Stuff happening lately that reminds you you're getting older (2 Viewers)

my god this sounds terrible.
Yea. Due to meds, his condition, the surgery (PEG install), he was really, really out of it for awhile. Talking to people that had been gone 20 years or more, feeling that he was falling while laying in bed, thinking he was being held hostage by someone while in the hospital. It was tough seeing a man in his late 80s like this. But now, like I said, though he gets fed through the stomach tube, he's doing well. Feeling better, much more mentally acute, going to activities like nature bus rides, hearing musicians, etc. Back to what he was like before it all started. He does miss eating very much though. This is a man that loved his food.

Having your daughter drive is shocking, scary, and kinda liberating. Wait till she goes away to college though.
Yeah.  It'll be interesting when that time comes.  Starting this summer I'm guessing we'll be looking at colleges.  I'm kind of hoping she picks someplace close.

Here's a good sign you're getting older.  Telling parents with young kids to enjoy the time because it goes by fast.  They   at you just like you did when older people told you the same thing.

My daughter being a junior in college doesn't even seem real some days.

Only now can I imagine how my parents felt when I chose a school 10 hours away from home.

Just wait until they're 30, getting divorced, and move back in with two kids.

My daughter goes to school 1000 miles away and may not come back this summer.     She misses school when she's home more than she misses home when she's at school.  There are worse problems I guess.

I understand this sentiment very well. For instance ... don't the years 2004 and 2019 seem WAY closer together than, say, 1968 and 1983? Or even 1984-1999?
The powers that be found a way to slow down time.

I was going to say, wait until she gets married and move out, but you have already been there and back  :hifive:

Haven't read the whole thread. Something that occurred to me the other night watching Eli make possibly his last start, is that all of these retiring QB's are younger than me by 10-15 years. I remember watching all the great, HOF players during their final games. Thinking, "yeah, that guy looks old, he needs to retire". Now, I'm that guy that looks old.

I've become that guy who now defends them.  When my nephew says something like, "He's 33, he should just retire already."  I'm like, "33's not that old.  I mean, he's probably got a good 15 more years left in the tank."  :oldunsure:

Growing up, I regarded football players in their mid-to-late-30s as just about old men. I mean, look at this pic of Ken Stabler on the Saints circa 1982-84. He was either 37 or 38 in that shot (not sure what year that was taken).

There's a trendy new coffee place a block from my office that is hugely popular.  I've vowed to never step foot in the place again if I can help it.  They have 8 different coffee products on tap, a huge menu of different teas and other concoctions.  Its typically at least a 10 minute wait even with only a couple people in line ahead of me, as the servers create all these elaborate $8 drinks.  I feel like such a boomer, scowling as I take my $4 12 oz black coffee to go.

Maybe the main reason I still root for guys like Brees and Brady.

I can't eat even a normal restaurant meal (no appetizer or dessert) without waking up a night to take a combo of Tums, Pepto and/or Alka Seltzer.

I absolutely stink at video games. My awareness and reaction times are way to slow.

Someone recently said there was a game called circle punch or something where a kid can punch another in the arm if they look below their waist.  And it's been around "for decades" but apparently it started after I finished school.

My issue and question:

I am 49, just over 6’ tall and weigh about 210lbs. I played some pickup basketball for the first time in ten years about three weeks ago. I realized I have no stamina in running, I’m hunched over in a few minutes trying to get my breath.         My big problem was my knees afterwards. Hurting like crazy! I got ice packs wrapped around my knees that night when I got home and I realized I looked like that picture of Bill Walton when he played for the Celtics late in his career.

I would like to keep playing to try and stay in shape but my knees are still hurting (getting better) three weeks later. Has anyone used the compression braces for running or exercise? Will they help with swelling and soreness?

Are you me?  48 soon to be 49 and played hoops for the first time last night in about 4-5 years.  My knees themselves are fine but my left quad, right about my knee is completely swollen and sore.  I woke up at 3:00 with that sucker throbbing (my quad) and wrapped it in ice while I tried to sleep on the couch.  According to the google it's quad tendonitis.  Apparently I over did it or didn't stretch enough.

