At our age ... stuff that "came out recently" can still have "been around for decades".
Take grunge and the offshoots. To me, acts like Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Candlebox, Dishwalla, etc. still feel like "right now" contemporary acts -- not bands that have been around for decades. But they have :(
These days, new big acts seem to come fully formed with no backstory, slow build-up, etc. Someone named Lizzo played a big show here in New Orleans back in September/October. My 16-year-old daughter and her friend were in the car when I saw a billboard for the show. That was the first time I ever saw the name "Lizzo". Mentally, I expect someone playing arena shows to be on my pop-cultural radar ... but in this case, I was surprised. I asked outloud who Lizzo was. The girls acted like I asked who Madonna or Prince were :(
I mean seriously. Are Bruno Mars, Macklemore, and Katy Perry now legacy acts? Where are Lorde and Meghan Trainor? Why aren't the big names in rap/hip-hop transcendent celebrities (e.g. known by grandmas) the way Run DMC, Bobby Brown, and MC Hammer were? Why don't today's pop stars have longevity?
