behind RB Steven Jackson. He is expected to be a core player on special teams, spell Jackson and be involved in third-down packages. He may also do some blocking at fullback.

Less catches for Jackson

I'm sure the Rams will use Leonard but he's not going to get 240+ touches. He'll maybe see 50-75 barring injury to S.Jax

Well I think the important thing to note here is that there is NO WAY that Sjax is catching the same # of passes that he brought in last year... but I don't even think that really is due to the presence of Leonard, moreso regression to the mean.

good post . . .240 touches for a backup RB is laughable . . .that being said, I did like what I saw with Leonard . . . Sjax's 2007 production won't be as high as his production in 2006 . . .

I love these boards! Everyone is a freaking genius and does not want to look at what could be right in front of their face. Leonard will make his presence known this year. Now is it 250 carries known? That remains to be seen. But why is everyone so ready to dismiss the possibility that this could turn into a RBBC? Every other team seems to be going this way, why not the Rams? I can't wait to see how this plays out...

Can we please stop with this myth. RBBC is not more prevelent now than it has been. STOP IT

I don't believe there'll be anywhere near a true RBBC. What I will say is I think Linehan realizes they need a solid backup who can take some of the load off Jackson. How many touches will Leonard get? I'm sure it'll depend on the dynamics of each game. My guess is he'll normally see at least 4 or 5 touches & sometimes as many as 10-12.

Is that enough to drop Jackson to 3 or 4? To me, no. I took him at 2 in a redraft league that just got underway. BTW, I like Leonard in dynasty leagues. Some people are calling him overrated, but this kid really has some running/receiving skills, IMO. I could easily see him becoming a starter for somebody after his rookie contract is up.

Scott Linehan has made it clear that he's installing a Leonard-ratio in the offense this year, designed to get the former Rutgers back 15-20 touches a game. Seems like a good enough idea -- Leonard is a versatile and talented runner and receiver that could cause mismatches for the Rams offense -- but what about Steven Jackson, maybe the most complete back in the league not named LaDainian Tomlinson?

 is this like the "Randy Ratio" of a few years ago that lasted about zero games?

No, no. Teams WANT to be RBBC. The Rams HATE having a stud like Jackson that they have to give all those touches to.

I can see him (Leonard) getting 10-15 maybe. That would give him 160- 240 touches over the course of a year. St Louis last year got the ball to all their running back's 620 times, Any back (according to NFL.com) not named S. Jackson touched the ball a total of 184 times last year or 11.5 times a game.

So you think about 16 teams have a RBBC? Which ones do you see that are like that? You probably should define RBBC too so we know what you mean by your statement. Unless your definition is different than what most think I'd say you'll be hard pressed to provide us with 16 teams.

Just tell me, at what point did Leonard prove anything, he will not damage the value of Jackson at all......

Let me guess Coach said...........

"Hey lets give this rookie some of our pro-bowl runners touches, it would be great to piss off an elite back"

MMMMMMMMMM.........Okay.

Don't over coach it!!!!!

or maybe coach said "Hey let's give this rookie some of our pro-bowl runner's touches to keep him fresh and healthy, and oh yea, maybe help us win a few more games as well".Fantasy wise I think we all agree that we hate the RBBC, but from a pure football standpoint, it certainly has its merits.

You're right, Linehan has to tell the truth word for word.....and Shanahan never lies either  ......

Leonard may get 5-10 touches a game to get S Jax a breather but that's it. If he ends up with 100-175 touches total for the year, he should be an asset to the Rams, but not your fantasy team. This is not going to be a RBBC.

If we are going to look at preseason games like they are regular season ones, when is the Kellen Clemens will be starting Week 1 for the Jets thread starting since he threw for 3 TD's the other night?

I can't wait to see this rookie try to hurdle an NFL DB or SS and then get a helmet in the balls. Impressive though but he'll learn the hard way.

I can see the the Rams lessening Jackson's touches a tad - to reduce his wear and tear and increase his longevity. However, he is too effective of a ball carrier, the Rams have to give him the ball for their offense to work. No way the #2 back gets 15 touches a game. Looks like the coach is doing a bad job of feeding his devision rivals disinformation.

As a season ticket hold (PSL) to Rams since they moved here; POINT - We are talking about Steven Jackson; this guy wants to set a new record, 2500 total yards, and management is in accord. MFaulk RB was a team player (but still jerk as a person..... do not let that little boy smile on NFL network fool you, but a team player........ Marshal picking up a blitzing line backer... outstanding.) Leonard can be used asRB, FB, TE, Flanker......... BUT, Jackson wants and will receive touches. He did not get along with MFaulk and wants that record of Total yards. He may not have as many receiving, since the Rams have new TE and BIG 3rd receiver. Anyway, GO RAMS

They're going to ride Jackson like a Hummer. Nothing to see here.
riding Jackson like a Hummer with 3.00 a gallon gas, short trips (goal line) could end up going to the VW(Leonard). At the least if you draft Jackson, Leonard should be drafted to back him up IMO.

guys, scott linehan has already gone on record saying this. I really don't think he'd lie.
You must be new to fantasy football. First off, good to have you aboard! Please look up the term "coachspeak". In short, it is a phenomenon in which coaches or other people in lofty positions on a team say something in training camp or the preseason, and more often than not it ends up not only being untrue, but nearly the complete opposite of what actually occurs.FWIW, wasn't Linehan with the Vikes when they guaranteed Onterrio Smith would rush for 100 yards in that week's game and then gave him less than 5 carries?Welcome to our great hobby, you're going to love it!

This happens every year. 1st preseason game and the rookie does well, all the sudden he is going to take away from the starter? If Jackson would have played last night to the extent of Leonard he would have put up 100+ yds and you would all be saying he is going to break the single season record.

So now I'm gonna go out and move Jackson down in my rankings to b/c some dumb (thats right, I said dumb) coach shoots his mouth off to the media. It was Lanny that didn't give |SJAX the ball that much the 1st half of the season last year and look what happened. 2nd half offensive coordinator starts calling the plays and what happens? Jackson gets the touches he needs to become effective in the offense, the Rams win and |SJAX puts up MONSTER numbers!

Leonard looks like he has talent but no more then any other backup in the NFL. He has played 1 game against a weak Minn D and did O.K. He may cut into SJAX carries a bit, but to think St. Louis will move to a RBBC because of 2 weeks of training camp and 1 preseason game against Minn is crazy talk!

Really he didn't start doing even "OK" until Minnesota's first team D went out (although there was an extremely small sample size of plays against the first team D it read 4 touches for 9 yards).

to put RBCC in thsi threads title is BS. NO way is or will this be true. I doubt Leonard will even play any series a game unless SJack is hurting. Soem third downs..some plays yes..some plays both on the field sure..but RBCC..no way..not even close this year. SJack's goal is 2500 total yards and he cant get that in a committee approach..please change the tittle and take RBBC off it.

Didn't read the entire thread so I don't know if this is a honda. but what was the context of the quote? This sounds like he was talking about the preseason games. No way he was talking about the regular season....
