Oh man.

You're kidding. I totally missed the list.

I need to get a better grip on the final list, then. It would behoove one. Especially before one runs his mouth like I just did.

You'll have to forgive me. I'm listening to The Rapture's Out Of The Races and Onto The Tracks and it's pretty jarring. Don't remember it this way. Whoa!
The funny thing is you are the second one to call out our lack of Toy Story.

Bound to happen. I wasn't really being critical, just joining you in the shout-out and giving an opinion.

Now for some real criticism:

I'm catching up on the thread and AAABatteries pointed out that Toy Story didn't make the list. Wow.

Toy Story would be around top twenty for me, and didn't even make your lists. That I hadn't thought of. I forgot that was nineties, actually.

Astounding Pixar movies from that era.

But you guys have already spoken to animation, so there's that criteria there.
It was Andy!  I just repeating it and then you.  It was like the telephone game.

Another recent a-ha moment about Fargo...

Carl gets himself killed over about $10k after he finds himself in possession of $1m. He refuses to pay Gaear for half of a POS car just because...once a small time crook always a small time crook. He just buried a million dollars!

Let it go, dude. But he just...can't.

so there's that.

The Movies I'd Rank Higher

93 - POINT BREAK - makes my top 20

82 - CASINO - underappreciated by the critics, makes my top 20

81 - APOLLO 13 - top 20 for me

63 - A FEW GOOD MEN - top 20 for me

41 - BRAVEHEART - top 10 for me

33 - LAST OF THE MOHICANS - top 5 for me, what a soundtrack

28 - SAVING PRIVATE RYAN - best war movie of alltime IMHO

18 - GROUNDHOG DAY - I have this ranked #1 for the decade and one of the best comedies of all time...so many layers of genius

7 - BOOGIE NIGHTS - my #2 behind Groundhog Day and right before Silence of the Lambs, peak Seymour Hoffman

Would Rank Lower

97 - THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY - Yuck, not even in my top 200...couldn't get through it the first time

92 - THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT - my head hurts, keep the camera still...and by the way, not scary

77 - AS GOOD AS IT GETS - I mean, it's okay but zero desire to watch twice

58 - BEFORE SUNRISE - maybe makes my top 100 for nostalgia, but these coming of age movies just don't age well for me

49 - MAGNOLIA - overrated then, overrated now

26 - TOY STORY - you will not find anything animated in my top 50, but this is the best of the bunch

17 - L.A. CONFIDENTIAL - the award for the most overrated film perhaps in the history of cinema...was difficult to sit through the first time

12 - CHUNGKING EXPRESS - I like it, just not this high

11 - BEING JOHN MALKOVICH - same thoughts as LA Confidential...a critical darling that nobody cares about now

3 - UNFORGIVEN - strong film, I have it in the 20-30 range though

But would you rank it in your top 20 for the decade? Of course not.

It'd be close, I think. I'd have to look at the list and figure out whether there were twenty better movies in the decade. Was a good decade for movies and cinema, so you might be right. But it's probably one of the best neo-noirs this side of Chinatown.

No Forrest Gump? Have you no sentimentality?
I can't stand that movie. The whole country was under mass delusion or something when it came out. Highest grossing, best picture, best selling soundtrack, airport restaurant food chain all for a movie that fails to tackle a single tough question and instead is just, "hey remember Elvis? hey remember Vietnam? hey remember hippies?"

It really might be the greatest love story put on film. Just incredible. I was floored by how much it moved me.
77 - AS GOOD AS IT GETS - I mean, it's okay but zero desire to watch twice
It's really f'n funny, even if it's very questionable today with much of it's humor- though the point was Jack is an a-hole so I think they got the spirit of it right.
17 - L.A. CONFIDENTIAL - the award for the most overrated film perhaps in the history of cinema...was difficult to sit through the first time
Freezing cold take.
11 - BEING JOHN MALKOVICH - same thoughts as LA Confidential...a critical darling that nobody cares about now
They should. It's genius. But I get it's very bizarre and definitely not a movie I would recommend to anybody.

I guess I get your point, except for tackling a small thing called "The Meaning of Life"!

The whole movie was a commentary and what is actually important in life and that the simplicity of love and family outranks all the BS that goes on in the world with people chasing power, glory and money. That someone with an IQ of 75 could grasp the basic concepts so many people failed to understand and that all our buzzing about to climb the ladders of society is just us chasing our tails when the thing we really want and need is right in front of our face the whole time.

Jenny didn't get that the love she didn't get from her dad and chased around for years was waiting back home in Forrest. Lieutenant Dan didn't get that the point of life wasn't to die gloriously in battle until Forrest showed him. All the hippies and side characters that mocked him didn't realize what they were seeking he already had. He fell into some remarkable success just by being consistently good, honest and loyal and loving his momma and Jenny. He experienced all that life had to offer without compromising or being selfish.

I did my top 100 movies of the 00s (well, sort of) and the top 50 of the first half of the 10s. I've been wanting to do the 1990s, but kept hitting a wall as I thought about it. I think a bit of the hesitation was my take on some pretty popular 90s movies doesn't line up much with the masses. But, in the end I just figured WGAF? It's just a fun exercise to attempt to generate more good movie discussions and take a trip down memory lane as I rewatch too many 90s movies.

All that said, I did bring along a partner for the ride. @Ilov80s was willing to stick his neck out there as well. We will each do our 100 lists, then we will combine them for top 100 countdown that I will start on my day off Wednesday.

Shawshank #5? Shawshank is better than #5 in all movies of all time

I’ve still never seen it
This the 90's equivalent of not seeing The Goonies.

The thing is, they are both entertaining......I'm sure you've watched lots of movies that are worse by any objective measure. I guess my question is why not watch? I guess it's just taking a stand against the movie at this point?

Pretty much. That and a general disdain for any post 80s Tom Hanks

Speaking of....

I just saw The Goonies for the 1st time in my life a few months ago, and let me tell you.....that is damn near the top of the dumbest movies I've ever seen.

Now...I concede, I'm a 90s child, and I am quite sure not having seen it as a youth when it came out probably works against me. I'd bet the majority of people who love that movie, there's a large childhood sentimentality there.

But for all the hype I've always heard, man was I disappointed. Honestly, if I ever see it again, it will be too soon.

It's a goofy teen/kid adventure movie, and there are no Oscar worthy performances in it.

We who grew up with the movie, had no expectations.....The Goonies is a great slice of the 80's....so yea, it's sentimental for sure. Coming back to it with no history, and with expectations......I can see how it wouldn't hit like it did for kids of the 80's.

WIIIIIIIIIIILLLLLSOOOOONNNNN!!!!

The secret, I don't know... I guess you've just gotta find something you love to do and then... do it for the rest of your life. For me, it's going to Rushmore.

#15: RUSHMORE

There are 3 specific movies that I believe I am going to take heat for bringing down the ranking in the top 15. As I said, keep two things in mind - this is why I thought the collaborative list would be the best way to go, and a few years ago none of the 3 would have made my rankings, or if they did it would be way closer to 100. This is the first, but I think the one with the least anger attached. Yes, for the most part I hate Wes Anderson movies, but this is the exception. This was my #34, and 80s' #17.
Just watcched Rushmore again for the first time in at least a decade. Still holds up. Great music and pretty much everything Max and Herman do is hilarious.

So I guess we both have dead people in our families.

And then I knew for sure when they went skinny dipping in Mr. Blume's swimming pool, giving each other handjobs while you were taking a nap on the front porch.
