Top 101 Movies of the 90s. We are done. If I knock out Amadeus/Brazil/Ran, We get to have an 80s countdown!! (1 Viewer)

I will take a bit of a break.  I think we will do 24-21 tonight, then do 20-11 tomorrow and finish up the final 10 on Tuesday.

I work both days, so it will have a similar flow - 1 or 2 early am, a couple at break, a couple after work, the rest at night.

Never seen or heard of this might have to check it out
The Player is fantastic. Comedy, satire, noir, a movie about Hollywood and commercialism, its' great and the opening shot is a 7 minute single take that is very cool

3 is probably the best, but 1 is very good.  2 kinda sucks and part 4 is kind of an abomination

Lion King is a glaring omission
That is my fault. When it came out I was just getting that age where I was too cool for anything that seemed childish. My little sister loved it too. So it's never been a favorite of mine. I actually had Beauty and the Beast in my top 100.

Se7en not being in the top 10 is a travesty.  Watched it 2 nights ago.  Absolutely a masterpiece.
Part of my hint with my post above on us not being close on most of these movies is that it will be more fun for the peanut gallery because you can blame one of us.

For me and looking at my list, it always hovers in that 12-20 range for the decade.

i think I was a freshman in high school and one of my buddies realized chicks loved the lion king so we got a Lion King ice cream cake from baskin robbins and threw a small party .  Pretty sure that’s where I got a Lion King plate that I used to throw loose change on and later on people would do blow off of it my parties.  Poor Timon and Pumba were so scarred from razor marks

If Pulp and Heat aren’t in the top five I will burn this MF’er to the ground.

If The Big Lebowski isn't top 10, this entire exercise is invalidated.

Spotlighting......but I agree 100%

Like I said, I had some predictions about the rest of the countdown.

1.  I think (hope) overall people will be pleased with the top 33.

2.  That said, I think there will be some upsettedness about the order of said movies.

3.  I think as we go further and further there will be more and more "wtf" posts about what is not going to be on the list at all.   Remember - only 33 left, and I am guessing some playing along have a long list of movies they love.

4.  I circled 4 titles that I think will be the biggest surprises in the top 33.

For some additional context, I think it's going to be my rankings that will take the most vitriol.    Remember how I said I thought about doing a 90s countdown years ago, but couldn't get myself to pull the trigger?   One reason for that was about a half a dozen very popular movies that at that time would not have even sniffed my list.  People familiar with my takes in the movie thread probably have a decent guess which I am talking about.

Now combine that with the fact that each of our #1s aren't in the other's top 20 (sorry for the spoiler there, 80s), and we have the bolded above.   Like I have said, I think the list of movies in the top 20 as a whole will be satisfactory to the peanut gallery, but there are reasons for how the rankings shaped up the way they did.

This isn't going to have a happy ending.

#25:  SE7EN

I was noticing something for the last few, so I took a look and wrote stuff down.    Long story short, despite having 49 movies the same, 80s and I weren't close to each other on many movies with our rankings.   Of the top 30, there are exactly 8 movies where we are even within 10 points of each other in our rankings - which 100% explains our top 4 since all 4 were that way.

This was my #17 and his #60, so we had Seven and Toy Story back on our lists just in way different positions.   I've seen this movie maybe more than any other on the countdown.  There was a time in college when I fell asleep watching this every night for about 1 month straight.  Those were some interesting dreams.  The Sloth victim was one of the bigger jumps I've had in the theater.
I’ve only seen it once but it has stayed in my mind for a long time, as Fincher movies often do.

The Player is phenomenal.  One of my favorite underrated movies of the 90s.

I’ll probably go back and read this thread, but after just scanning the rankings now, it’s hard to be further apart on 90s movies than me and the OP so far.

Yeah. You’re bad at ranking good 90’s movies. 😜

You know I’m just messing with you.   I appreciate you and 80’s providing this safe space for us all to judge you and make you feel bad about your ranking skills.  😳
It's all good.  I think each of us will take a bit of #### for ranking movies way too low on our personal lists, but I think 80s and my tastes are pretty similar so I thought we'd balance out in the end, and I think overall we did.

We will talk about them more as we get to them, but as I was doing this there were probably a core 50-60 movies that were going to be on the list.  There were 20-30 for me that were either new movies or ones that I can tell are climbing my rankings.  There were an additional 20-30 that are slipping down my ratings.

A great example of the 2nd category would be My Cousin Vinny.   A couple years ago, that wouldn't have been on my list, now it's in the top 50.   One of the movies going the other way would be Contact.  Spoiler alert that it's not at the top, but that is one that I originally had penciled in to the 30th or so spot, but I think fell into the 70s for me.

I got some "for-your-eyes-only" #### to show you.

#24:  JACKIE BROWN

This was a rare one we were in sync with.  My 36, his 34.   Depending on the day, it's my favorite Tarantino.   I wonder how much of that has to do with it being an adaptation from another source.  I was wondering tonight - is the book loaded with so many N-bombs, or is that just Quentin adding his special flair?

IMO the next movie was the biggest surprise of this countdown as far as what was on it and their rank.

I went to see this opening night (Xmas) and the stupid projector broke midway through.  I was headed out of town till new years with my family so had to wait a freaking week to find out what happened.  Still burns me up.

Now it's on pretty much every time I'm flipping channels - and I can't not watch.  Poor Melanie getting Louis' blood boiling to the point he kills her is one of my favorite underrated Tarantino moments.

Ladies and gentlemen, you are such a wonderful crowd, we'd like to rank a little movie for you. It's one of my personal favorites and I'd like to dedicate it to a young man who doesn't think he's seen anything good today - @TripItUp this one's for you.

Well, she got that magna cum laude ##### on her that done fried up your brain!

