Top 101 Movies of the 90s. We are done. If I knock out Amadeus/Brazil/Ran, We get to have an 80s countdown!! (1 Viewer)

"NUTTY PROFESSOR".!!1!!1!!!1

COMING UP? GO #### YOURSELVES.

OR GO TO THE BEATLES THRESD.

WHAT KINDA DOPE ARE YOU PEOPLE ON?

Been going between Pineapple Express and Face Mints myself.

0 clue what our edibles are though.  Might pop one of those in later too.

you ####### hippies need to invade the Zep thread and bemoan your cuck savior warbling "Going To California" - away w'ya

*pass to my left, and i'll cut ya"

except for the the chubby kid Shuke - he good.

Any fool with a #### can make a baby, but only a real man can raise his children

36:  BOYZ N THE HOOD

This has got to be up there when we are talking about great debut movies for a director, right?   I think one of the bigger surprises of the 90s was just how damn good Cube was in this movie.  Furious and Doughboy were the two characters and stories that stood out most to me.    My #42 and 80s' #61.

I saw it somewhat recently... the athlete friend storyline and acting didn't really- but the rest has held up really well, albeit a little preachy (from the standpoint of everything we NOW know... but didn't then). great movie and such an incredible debut from Singleton. Poetic Justice was a pretty decent followup- thought Janet and Tupac were good in it... but then the wheels fell off with HIgher Learning.. such a turd- and I think he was trying to reference some of Spike Lee's approach with Flat characters acting flat/stereotyped to further the story or theme, but none of it worked.

We consider ourselves bi-costal if you consider the Mississippi River one of the coasts.

35:  WAITING FOR GUFFMAN

I am staring at my list and remembering this movie as I type, and I am pretty sure in a couple years and a rewatch or two this will be farther up for me.   It was a pretty recent first time watch for me.   Corky St. Clair is :lmao:      This was my #74 and 80s' #29

Well the sun is gone so let me throw out the next movie, one that was top 10 on my list but I don't think KP has seen. It's actually been a difficult film to see but I highly encourage people to check it out.

#37-A Brighter Summer Day

It's story is similar to City of God. It's a sprawling look at the life of poor kids in 1950s and 60s Taiwan. They run the streets, get in gang fights, fall in love, deal with pressure from the Communist Party, etc. Where it differs is in the style. This isn't highly stylized or hyper edited. It plays out like a novel.

I watched this one based on your recommendation several months ago, and since Yi-Yi is one of my all-time favorite movies.  Not quite Yi-Yi for me, but deserving of a spot on your list.  Thanks for pointing this one out to me!

I can’t remember if I’ve seen it.  I’m pretty sure I have.  best in show is probably still my favorite

:goodposting:   If I had to choose just one of them to single out, it would be her.  But everyone was pitch-perfect.

awesome - going to watch "Mascots" tonight (Netflix) ...the only Christopher Guest mockumentary I haven't seen ...then probably go with the "Mighty Wind" that is on (Hulu/Prime/HBO Max)

ok so I think this is the last of the movies only to make my list,  my dad turned me on to this

34: Underground

This is the movie I described as more coke and hallucinogens than sawdust and mold. It’s basically a 20th century history of Yugoslavia told through the story of two best friend war criminals/military heroes (depending on the changing winds of the Eastern Europe). It's a weird blurring of genres: war, comedy, fantasy. Very Eastern European, lots of drunk fights. Also it is 3 hours long. Seems like the director was given an unlimited budget to make the ultimate movie about the 50 year history of Yugoslavia and he threw the whole kitchen sink at it. This movie is so full of crazy energy, it’s unlike anything else I’ve ever seen.

A brilliant film in every regard. It was so good the first time, I went back and watched it again later that day.

I was watching parts of it recently and it seem to hold up really well.

Floppo's post rang true - I think Ricky's arc was the weakest, but I still think the rest is top notch.

I've never heard of this!  Watching the trailer makes me think there's an equal shot that I love or hate it.  Going to have to give it a whirl.

Somehow this also sparked Beau Travail for me and I realized I had said I hadn't seen it.  Wtf?  It's my favorite from Claire Denis.  I drink wine sometimes.  Like, whenever I wrote that.  And also now.

80s was right.   That pick was the last of any movie that was just on one list.

Now we are at the heart of the countdown.  33 movies left that were on both of our countdowns.   How it worked out is that these movies scored 102 or fewer points.    So both our rankings added up to 102.   There will be some movies that are a bigger discrepancy.   I think his lowest movie making this list is in his 50s and mine is my #73.

Our #1 movie scored a 10, and I think that might put in context what might happen in the top 10.  So that movie if it was one of our #1s, it was the other's #9.  Or it could be that it was both our #5, and we just disagreed that much at the very top.

Oh good, I thought we had spoken about it before so I was confused but I was drinking margaritas last night (and also am now). I also think you said John Malkovich was in Age of Innocence. He wasn’t. Sorry but at least you are someone is reading your posts.

You have an update on that running list?  ;)
