A meek Hobbit from the Shire and eight companions set out on a journey to destroy the powerful One Ring and save Middle-earth from the Dark Lord Sauron.
The second and final "series" entry since I rank all three films here about the same. Before these movies, fantasy was anathema to Hollywood. It was a huge gamble that paid off, helping make fantasy more mainstream, paving the way for things like Game of Thrones afterwards. I'd probably rank them TT, ROTK, FOTR best to worst although it all just feels like one long marathon of an epic.
Trivia: Sir Christopher Lee (Saruman) read "The Lord of the Rings" once a year until his death in 2015, and had done so since the year it was published. He was also the only member of the cast and crew ever to have met J.R.R. Tolkien.
No. I will let you have a redo of you want to move this MUCH, MUCH higher.
Guessing you're not a fan of the books?
This is so hard, I feel for him.
Grouping some movies and not grouping others is going to cause some inconsistency. But like you I agree this lower than I would have guessed for a niche genre list.
Let’s look at the IMDB rankings of all movies, not just a SciFi/Fantasy niche but across all genres and all movies.
TTT is #12
FOTR is #9
RTTK is #6
To repeat, these are movies that are ranked across ALL genres.
To group these and rank them only 11 against just a tiny niche of all genres just seems off. There is not a single sci-fi or fantasy movie ranked higher than even TTT on the IMDB list.
I think Scoresman has handled the franchises correctly so far. Not the rankings, but his handling of them.
The Harry Potter and LOTR franchises both have very high quality consistently across all movies. The Harry Potter ones could be argued individually, but does anyone really want to see 4 to 8 different ones on this list?
I found LOTR tediously boring in the end, but enjoyed the experienced once.
There is no way you could group all the Star Wars ones together. The differences in quality is vast from the original, Rogue One and Empire at the top end to several that were shi’ite. I maybe wouldnt have included ROTJ as a matter of principle if I were ranking them separately.
I would have also grouped the Matrix sequels if I were going to include them separately
Overall you dont want one franchise dominating a list, so while I have a fair idea of many in the top 10 there is bound to be some surprises
