Top 101 Movies of the 90s. We are done. If I knock out Amadeus/Brazil/Ran, We get to have an 80s countdown!! (2 Viewers)

It ain’t no ****ing ball park neither! Now look, maybe your method of massage differs from mine, but you know touching his wife’s feet and sticking your tongue in the holiest of holies ain’t the same ****ing ball park. It ain’t the same league. It ain’t even the same ****ing sport!

#6:  PULP FICTION

My #6, and 80s' #19.     On our rewatch it flipped spots with Jackie Brown.   Such a great moive, and so many great scenes.  I don't think it would ever overtake Boogie, but it would probably be #2 if not for Fabienne and Tarantino.   Now everybody pile on 80s for having it too low!! ;)
I was totally  :jawdrop:  when I saw this movie for the first time. Probably in my top 5 of the decade along with Lebowski, Goodfellas, Boogie Nights and the one I constantly rewatch that hasn’t come up yet.

I'd watch Kill Bill 9/10 over Pulp but it was still a great movie and really propelled QT.  I wouldn't have it top 5 and probably not top 10 but would be in my top 20.
I find Kill Bill more rewatchable - it may be the pair of movies I've seen the most times - but Pulp is more groundbreaking and the better movie.

Well, let's not start sucking each other's d*cks quite yet.

I pull that one out anytime someone starts celebrating a sports win too early

Pulp Fiction was a breath of fresh air at the time.  Stylistically, dialogue, action...it was way out of the mainstream for the time and was distinctively Tarantino.  Some people like his style, others do not.   It's just one of those polarizing topics.

For me, I love different.  If every movie had a Disney like plot and dialogue, I think I'd stop watching movies.  Tarantino gives us something different and Pulp Fiction was the mainstream introduction into that kind of different.  Style matters.

I could tell this was going to be something outside the box.  Despite not yet having seen Reservoir Dogs, I made sure to catch this on opening night.  Theater was maybe 1/3 full.  When I'd go see it again a couple months later, the theater was much more lively

i'll take Res Dogs over Pulp all day, every day.

along with the one he scripted for Tony Scott, which is running outta time to pop up on this countdown - matter of fact, i think it's the best thing he's ever been associated with, in any capacity.

outside of those 3 (and Pulp  is a very distant 3rd) you can have him.

Of course when I say uneven, I mean for me - I don't really like John Goodman much in it, and I like the first half a bit more than the 2nd half.   I like the intro to all the characters more than I do hanging out with them.  Again, nit picks, and a few years ago it probably is not on my list at all.
How did I miss this before?

Love all three!

If I'm honest, I'd go Pulp slightly above the other two as it had more of an impact on pop culture......so may iconic scenes.

Oh, and Pulp holds a special place in my heart because my in-laws walked out of the theater during it!  I believe the syringe to chest part.....haha

yeah, i get the cultural impact it had on the 90s landscape, much like "Clueless" and "Scream" - i called them cultural tsunamis.

Pulp just seems forced to me - like pushing the envelope for pushing the envelope's sake - i'm not the biggest fan, and i'll let it be at that.

Tastes are so hard to define. I strongly dislike Reservoir Dogs even if it has the great Lawrence Tierney who was one of the meanest men to ever star on the screen.

I’ve never seen Reservoir Dogs. I heard about the ear scene and was like, nope!

I didn’t see Pulp Fiction until it was on VHS or DVD or whatever. I was staying at a friend’s house and he was touting it and I mentioned I hadn’t seen it, and he was like, we gotta fix that right away.

Pulp fiction might have the best soundtrack out of anything in the Top 100, unless they’re going to surprise us with a top 5 appearance by that movie with Bruce Lee’s kid

yeah, it's the " big" takeaway most have ...  just like Blake's (Alec Baldwin) sales screed in GGR - and both scenes were my least favorite in the respective flix ... total "meh"

Yep.....one of the best lines ever
the "...mmm" mid comment, and nod to taratino over the coffee always gets me... given the way the gourmet coffee rant was written earlier.

Kevin Smith wouldn’t have made my top 400
I figured you guys didn't put any Smith in here if we hadn't seen it by now ....I was holding out a shred of hope for Clerks.

Clerks and Mallrats make my 10 ten....Dogma is easily in the top 20.....Chasing Amy is top 30.

btw, if anybody was craving more bat#### crazy Amanda Plummer, she amped it up to the Nth in the 1996 gem i mentioned a couple days ago ... man, you guys really missed to boat on "Freeway" - easy top 10 for me.

Dan Hedeya, Brooke Shields, Reese W, Brittany Murphy, Keifer S, Bokeem Woodbine, Conchetta Ferrel ... just a sensational black comedy - cannot get enough of it.  Reese peaked here, imo, in her first starring vehicle - if you've never seen it, you'll never look at her the same afterwards.

OK, MR. POTTY MOUTH?!?

At first, I thought you were referencing Needful Things

It will be in my next 100ish

Another one you could easily argue as #1 for the decade.   It's my personal #2.

Acting, dialogue, screenplay, cinematography, design, casting...all of it is A+.

There is nothing I would change about this film

Yep.  In my Top 3 as well.  I've probably watched the first 2 hours 50x but will often change channel during the last 30 minutes or so.  Feels like you're the last one at the party on a really bad comedown from coke which I'm sure was the intention.

The comedic elements are definitely underrated.  John C. Reilly brings the lols throughout.   The bass was definitely taking away from Dirk's vocals.

98/99:

LIVE FLESH

HARD EIGHT

Some PTA just making the cut.  Phew.   In my mind I think I had written Hard Eight off a little bit and thought of it as a lower tier PTA.   But rewatching this one gave me a new love for it.   Great debut, and I think this is a PTA that even the haters might actually like since it's more just a straight up crime/noir flick.   Great cast too.
Hard Eight is a GREAT movie.  Some all-stars in there before a few of them WERE all-stars.  Just a great film.

I could see it not being in like your top 20 but out 100 films in the 90's and this one, starring Brandon Lee, not making the cut, is a glaring omission.

-P. Gallery
Interesting, wasn’t even on my radar. I liked the movie in middle school but not sure I’ve seen it since. I’ll take L from the peanut gallery.

Can we all agree the 90s was the best decade for films?  Making a Top 10 or even Top 25 list without omitting classics is near impossible.

Check out the regular movie thread to read my reaction to that rewatch.
Oh I can imagine.....I just loved the movie....it's not perfect, but I think it stands up.....and the fact that Brandon Lee died during the filming adds to the legacy.....also the soundtrack is one the best movie soundtracks ever and fits the movie perfectly.

I was the opposite.  I remember there being a small showing at some #### theater on campus in Madison and being super annoyed at the movie.  I just wasn't having it that night.    I don't think I started branching out movie-wise until a few years after and it started clicking then.

Not a fan of him in general, and don't love his character either.  I am more of a Donny, so I don't appreciate him yelling at him all movie.

That said, Goodman proves his acting chops in this movie.  Those subtle changes in tone as he yells then calmly says something to Dude are great to watch.

Yeah, I was in the mood for it the night I watched it and it didn't hold up at all.   Way cheesier than I remember (still love the core idea of the movie though).

Before we get to the top 5 I will say that the Kevin Smith movies were some of the biggest movers on my list in the other direction.   No way would I have thought that one didn't make my list, but I could barely get through any of them.  Chasing Amy was the closest, just because at least it had some heart.

aaaaaaaand my house money, as predicted, is doubled.
