Tyreek Hill Detained On The Way To The Game (5 Viewers)

It’s weird I have to type this on one of my favorite fantasy forums; essentially making it boring. BUT: Pennsylvania v. Mimms made it clear that cops can request a driver to exit their vehicle during a traffic stop for little reason, without it violating your fourth amendment rights. (The “I know my rights” screamers are 99% wrong when they’re screaming it about this).

However, just write the guy a ticket and keep it moving. You pulled over THAT car AND it didn’t even flee. Write them a ticket and move on. Are you shocked the driver of that car is a rich *******?

That's surprising to me. And I thought you didn't have to roll your window down any further than a crack in order to communicate.

Shocker, after reviewing the body cam footage, the cops were the aggressor here.

Yeah, that's a complete misrepresentation of what happened in the video. Tyreek clearly was being belligerent and not listening to police commands.

It’s not.
It is. You're completely disregarding Hill's behavior in all of this. You have him on your FF team?

It’s a state law. It varies.

You probably don’t have to roll it down. But honestly…other than being a dickhead, why wouldn’t you? It’s just easy to say you’re acting suspicious or in a manner similar to concealing a crime. Then you’d (generally) have to exit when asked anyway.

I’m not familiar with any state penal law or VTL regarding rolling your window down. You’re saying there’s a penal law/vehicle and traffic law “failure to roll your window down” or something similar to that?

I’m not dismissing his behavior.

The cops have to be better than this. If just the minuscule of an offense (literally talking and rolling up a window) elecits this sort of response, go find another career.

The cop was put on leave.
The cops were hesitant to release this footage.

Tyreek ended up with a minor traffic violation.

Definitely a massive overreaction and unprofessional incident for these guys.

You can do that but the officers do have a right to ask you to step out at any time during the stop. If you don't they will remove you and you will be going to jail.

The footage was released a day later. Did you read somewhere that they were hesitant to release it?

I agree with everything else, however.

You can still be detained and not arrested.

Tyreek will have no problems from this incident. Not with the NFL, not with the Miami PD, not with anyone.

You don't be yanking people out of their car, without giving them a chance to actually get out of their car, and throw them on the ground.

Tyreek, you still a dummy and rotten person, but you were trumped by a couple bigger tools yesterday.

If the police have to open your door, you're being removed by them.

As Chris Rock said, "if the police have to come get you, they're bringing an @ss-whooping with them".

You don't understand that the police can detain you, in cuffs, but not arrest you? That's what you don't understand?

And, yeah, I see you're the "All cops are dirty" kind of guy. Good luck with that.

Cops tend to overreact to the basic stuff. I've had terrible interactions with them over basic things like speeding (and I'm a white male ... can't imagine what others deal with). Just give me the ticket. And stopped for 30 mins in cuffs for jaywalking over a street closed to traffic which I still don't understand...there are no cars and people are walking all over the road. I know they have to deal with bad stuff. But the overreaction to minor issues is why people don't trust so many of them. There are good and bad cops. But seemingly they all have an attitude and from what I can tell aren't all that well educated. I think the Schefler incident showed exactly what's wrong with the bad cops ... overreacting, making up a story to protect themselves, etc. I mean if Hill is reckless driving, impound the car, give him a ticket, and let's be on with it. No need for the show of force.

I don't think a Chris Rock punchline is a good baseline for public servant behavior, but I am now aware that's all some people need to justify this.

Being less than completely wonderful to a cop simply is not, by law, allowed. And these cops' boss would say that as well.

I was joking, of course. You guys need to lighten up.

I think there is enough culpability on both sides here. I have no issue with him going to the ground and getting cuffed. I do take issue with the extra he got after he was cuffed. That was unnecessary.

They pulled him over for not wearing a seatbelt. They can run his license, registration and if there are no other issues, they issue a minor traffic violation. Context is important.

Escalating this into a situation that did not warrant it, is just dumb behavior by the police officers and I'm sure they will pay the price for it.

This

Tyreke is an idiot for rolling his window up and not rolling it back down promptly. The cops could have reacted better, but it ain't us on the streets dealing with all the garbage they have to. There's a reason they aren't as patient as some of us might be, looking for the outside in.

But seemingly they all have an attitude and from what I can tell aren't all that well educated.
I guess the same might be said about diva WR's?

It's no surprise this escalated into a p*ssing contest.

Tyreek could have de-escalated the situation just as easily as the cops

I hold the uniformed officers who get paid tax dollars to “protect and serve” to a higher standard than diva WRs. If the traffic cops can’t help but get into a pissing contest with the driver it’s on them. Get a new job.

They escalated it, but so did he.

Doesn’t everyone recognize that? He acted like an entitled child when he didn’t need to and they acted like over zealous power starved bullies when they didn’t need to.

Yep. The bold was a clear middle finger to the cops. Who then had their own testosterone-driven overreaction from there

Here's the main new points from it:

The union representing Miami-Dade police officers said in a statement Monday that Tyreek Hill was "uncooperative" and was only "redirected" to the ground while in handcuffs during his detainment before the Miami Dolphins' game Sunday because he refused orders to sit.

"Before the Dolphins game yesterday, an incident occurred where Tyreek Hill was placed in handcuffs before being released. First, to be clear, at no time was he ever under arrest. He was briefly detained for officer safety, after driving in a manner in which he was putting himself and others in great danger," Steadman Stahl, the president of the South Florida Police Benevolent Association said in a statement. "Upon being stopped, Mr. Hill was not immediately cooperative with the officers on scene who, pursuant to policy and for their immediate safety, placed Mr. Hill in handcuffs. Mr. Hill, still uncooperative, refused to sit on the ground and was therefore redirected to the ground," Stahl added. "Once the situation was sorted out within a few minutes, Mr. Hill was issued two traffic citations and was free to leave."

