Top 101 Movies of the 90s. We are done. If I knock out Amadeus/Brazil/Ran, We get to have an 80s countdown!! (1 Viewer)

and that is't meant as a shot. I am sure there are some great 80s movies that you should insist I see.
I didn't take it as one.  I need to watch new stuff vs watching Die Hard for the 100th time. I think my starting list is going to be far more rigid than for the 90s one.   Rewatches aren't going to do much I don't think.

I'd be curious what some of your 80s blindspots are.

This CONVO is about The Bridges of Madison County

I meant to reply to this and even may have started a reply but I don't think I ever submitted it. I saw this for the first time in February preparing to do my list. It was a blizzard outside and so I was just staying in watching 90s movies that were streaming. I saw this on HBOMax and thought, "why not I can always half pay attention and half go on my phone." I honest to god can't believe how much I liked it and got sucked in. I thought Eastwood and Streep had great chemistry. She blew me away (again). There is no way in the world I would have enjoyed or appreciated this when it came out. Now that I am hitting middle age and have in a relationship that's 15+ plus years old now, I can appreciate this. I think every married person has some secret desire for excitement and romance again. My marriage still has that but obviously no 15 year relationship has the same spark as a new relationship or even a secret, forbidden relationship. Plus it got me thinking about my parents what their hidden lives could have been. Tremendous movie.
My first wife dragged me to the theater to see it -- I was aware of the hype for the book and it's not my kind of thing so I never would have seen the movie otherwise. I didn't hate it.

I will take that. Obviously when I made my list I had no idea how the combined list would end up. I was surprised when KP posted Bridges and I realized it made the combined 100. I was expecting to be ridiculed on that and was surprised by it kind of sneaking by.

For all the bull#### they try to teach you in high school, I graduated with about half of it. But then, I didn't go to school but half the time. The other half, I was out selling dope.

My #65, 80s' # 33.    Came out a couple years after Boyz, I remember seeing this one in High School and being blown away.    I had Boyz higher, 80s had this one higher they just ended up a few spots from each other on the countdown by a few points.  Still felt as raw as ever, I think the heart of Boyz stood out to me a tad more on the rewatch.

Similar pace tomorrow.   I work, so I might post one before taking off, 1-2 at break if I have one, then some after dinner.

O-Dog was a beast.  I watched every movie Larenz Tate was in after his performance in Menace.

Definitely not a top 40 for the decade for me.  I think I have it right around the century mark.

Brazil is a must-see, one of my favorites of all time. May not be your thing but you at least need to check it out.

yeah, it's a required sit, imo, for the "filmie" types - of which i consider KP to be one of the bored's finest ... surprised it's not been in his rotation.

lifetime of chops were just waiting to bust out and be fulfilled - yeah, dude could bring it ... the nuance he lent to that character's complexity was amazing.

Robert Duval as the backwoods shut-in really sticks with me too ... just like Kilgore, he wasn't on screen much, but he left his prints all over the imagination of the viewer.
This was a movie where I didn’t want to like the story but some incredible individual performances just made it awesome.  Thornton, Ritter, Duvall and Yoakam.

also even knowing about the twist The Usual Suspects is way at the top of my list.  So many great characters and one liners
Watched this with my boys the other night.  Neither knew anything about it and they loved it, especially the ending.  I remember watching it the first time and not knowing and being blown away.  Also, it has the Chicken Man in a small role.  I’m not a Spacey fan but he’s good in this.  Love it - and the nod to Casablanca in title (I assume) is nice.  Ranked WAY too low here.  It’s easy top 20 and probably top 10.

Yoakam's turn as Doyle was the epitome of "heel", and he walked it perfectly - there may be others as heel-y, but none heelier.  he owned that character, such a great piece of work.

my favorite scene with Ritter is when Carl drops them off, prior to visiting Doyle ... man, it tugs at ya, you know? paraphrasing (in Carl voice): "the Bible says a man ought not lay with another man ... but the way you love that boy and his momma ... well i reckon that can't be bad"

it's so poignant to see this man-child reasoning the paradox, and then coming to the realization that things aren't as black n' white as his stunted mind once thought - he is at total peace at that moment, all he loves in the world is now seen to, and he makes such a sacrifice to see that they remain as such.

i friggin' love the guy.

