Top 101 Movies of the 90s. We are done. If I knock out Amadeus/Brazil/Ran, We get to have an 80s countdown!! (1 Viewer)

Do y'all remember a few years ago, when we picked a random year and everyone sent in their list of favorite movies?  I think KP did it like the annual album polls.  And somebody got upset when the jungle opera house movie beat Wrath of Khan.  Does anybody recall why we stopped doing it?

Was that one at Telegraph and Michigan Avenue still there?
Yeah, Showcase Dearborn. I saw a lot of movies there but a nicer theater at Fairlane Mall was built and took the Showcase out of business. The Showcase  always had some problems there, it had a huge arcade full of kids and teens who often weren't even there to see a movie. Braveheart was probably one of the first movies I saw at the newer and nicer Fairlane Theater.

Fitzcarraldo is a great movie. (and yes I realize how funny that sounds)

I loved those.  I might even still have my file on them.

i rarely saw a movie there (usually Southland or Allen Park then Star Taylor or Lincoln Park.  Now pretty much MJR Southgate.  )

anyway I could practically throw a football to the old theater from my house

I could hit the Silver Cricket with a football from my backyard, We grew up awful close.

I knew there’d be some movies that I was too young for during first half of 90s that by the time was old enough to watch their relevance had waned, but I’m surprised/disappointed in how many movies on this list I’ve just never heard of

Calling it now, however, there are only 2 choices for the #1 spot and I’ll be highly disappointed if they’re not both top 2 choices
I keep telling people to consider the context and weird format of this countdown.  I THINK people will be pleasantly surprised at the top 30, but the order of the movies is interesting for various reasons.   We will cross that bridge when we get there though.

I blame the weed.

Honestly, I think like other things we went hot and heavy at first and interest started to fizzle after we did 4-5.

I gotcha the big screen TV, deluxe karaoke machine, and THX quality sound that would make George Lucas cream in his pants.

40:  THE CABLE GUY

100% my sense of humor and another of those random movies that my friend group watched and quoted a ton.   This was #11 on my list and the comedy that I had the highest.    I don't tire of watching this one.

I  did not like The Cable Guy which is weird because I loved everything Jim Carey  had previously  done.

And you just totally redeemed yourself unless this is a fake pick then you're just a big jerk head

Interesting.  I…hated this move on the single watch in theater when it was released.  Hate on the level of yet to be made Little Nicky.  This movie turned me sour on Jim Carrey in the same way that Adam Sandler had become the same caricature in every movie.  Maybe I’ll give it another chance, maybe

Jim Carrey will, however, get totally redeemed in a movie 2 years after Cable Guy

Also I worked at a blockbuster late 90s…I always maxed out my 5 weekly rentals and probably went to the theater once a week.  I saw a lot of movies those years and early 00s

I’ve never seen the iron giant.  I really should but it was one the kids watched without me and I’ve just never got around to watching it

We will do a couple more, WTF.

#39:  QUIZ SHOW

80s' #25 and my #84.      It stuck with me enough on my one watch to make the list.   Great story and performances.

#38:  THE SWEET HEREAFTER

This was my #8 movie, and the only one in my top 10 that wasn't on his, so we are transitioning to where it will be all movies on both of our lists and get more chalky.    He has 2 left very high on his list.

Anyway about this movie - usual descriptors for movies I tend to love:  haunting, emotional, gut wrenching.  This one is a drama about a community dealing with loss after a horrible accident.    It stuck with me long after watching it, and it affects me more now that I am a parent.

Top 10 for me, maybe ever, certainly within the 90s.  And I'm not even a parent.  :)

Lol.  I was doing the same.   I vividly remember the wall of Titanic and having to deal with all those ####### double VHS.

Sixth sense release was hell.  Constantly out and every 15 minutes someone would ask if I could check the drop box.  I wasn’t a manager but knew all their pins and was super tempted to put BRUCE WILLIS IS DEAD on the little register marquee

Muchas gracias for the earlier recommendation of the The Rewatchables podcast.  I needed a new listen for the couple hours a day I'm walking the dogs and the first four I've streamed fit the bill perfectly (a couple of which I hope show up here).  I'm as tired of Bill Simmons as the next middle-aged guy, but so far he's kept it low key and co-hosts/guests have been great.  Even better, there's enough to get me through the summer.
They are pretty funny.   If I am remembering correctly one of their funniest ones is a movie that i think will surprise people in the top 25.

Also, give Cine-Files a try.   Title sounds a little snooty, but it's not at all.   The guys hosting are a directing teacher and a voice actor.   They slowly go through the movie (ie average episode is 2hours probably), but they have good banter and info.

:lmao:    Loved the annoying bastards that would just stand by the dropbox and either ask people as they come in or ask you to check every damn movie returned.

That was probably one of the most fun I’ve had though.  I hated the register though always too many people complaining about things

i also worked there when they switched to the due by noon the day after or some confusing promo and so many people would have late fees.  If they complained even a little bit I just used the MODs pin to wipe it and get them the hell out of there

Can do and I tend to avoid bagging on lists but yours grinded on a few sore spots in quick succession, the hate of Dances With Wolves, right on the heels of OHMYGAAAAAAWD Clueless embrace, right into the artsy-fartsy Magnolia PTA luvfest.  Sorry but, could not resist seething urge to strike back.

Dude, relax.  It's just some guy's opinion.

I will say that when I looked at the top 40 I was pleasantly surprised how it shook out, and I thought the masses in general will like the finished product.

That said, 80s and I are bracing ourselves and making a prediction list of movies that are going to get the "wtf - how did X not get on a list??!!" reactions.

I'm actually going to do a next 100 after this.  So NO SPOTLIGHTING!

Great selection.

Prison rules, eh?

Just for @Manster I will post another quickly for a palate cleanser.     I think this is the hardest I remember laughing in the theater.

44:  THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY

"How'd you get the beans above the frank??"    :lmao:

This was my #24 movie, and 80s #89 movie.   For me, this was the #2 comedy on my list.   My #1 I am on an island with, and will be coming up soon.
Ditto on the bolded.

43. Malcolm X

Denzel and Spike both just operating at their peak. Another of many movies here  that my dad insisted I watch in HS. Unlike so many others, this did not leave a mark with me. It was only years later that it really hit me.  Boy did it hit me, what biopics are better??
The scene that sticks with me is when the white hippie chick goes up to Malcolm to ask if there's anything she or people like her can do to support his cause, and he responds:

No.