It sucks because I hate most forms of cardio and had fun last night.  May give it another go in a couple of weeks but definitely looking to get a compression brace or 4 first.

Another difference I'm 6'1 and 3/4 and about 210.  Sounds ok except right out of high school I was a legit 6'3".  Apparently your spine compresses as you age...great.

At our age ... stuff that "came out recently" can still have "been around for decades".

Take grunge and the offshoots. To me, acts like Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Candlebox, Dishwalla, etc. still feel like "right now" contemporary acts -- not bands that have been around for decades. But they have :(

These days, new big acts seem to come fully formed with no backstory, slow build-up, etc. Someone named Lizzo played a big show here in New Orleans back in September/October. My 16-year-old daughter and her friend were in the car when I saw a billboard for the show. That was the first time I ever saw the name "Lizzo". Mentally, I expect someone playing arena shows to be on my pop-cultural radar ... but in this case, I was surprised. I asked outloud who Lizzo was. The girls acted like I asked who Madonna or Prince were :(

I mean seriously. Are Bruno Mars, Macklemore, and Katy Perry now legacy acts? Where are Lorde and Meghan Trainor? Why aren't the big names in rap/hip-hop transcendent celebrities (e.g. known by grandmas) the way Run DMC, Bobby Brown, and MC Hammer were? Why don't today's pop stars have longevity?

Good one.  My genre as well.  While I don't think Pearl Jam is a "right now" act even though they still (periodically) make music, what I do understand now is why my parents always had Elvis playing in the house long after he was dead.

Looking for a new job and coming to the realization that every supervisor I ever had at my first employer out of school is now retired.

Time stops for none of us, brother.  I've heard of Trainor but not Lorde, or Macklemore.  Social media influence drives everything these days, not talent.  If the girls love them, they'll sell millions... until the girls find someone else.  #sunsethearthands! "TAKE THE PICTURE!"

That might explain why no one stays big in music anymore.

Besides the fact that I am getting old, to me, this is related a lot to the pace of technological change. 68 and 83 seem worlds apart to me, Vietnam hippies vs yuppies, Reagan, new wave music, all kinds of very distinct cultural and technological differences IMO.

2004-2019? What's the difference? Social media (looking back I didn't join Facebook until 2007, but was on myspace a few years before that) and much more sophisticated cellphones? eSports/Twitch? Maybe I need a teenager to tell me the big differences.

My latest "injury" caused by nothing: sharp pain in my left elbow when I do crazy things like raise up my arm, or try to pick up something really heavy, like my coffee.

No idea what it's from. I sleep kind of weird sometimes and it may be from sleeping on top of the arm with it bent fully at the elbow. Been trying to avoid doing that lately, but can't help it.

Can't see any point in going to the doctor. What are they going to say besides I'm old (47)?

It's like I'm 80,000 miles overdue for an oil change.

Have your wife get you a Peleton for Christmas.

And you.

Go to the doctor.

(It sounds a bit like tennis elbow.  It's fixable.)

definitely tendonitis "tennis elbow" - everything you read says it will go away after awhile ...but also likely to reappear at various times.

the best thing I found was one of these "twisty bars" and it helped tremendously.

The compression stuff will help with swelling, but probably won't impact the pain. You need to regain leg strength, flexibility and stamina, which will take a commitment to consistent exercise and stretching. Unless you're a body builder, you also should probably lose ~30-40 pounds.

All that being said, explosive direction-changing sports like basketball aren't great for old dudes, especially deconditioned overweight ones. I've multiple friends blow out their Achilles tendons or knee ligaments playing pick-up basketball in middle age.

Depending on what part of the elbow hurts, you can look up exercises to treat tennis or golfer's elbow - though both of these would be unusual unless you're left handed and partake in repetitive stressful activity with the left arm. You also could have a compression neuropathy of the ulnar nerve (the one that runs over the funny bone) or cervical disc disease damaging the nerves as they exit the spine.

Your doctor can help distinguish these things and point you in the right direction to rehabilitate the injury.

Wow pretty harsh there.

Got a little pebble -like thing under the skin on the ball of my foot. Almost feels like a BB. Thought it might go away on its own, but no dice. Limping around like an old man is the suck.
