The 101 Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Movies of All Time: 1. Interstellar (1 Viewer)

15. Big Fish

2003 - 2h 5 - PG-13
Director: Tim Burton
Metascore: 58

A frustrated son tries to determine the fact from fiction in his dying father's life.

I lost my father at a young age, so father/child movies like this always impact me a bit more than others. That said, I think this is Burton's best film. Just a perfectly written and executed story.

Trivia: Steven Spielberg was attached to this project and wanted Jack Nicholson to star, but dropped out due to his full schedule, soon after which Tim Burton signed on to direct.
Love this movie. When the caravan shows up to the church at the end, it still slays me every time.

16. The Martian

2015 - 2h 24 - PG-13
Director: Ridley Scott
Metascore: 80

An astronaut becomes stranded on Mars after his team assume him dead, and must rely on his ingenuity to find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive and can survive until a potential rescue.

A movie for lovers of hard, realistic scifi. The science is sound, it’s a unique setting and situation and the acting of the entire cast was on point. It's funny, realistic, and will keep you on the edge of your seat, even through the botany scenes.

Trivia: The mission to Mars in the film emulates actual missions that NASA is planning for the future.
In my top 5, but the book ending was way more realistic.

I like these last three, but would never consider them for any top 20 list, let alone this list.

As such, I love that they're here.

As I've said, in looking at other lists on the net, no two lists seem to be very close to each other, and I expect everyone's top 20 to be pretty different.

IMO this is one of those good but not great scifi films. The climax is exciting but it takes a long time to get there. Some of the song choices, like Waterloo, don't really work either.
I'm glad I saw it but have little interest to see it again. Some top-tier movies are so emotionally draining that I don't want to revisit them (e.g.; Million Dollar Baby) but this is not that.

BTW, I still remember when this won the Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy

Damon is pretty hilarious in it.

"**** you Mars!"

14. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

1982 - - 1h 55 - PG
Director: Steven Spielberg
Metascore: 92

A troubled child summons the courage to help a friendly alien escape from Earth and return to his home planet.

A childhood classic for me that will always holds up. This is damn near a perfect film IMO.

Trivia: Steven Spielberg shot most of the film from the eye-level of a child to further connect with Elliott and E.T.

17. V for Vendetta

2005 - 2h 12 - R
Director: James McTeigue
Metascore: 62

In a future British dystopian society, a shadowy freedom fighter, known only by the alias of "V", plots to overthrow the tyrannical government - with the help of a young woman.

I rewatch more than anyone probably should and I bet I'll get some heat for ranking this so high, but I absolutely love this movie. I've never been a very political person but this movie got close to lighting that fire under my butt. Hugo Weaving is amazing especially when you consider he was in a mask the whole time. All in all , a great adaptation of a great graphic novel.

Trivia: The domino scene, where V tips over black and red dominoes to form a giant letter V, involved 22,000 dominoes. It took four professional domino assemblers 200 hours to set it up.

Totally lost me here with these......dude.

But hey this is your countdown. I get it.

Way too high for all these.....like way too high for my taste. Not bad movies......but Top 20? Naaaaaaa.

I love this movie....always have. Was a 12 year old kid the first time we experienced the magic of this fantastic movie. And to this day I still cry like an overgrown baby.

Wrong thread. E.T. scared the hell out of 6yo me, so it's a horror movie. ;)

Great pick. This is one that I was staring at when I tried to write some done and a big reason I knew it would take me a year if I tried to do a list like this. I saw a few that have shown up on your list like this one, Wall-E, Pan's Labyrinth and the main that hasn't show up (yet??). So many fun doors started opening up for movies that would qualify like these.

Odd bit of trivia is that actor and writer Spalding Gray took his kids to see Big Fish the night before he committed suicide by jumping off the Staten Island Ferry. His widow later said she thought the movie "gave him permission to die," presumably relating to the theme of a father passing his life story to his son.