Sources told ESPN's Jeff Darlington on Monday that Hill received citations for careless driving and a seat belt violation. The Dolphins' Calais Campbell was also detained when he stopped on the scene to offer Hill support, but he did not receive a citation, sources told Darlington.
During an appearance Monday on "The Andy Slater Show," Stahl said the union has not been able to view body camera footage and officers didn't know who they had pulled over Sunday morning.

Stahl said Hill's driving pattern caught officers' attention; he was allegedly driving at a "high speed through a congested area" and Hill "did not want to comply" when asked to roll down his window.
"If Mr. Hill would have just complied, it would have just sped the process up. He chose not to, he chose to escalate the situation and turn it into something bigger than the Dolphins' win itself," Stahl said.

Stahl said on "The Andy Slater Show" that he wanted to review the body cam footage before developing an opinion on Hill's comments about not being disrespectful or using profanity toward the officers who detained him. He added that Hill did apologize at the end of the incident and shook the officers' hands.

So it sounds like, for now, I was correct in my initial assessment. We'll see if any evidence can be uncovered that disproves this, but I'm not betting on that.
So even if he did mouth off, or not, how does any of this change his availability? Will the NFL suddenly punish him if it can be proven he mouthed off? I guess I don't see the point of this still being discussed a day and half later. This just doesn't seem to be important. It's not as if he hit someone with a car like Rice did, who appears to be able to play the entire year without any accountability. If it's all about whether the cop should be tarred and feathered, then doesn't this border a politics discussion?
I think it's a bit further than just "mouthing off" based on the report and no, I do not think this is a political discussion. I'm simply talking about WHY he went to the ground in the first place.
Why do you think they cuffed Man of the Year and wildly regarded great guy Calais Campbell?

Damn, that video is wild. More on Tyreke's side after seeing it, but still don't know why he rolled his window up, that was dumb. Those cops could have handled things WAY more professionally.
Have you ever been stopped by the police, rolled your window down, and then rolled it back up? I have. 100%. Either because it was too cold (winter) or too hot (summer). Now, I don’t have tinted car windows. And if a cop told me to keep the window rolled down, I would politely comply, for sure.

So sorry, but I don’t see him rolling the window back up as any big deal. Dude is famous. He might not want to sit on the side of the road with the window down for everyone to see. Who knows, but it isn’t crazy to imagine that he had a valid reason.

You seem to be mistaking "have to" with "chose to", particularly when the suspect is in the process of doing what you requested and is vocalizing what he's doing.

He was abrasive to a cop. That’s just stupid. I guess stupid isn’t against the law, but don’t act surprised when they are abrasive back.
Abrasive back sure, putting someone on the ground and cuffing them is going too far. 4 cops, and Tyreek, not one time did I feel they were unsafe.

because a stranger walked into an active traffic stop trying to interfere. That's a definite no-no, especially in a tense situation. Watch some cop videos on you tube to find out what happens to people who try to interfere. Cops need to protect themselves and strangers walking into a scene they have no idea what they are going to do. Lot of these strangers try to free the suspect.

This

Tyreke is an idiot for rolling his window up and not rolling it back down promptly. The cops could have reacted better, but it ain't us on the streets dealing with all the garbage they have to. There's a reason they aren't as patient as some of us might be, looking for the outside in.
Might be that assuming they are dealing with "garbage" rather than people is the problem here, and that some cops actually agree with you.

You ever been trained in taking down a threat? Overwhelming force (or firepower) is the key. This isn't something new or different than what any law enforcement branch or the military uses. It's standard practice.

where was the threat? Watching the body cam video not one time was the police safety at risk.

You don't get to make that call sitting on your couch. Threat or someone resisting or obstructing you're going to get the same reaction.

Forcefully taking him down to the ground after he was already cuffed was totally unnecessary.

I get that the officer was upset that Tyreek rolled up his window but I don’t think he was resisting arrest at any time. They didn’t have any trouble getting the cuffs on him.

I'm glad to see a lot of people saying "they both screwed up". Everyone these days just wants to take a side, defend their point of view, argue against some person/group.

This is a prime example of where they both screwed up.... can't it be that? Does it really need to be "who screwed up more"?

I see the body cam video, the cops were never in danger..

Listen, I am pro-police, but come on. Police were wrong here.

Are you a cop? If so, you might want to review the law and POST standards. You are most definitely not permitted to use "overwhelming force".

I hold the uniformed officers who get paid tax dollars to “protect and serve” to a higher standard than diva WRs. If the traffic cops can’t help but get into a pissing contest with the driver it’s on them. Get a new job.

Not a cop. You absolutely use overwhelming force for the safety of you, the other officers and the actual suspect. The more men you have, the better.

Ya, that's a good point. I'm glad the Dolphins won that game because if they lost and Tyreek played bad, there would be a whole lot more noise going on about this. End of the day Tyreek had a good game and won, and the cops will rightfully get in trouble for this.

Yeah, I said as much above but so was Hill. There is culpability on both sides here.

Yea man the cops screwed up significantly more.

No, you are permitted to use reasonable force to protect yourself and any that are threatened by the suspect. In other words, you can't punch a guy because he calls you an ahole when you ask for his license or shoot a guy who spits on you. HTH.

And to answer “Does it really need to be who was worse”

Yes! Especially if the side that is worse is supposed to be a public servant that you can trust that feeds himself and his family off of tax dollars.

Uhm, yeah, you're talking about something else. I'm talking about "overwhelming force" as in the numbers of men to subdue the suspect. You're talking about police brutality. Maybe I wasn't clear on that but I never said that they should beat the crap out of someone to get them down, which they didn't.
