Top 101 Movies of the 90s. We are done. If I knock out Amadeus/Brazil/Ran, We get to have an 80s countdown!! (1 Viewer)

If it makes you feel better, I read it and thought, "Wow, KP likes this - I should give it a shot."  Even though sometimes your taste is bad.

I did like After Life but not sure why I "liked" that one among others.  I might have just arrived in the thread and was calibrating my "like" button.
Excuse me, I am going to post the next movie now.

Technically they are both ours. The list is just a simple combo of our lists. It's just possible for a movie to only appear on 1 list but be rated so high that it surpasses movies both KP and I ranked.
Gotcha and I totally missed the joke until now

:lmao:   :bag: :walkofshame:

Man, I was gonna do my Corporation (I think it was him?) quick takes on each movie listed so far, but the first post is only updated through #51.

Lol.   Well I am glad you read more before just clicking on that gem.

Another personal favorite that has been talked about a bit at the start of the draft.  I'd have to look at home, but I think this was my #15 of the decade.

#47:  THE ICE STORM

This is the flick people were talking about that unlike American Beauty gets the look behind the curtains of suburbia a bit more correct.
too low.

your ranking is pretty good.  80s screwed the pooch here.

43. Malcolm X

Denzel and Spike both just operating at their peak. Another of many movies here  that my dad insisted I watch in HS. Unlike so many others, this did not leave a mark with me. It was only years later that it really hit me.  Boy did it hit me, what biopics are better??

Sadly, another I didn't get to.   I blame the run time and edibles.

Time for my #12 pick then...

42:  THREE COLORS:  RED

I am always talking about the Before trilogy as one of my favorites, but I probably don't talk about Three Colors enough.   I will admit that it's possible this has a bit of a bump in rankings because it closes out the trilogy so well and ties the others together, but it is my favorite of the bunch by a good bit. They are all good individually, but I usually still recommend them in order.

Sean Penn was great in this

In the league of "no one cares," here's a breakdown from a person whom y'all will consider a movie snob:

101 - MANHATTAN MURDER MYSTERY - never saw or if I did I don't remember, which isn't good

100 - THE BASKETBALL DIARIES - saw, liked, not memorable, would need a re-watch

99 -  LIVE FLESH - haven't seen and should

98 - HARD EIGHT - love

97 - THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY - haven't seen and shouldn't

96 - THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER - saw, not memorable except for Connery's awful accent

95 - SWINGERS - I remember loving it but it was long ago

94 - THE APOSTLE - one of my favorites of the 90s - top 20ish!  Probably one of my top 10 favorite acting performances ever.

93 -  POINT BREAK - how could anyone not love this movie?  classic cheesy goodness

92 - THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT - can't see it making my top 100, but it was groundbreaking for its time

91 - THE FUGITIVE - mostly just remember TLJ here, good but not top 100

90 - THE FISHER KING - a movie I know I should love, and I HATE

89 -  PRINCESS MONONOKE - groundbreaking but not my favorite of this genre, probably would have it right around here or not on my list

88 - SPEED - great fun but not great movie

87 -  IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER - woefully underrated in general, seems like people forgot about this fantastic movie, glad to see it here!

86 -  AMERICAN BEAUTY - loved this at the time but feel it wouldn't hold up well

85 -  MAN ON THE MOON - never saw, hated Andy Kaufman

84 -  LA HAINE - haven't seen, movie snob card revoked?

83 -  THE USUAL SUSPECTS - loved this and surprised to see it so low, wasn't exactly a surprise ending but still so much great acting and intrigue, i remember Benecio del Toro being the standout

82 -  CASINO - haven't seen and won't now that I know about the voiceover

81 -  APOLLO 13- great movie, seems about right here

80 -  MISERY - interesting, great acting, not something i'd need to see again

79 -  BOOMERANG - saw but don't remember

78 -  DAZED & CONFUSED - one of my top 20 for sure

77 -  AS GOOD AS IT GETS - great movie that doesn't get enough love maybe due to seeming rom-com-y?  Greg Kinnear was amazing, as was Jack

76 -  SOUTH PARK:  BIGGER, LONGER, UNCUT - very funny, if you're trying to get comedies on here you could do worse

75 -  THE ENGLISH PATIENT  - ridiculous amount of backlash against this one, stunning imagery and acting, the sort of movie that can stay with you

74 -  DUMB & DUMBER - haven't seen

73 -  THE SIXTH SENSE - unfortunately I got the "surprise" pretty early, which made it suffer I suppose.  Much prefer Unbreakable and think that one is brilliant

72 -  THE AGE OF INNOCENCE - loved at the time, particularly John Malkovich, but hasn't stayed with me.  Might need a rewatch

71 -  WHAT ABOUT BOB?  HATE WITH THE FURY OF A THOUSAND SUNS

70 -  CANDYMAN - haven't seen

69 -  JFK - sorta silly IMO

68 -  THE CRYING GAME - loved in the theater.  Fantastic performances.  Haven't seen since originally in theater so no idea what I'd think now.