#23:  BASIC INSTINCT

I think I echo 80s' thoughts when I say it's a shame they don't make movies like this anymore.   Sharon Stone was amazing in this.   Seems like this is peak of the sex/murder/thriller movies geared to adults.  This was my #40 and 80s' #27.

Oh, @scorchy - I think it was you talking about starting the Rewatchables.   This was the episode that I was hinting at that was one of their absolute best.

yes!!

I thought for sure you guys overlooked this.

I have it closer to 50 and I like it more than most so thought it was getting overlooked.

Will move it up on the queue - right now I'm just sort of bouncing around.  Today's was a movie I expect to show up here soon.

Mrs. Scorchy and I watched Basic Instinct a few month back.  Still a fun movie (and I've always had a thing for Jean Tripplehorn) but the terrible dancing in the night club is the height of unintentional comedy.  It's also tough to listen to Sharon Stone talk about her feelings re: the most famous scene.

Both of us were raving about it in the movie thread, but it was still a surprise for me how high I ranked it, and that 80s had it even higher and it landed here.

I think as I was going through my list and rewatches another big theme for me was movies that just stood out from the pack.   Like I said in the comment - they don't make 'em like this anymore.   There were dozens of action movies and comedy movies just blurring together, but then Basic Instinct was a blast of sexy goodness.

The other big surprise for me with my list was that I had 3 Verhoeven flicks on my list.   I also have Starship Troopers and Total Recall in the 70s and 80s, but didn't make the countdown.   Those were the types of movies, flawed as they are, that stood out more for me than the typical action flicks of the decade.

You will get no argument from me on this point.   For me that stuff is still far overshadowed by scenes like the first trip to Catherine's + the car ride to the station.

For me, this is more consistent and overall a better film than Pulp Fiction. The entire story and editing is brilliant.

Pulp Fiction has some better parts, but it also has some weak ones, like the Uma/Travolta dating episode.

Far more problematic for me personally is Fabienne.

That’s probably the most famous scene in the movie!

We've become bored with watching actors give us phony emotions. We are tired of pyrotechnics and special effects. While the world he inhabits is, in some respects, counterfeit, there's nothing fake about Truman himself. No scripts, no cue cards. It isn't always Shakespeare, but it's genuine. It's a life.

#22:  THE TRUMAN SHOW

My 41, 80s' 22.   Yet another that is climbing the rankings the more I watch it.   I ended up with 3 Jim Carrey movies on my list, but none of the typical silly comedies.  Quite a late 90s run he had.  I was just thinking about the horrible crap they put him through to stay scared to leave the area.  In other hands this could be a really dark movie.

The future's not set. There's no fate but what we make for ourselves.

#21  TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY

My 38, 80s' 24.    I don't think I had seen the original before this one blew me away in the theater.   I thought the liquid metal f/x was going the be the apex of movies.   Add that to my love of time travel anything, and I was hooked.   Now it doesn't look quite so great, but Linda Hamilton still is.  What a blast to watch.

He better be worth it. He better go home and cure a disease, or invent a longer-lasting light bulb.

#28:  SAVING PRIVATE RYAN

My #25 and 80s' #58.      Still one of the best war movies and realistic depictions of battle (so I've read from veteran's comments in articles).      I can only speak for myself, but as I watch this it drops ever so slightly due to Spielberg's usual emotional hand holding throughout the movie.  Again small nitpick when we are basically talking top 2 or 3 movies from years they came out.  Last I looked this was on Prime in 4K.   Looks amazing still.
Great movie that should be ranked around 15.   Great story and great scenes.   Many parts of the move are heart wrenching and you don’t really want to watch but you cannot stop watching.

#22:  THE TRUMAN SHOW
The best Carrey film and ages really well.

Ranking is appropriate.

ETA:  Ed Harris felt like the wrong guy, but pulled it off.  Definitely a stretch for him as the "creative artist."   He belongs much more in Apollo 13 as the NASA director guy, that's his wheelhouse.

T2 is about where I’d have it.  Among the best sci fi actions of all time.

the kid actor always bothered me…to this day I think he was terribly miscast.

Should be higher, but okay.

#25:  SE7EN

Makes my top 10, so slightly undervalued for me.   But I like dark, and this movie is about as dark as dark can get.  Freeman, Paltrow and Spacey terrific.  Cinematography and general set design epic.  Pitt was just okay for me, not terrible, not amazing...I think he nailed the final scene but was a bit out of his league in some of the earlier scenes.

Speaking of dark, I'm assuming 8mm didn't make the cut...now that's a dark ### film.

For all the bull#### they try to teach you in high school, I graduated with about half of it. But then, I didn't go to school but half the time. The other half, I was out selling dope.

#31:  MENACE II SOCIETY

My #65, 80s' # 33.    Came out a couple years after Boyz, I remember seeing this one in High School and being blown away.    I had Boyz higher, 80s had this one higher they just ended up a few spots from each other on the countdown by a few points.  Still felt as raw as ever, I think the heart of Boyz stood out to me a tad more on the rewatch.

I'm partial to Menace and probably in my Top 20.  It still holds up well.   I loved Boyz when I was younger but had a tough time getting through it recently. Those Furious Styles soliloquies make me cringe.

And yes, definitely watch Brazil KP.  Classic Gilliam.

Enjoying the rankings and commentary.  Appreciate it!

Movies I haven't seen in the top 50 thus far

The Player

Three Colors Red

Underground

Brighter Summer Day

Really looking forward to knocking these out.

Hope you love subtitles and long movies.
Subtitled slow movies kill me, but if they are fast and don't have a ton of dialogue like Apocalypto then I don't notice.

Regardless, I've ran out of good movies to watch so I am pleasantly surprised to see 10 or so movies here that I haven't seen.