13. The NeverEnding Story

1984 - - 1h 42 - PG
Director: Wolfgang Petersen
Metascore: 49

A troubled boy dives into a wondrous fantasy world through the pages of a mysterious book.

Between seeing this in a theater 3 times when it came out, and hearing the song on the radio all the time, this movie is a giant pool of nostalgia I refuse to get out of. Oh, and one of the best 80s synth soundtracks ever.

Trivia: At the time of its release it was the most expensive film produced outside the United States and the Soviet Union.

40. Independence Day

1996 - 2h 25 - PG-13
Director: Roland Emmerich
Metascore: 59

The aliens are coming and their goal is to invade and destroy Earth. Fighting superior technology, mankind's best weapon is the will to survive.

One of the best popcorn movies of all time and it just happens to be a good scifi movie as well.

Trivia: Dean Devlin said that most of the dialogue in the scenes Jeff Goldblum shared with Judd Hirsch and Will Smith was improvised.
I think this one holds up much better than Armageddon. I still remember seeing it in the theater and having a blast. Yes, it's stupid and ridiculous but in a good, fun way.
Randy Quaid slightly less loony here than is in real life

Lol. Another I remember creeping me out. WTF is up with 80s movies for kids?

I tried watching Part 3 with Jack Black. Not a recommended experience.

Judging by reactions so far, there are at least 3, probably 4 movies in my top 10 that will be deemed to be ranked way too high.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Edit to add Never Ending Story
E.T I can understand though

12. Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope

1977 - 2h 1 - PG
Director: George Lucas
Metascore: 90

Luke Skywalker joins forces with a Jedi Knight, a cocky pilot, a Wookiee and two droids to save the galaxy from the Empire's world-destroying battle station, while also attempting to rescue Princess Leia from the mysterious Darth Vader.

The movie that started it all. Don’t think I need words to justify this.

Trivia: George Lucas was so sure this movie would flop that instead of attending the premiere, he went on vacation to Hawaii with his good friend Steven Spielberg. It was on that vacation that they came up with the idea for Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981).

Not sure how much nostalgia feeds into the need for this to be ranked so high.
If you watch it as a stand alone movie it can be pretty clunky. But it brings back great memories.
I think Empire and Rogue One are better films in all ways, but ranking this one high will never get an argument

Depends on if we're taking about the '77 or '97 version.

Han didn't shoot first... He shot ONLY!

77 version, but I always thought the "Han shot first" thing was way overblown. Totally unnecessary for Lucas to change, but also blown way out of proportion.

ET is one of two movies I cried at the end. It didn't hold up as now it's just kinda ok. The other move ending... Cool Runnings :ROFLMAO:... go figure.

T2 is way too low. Might belong at #1.

I'm going to have to disagree. Retconning Solo's morality to make it more palpable also diminishes his heroic turn at the end. It's not as egregious as the rest of the Mos Eisley sequence or, for sure Jedi Rocks, but it still makes the whole thing worse.

God awful what Lucas did the OG Trilogy in 1997. Just an abortion. And the sad thing is we will never get the original cuts on 4K......ever. Heck they are not even on Blue Ray.

I have them on VHS in THX letterbox and on the DVD in letter box format. It will do those DVD's....but man what a huge whiff. He lobotomized those movies with his CGI tinkering.

I messed around with the Despecialized and 4k77 versions. While they did satisfy the nostalgia itch and confirm it's the better version, ultimately I just succumbed to the dark side and let the '97 versions into my life.

Oh I still watch the 97 versions in all their 4K glory.....but I cringe at the crap he added...especially in A New Hope....it's so damn tacky.

I have the originals somewhere on laserdisc. Just need a laserdisc player again.

11. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

2001 - 2h 58 - PG-13
Director: Peter Jackson
Metascore: 92

A meek Hobbit from the Shire and eight companions set out on a journey to destroy the powerful One Ring and save Middle-earth from the Dark Lord Sauron.