####, catch me after a 24 pack and a fistful of shots (like last night), and that thar scene brings the dust up - there a couple others in that flick that deliver likewise, but that one is a mutha.

It will be interesting to see what we are the closest on.  This next wave of 5 movies we were pretty far apart on.  First we were within 11 of, but then it's 48, 33, 64, and 41 points away from each other on the rankings.    It's 50/50 as to who was higher for the movies too.

In the end, I think that's why the combo rankings turned out the best product for a list like this, it evened out our swings of opinion a bit, and there are some movies that are heavy hitters coming up.

I’m just happy to see others liked Sling Blade so much. I saw 3 or 4 times but not since I was maybe 21 years old. I had no idea if that movie would even get ranked by KP yet alone have any other fans here.

One of my ex-wives talked me into seeing it on home video years after it came out. I knew the name of the film and some of the cast  but, for some reason I still can't fathom (the title?), I thought it was a slasher movie (not a fan).

I LOVED it. Other posters have already nailed most of its virtues, so I don't have much to add other than wondering why Yoakam hasn't been in more films.

Doing more 80s research tonight with Teen Wolf.

I will say that after last night's rewatch of Empire I am going to be more hesitant about rewatches of action movies for the 80s.  Way too many action movies are not holding up.   If we do this thing, I think there will be a lot less rewatching and more getting to movies I haven't seen like Amadeus, Ran, or Brazil.

I am not doing an 80s countdown with you until you see those 3 movies.

yeah check out Brazil for sure.  I have the box set, there are a couple different versions / endings IIRC

ok, just popped this clip on YouTubez - i kinda butchered the wording, but the gist is still 100%

segues into BBT borrowing rather liberally from Coppola, as Carl's descent is set amongst surreal landscape & music, ala Captain Willard.

jfc, what a flick.

Yoakam is so totally underrated - both his music and acting.  He would be in my top 5 all-time singer-actor combos.  Probably 3rd behind Sinatra and Timberlake.*

That’s an interesting question. Sinatra is the clear 1.01 because he could stand alone as either one. His music is obviously what he’s most known for but he was a top shelf actor too. Will Smith is up there too even if his music leans cheesy.

Bowie and Will Smith are both good calls.  I’m not a huge fan of either of their music so think I’d still rank Yoakam higher.

I thought for sure I’d get more love for my Sinatra Greatest Movie Star pick - bunch of haters!

Oh, there's one more thing about Tracy I think you should know...

#30:  ELECTION

This was the one we were close on.   My #54, 80s' #43.    I think this this hits home because a lot of us either did our do have a Tracy in our lives.   Maybe a Mr. McAllister too.    The abrupt shifts in the voiceover like the above (there's a reason I didn't post the whole quote if you've seen the movie) had me rolling.   I like just about anything Perrotta has done and the stuff that has been based on his works.

soooo ... Broderick had himself a nice decade, eh?

redemption for Bueller, which is still the biggest of his crimes.

speaking of Ms. Witherspoon, one of the great black comedies of the past 50 years (starts with FREE, ends in WAY) is still out there, just waiting to be unearthed - blacker and comedy-er than even "Election"

if i had to set odds, i'd put it at 500-1 to show up, but - if it does - my money's on it being an 80s selection.

YES, WAS HER GREATEST ROLE EVER!

❤ Reese

The littering must stop!

Great movie.

Legislative. Executive. Judiciary.

I need to watch Election again. It was once and a long time ago that I saw it and I remember it as only okay.

It was just on broadcast TV last night, but only barbarians watch movies that way.

Funny story for how I first saw election. It was senior year in Film Study class. You wouldn't think at a Catholic School that a movie like Election would be shown but our film teacher was rather subversive.

i think Bowie goes 1.01 - pretty good in his flicks (especially "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence"), plus he did the stage - his B'way run in "Elephant Man" was nothing short of epic.

not sure if The Man Who Fell to Earth negates or elevates his status here.

but he also did a great Warhol in Basquiat.

but I'll still take Lurie and Waits together in one of my faves, Down By Law (with a pre US-famous Roberto Benigni).

or Tom Petty in The Postman.