67 - EYES WIDE SHUT - Yeah, couldn't really do this one

66 - DEEP COVER - Haven't seen and actually have no idea what this is

65 - AUDITION - Loved it.  Deserves to be here.

64 - GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS - I get the criticism of its seeming like a play, and I did see the play and enjoyed it more, but still a top choice for me.  That acting is swoon-worthy.

63 -  A FEW GOOD MEN - Yeah, no.  Speaking of translations from stage to screen, this one didn't work for me at all.

62 -  THE VIRGIN SUICIDES - Great movie I'd kind of forgotten about.

61 -  CLUELESS - Damn fine choice.  It's not a movie I ever saw the need to see a second time, but it is important to the timeframe and awfully funny.

60 -  DANCES WITH WOLVES- Haven't seen.

59 -  TASTE OF CHERRY - Classic.  Hard for me to rank given the competition, but deserves to be around this spot, I think.

58 -  BEFORE SUNRISE - Love the whole series, but probably wouldn't have it here.

57 -  THE IRON GIANT - Without looking at list of the 90s movies, would expect this one to be in my top 10.

56 -  HAPPY TOGETHER - Fantastic but would probably be hanging on the edge of my top 100.

55 -  PHILADELPHIA - This movie was fine.  Just fine, and nothing more.  But I've always despised it because Tom Hanks won an Oscar for "looking sick" while Anthony Hopkins in Remains of the Day and DDL in In the Name of the Father went home empty-handed.  ####### travesty.

54 - BEAU TRAVAIL - I have no idea why I thought I hadn't seen this.  I have and it's great.

53 - DARK CITY - Haven't seen.

52 - THE INSIDER- Fine, but a whole lotta meh for me.

51 - AFTER LIFE - Great premise and thought it was well executed.

50 - FIGHT CLUB - I like this one a lot, and it is iconic.

49 - MAGNOLIA - At the time I saw it, I thought was one of the best I'd ever seen.  Not sure how a rewatch would hold up now, but assume I'd still think highly of it.

48 - OUT OF SIGHT - Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic.  I wish JLo and Clooney had stayed like this.

47 -  THE ICE STORM - My movie-snob card is now twice-revoked, because I hated this one.

46 - SLING BLADE - One of the tops of the decade for me for sure.  Nothing like this before or after, and the acting was superb.

45 - BOYS DON'T CRY - Thought it was great and important at the time, but I've kinda forgotten it over the years.

44 - THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY- Approximately zero laughs from me.

i'm guessing there is one on the list coming up that I believe is a better movie, that you may not have considered as a biopic, starring Mel Gibson. or maybe not on the list at all, though would find that hard to believe.
I did not know it was based on a true story but funny you should mention that

41- Bird on a Wire

Mel Gibson gives a career defining performance as Richard 'Rick" Jarmin. Did he really die on that plane? Hippie Marriane "Muff" Graves doesn't think so.

I watched this recently for the first time and had mixed feelings about it.

The very beginning was odd, almost like a music video.

Then it spent an endless amount of time on his life of crime/jail.

However the last half was excellent and very compelling.

I went away thinking it was good but not nearly as good as it could have been.

That is fair and I  your criticisms make sense. It just feels like a really important movie and I put weight on that. It's something people should see. It is not perfect. Malcolm X wasn't, Spike isn't. Nobody is but it feels important to watch and really take in.

Last one from me for the night...

41- Braveheart

I saw it at the theater when I was 12 or 13. We had to sneak into it because it was rated R. That ruled.

Muchas gracias for the earlier recommendation of the The Rewatchables podcast.  I needed a new listen for the couple hours a day I'm walking the dogs and the first four I've streamed fit the bill perfectly (a couple of which I hope show up here).  I'm as tired of Bill Simmons as the next middle-aged guy, but so far he's kept it low key and co-hosts/guests have been great.  Even better, there's enough to get me through the summer.

I remember really liking The Insider at the time I saw it.  Great performances

also even knowing about the twist The Usual Suspects is way at the top of my list.  So many great characters and one liners

La Heine sounds good had never heard of it

A nice list comeback with one of my all time favorites.

Only a couple comments since we've all seen it.

It was the first film I saw Brendan Gleeson in....and I love that guy in just about everything.

James Horner's magnificent score doesn't get the appreciation it deserves.

I swear I would have fought to the death for Scotland in that theater in Dearborn Michigan.

I knew there’d be some movies that I was too young for during first half of 90s that by the time was old enough to watch their relevance had waned, but I’m surprised/disappointed in how many movies on this list I’ve just never heard of

Calling it now, however, there are only 2 choices for the #1 spot and I’ll be highly disappointed if they’re not both top 2 choices