The second and final "series" entry since I rank all three films here about the same. Before these movies, fantasy was anathema to Hollywood. It was a huge gamble that paid off, helping make fantasy more mainstream, paving the way for things like Game of Thrones afterwards. I'd probably rank them TT, ROTK, FOTR best to worst although it all just feels like one long marathon of an epic.

Trivia: Sir Christopher Lee (Saruman) read "The Lord of the Rings" once a year until his death in 2015, and had done so since the year it was published. He was also the only member of the cast and crew ever to have met J.R.R. Tolkien.

23. The Terminator

1984 - 1h 47 - R
Director: James Cameron
Metascore: 84

A cyborg assassin from the future attempts to find and kill a young woman who is destined to give birth to a warrior who will lead a resistance to save humankind from extinction.

Another that many will have ranked higher, I was also too young to have seen this in theaters. Still an all timer and fantastic clodes loop time travel plot.

Trivia: James Cameron got the idea of giving Arnold Schwarzenegger even fewer lines in the film than Schwarzenegger's earlier film Conan the Barbarian (1982), in which Schwarzenegger only had 24 lines. In this film, Schwarzenegger has only 14 lines.
Oh wow, the top 20 must be amazing here.

20. Terminator 2: Judgment Day

1991 - 2h 17 - R
Director: James Cameron
Metascore: 75

A cyborg, identical to the one who failed to kill Sarah Connor, must now protect her ten year old son John from an even more advanced and powerful cyborg.

The best Terminator film and maybe one of the best action films of all time. Another tearjerker at the ned too. While the first is excellent, this one excels at being a scifi film with further development of Skynet and another Terminator model.

Trivia: Linda Hamilton's twin sister, Leslie Hamilton Gearren, was used as a double in scenes involving two "Sarah Connors" (for example, when the T-1000 was imitating her), and in a scene not in the theatrical release (but on the DVD) as a mirror image of Linda.
This movie would have been about 20% better if the previews hadn't ruined the box of roses in the mall hallway scene. Previews told us he was the good guy making jokes this time, which removes the effect - we all would have been reacting like Sarah Conner did when she saw him in the institution hallway.

For some reason I've only seen ET once, and it didn't land for me.

This is Sentimental Spielberg at his best. Many times, his sentimentality is a turn-off but it was perfectly suited for this story and through the child's perspective.

25. Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory

1971 - 1h 40 - G
Director: Mel Stuart

A poor but hopeful boy seeks one of the five coveted golden tickets that will send him on a tour of Willy Wonka's mysterious chocolate factory.

For me to put a musical in the top 25 of any countdown means I must really love this movie and that is the case here. Gene Wilder's Wonka is masterfully portrayed. This is one of the best children's movies that holds up just as well as an adult.

Trivia: After reading the script, Gene Wilder said he would take the role of Willy Wonka under one condition: that he would be allowed to limp and then suddenly somersault in the scene when he first meets the children. When director Mel Stuart asked why, Wilder replied that having Wonka do this meant that "from that time on, no one will know if I'm lying or telling the truth." Stuart asked, "If I say no, you won't do the picture?" Wilder said, "I'm afraid that's the truth."

Probably have seen this movie more than any other in my life. Top 5 with a bullet.

Wow, pleasant surprise here. Loved it. Saw it in the theater, and balled like a baby at the end. I mean like literally uncontrolled sobbing. I don't know why. I had a pretty good relationship with my Dad and he was (and still is) alive.

Tolkien.
Way too low! Maybe putting one of the three movies here, but as a trilogy...

11 is pretty high I think?
As a trilogy I may have put this as number 1. All 3 were nominated for Best Picture, and Return of the King won Best Picture. It was so masterfully done.

It's hard to think of a trilogy that was better? The Godfather 1 and 2 were great, but the 3rd one was meh.
