US Men's National Team (10 Viewers)

Ordinarily I would say managers like Klopp - or any of the other "big names" - would never take this job. Nobody wants to suffer though concacaf qualifying. Between the heat, humidity, playing conditions, referees, someone like Klopp would spontaneously combust.

But, this hire is really just a 2-year hire. 2 years to put together a squad and tactics to get out of the group stage and win a knockout round or 2. No commitment to play any concacaf games (other than a few on the books already).

So, I could see a Klopp or a Poch, or someone similar take the job on - assuming good money is offered.

As I skimmed through the thread, I kept hearing Derek Rae's voice in the back of my head saying: "And Berhalter is shown a red! You can't say that was undeserved!"

Next game for the USMNT is a big one - Canada in September...

Really need the new coach - whoever it will be - in ASAP. There are not going to be a lot of opportunities to really evaluate the squad between now, and when rosters are due in 2026. I hope we don't waste any on interim coaches.

"Our immediate focus is on finding a coach who can maximize our potential as we continue to
prepare for the 2026 World Cup, and we have already begun our
search process."

-Crocker

For all his faults, he did land us talented dual nats at a time when we needed them most. Wouldn't mind if he was retained and spent more time on just that job.

This is allegedly Berhalter's son - Sebastian. (not sure its ever been verified, though):

Have you laughs now. But at 9PM central, I’ll spill the beans. Those snakes. You should have watched your backs.

Tuchel isn’t really being considered is he...given his past with Pulisic?

I've never heard of any issues between the two of them but I doubt they can afford Tuchel anyway and don't think he'd be good for a national team. He'd probably have problems with Weston just because he's such a fitness Nazi and would obviously never tolerate Gio's diva act.

My wife might start taking an interest in this team if they bring in Herve.
From jokes about sneakers and bounce passes to jokes about perfectly starched slim fit white dress shirts.

I love how every manager in this picture is wearing black, except Herve in a leopard print.
Strong “guy at the country club who might be banging my wife” vibes.

US is a fickle fan base but GGG downfall was to never, and I mean never, try something off the wall, different, anything. I get it that at that level you have to make a decision and stick with it but the US is so dynamic in its athlete pool that sometimes you have to adjust. He just wouldn't.

Will the new coach be willing? Can he afford to with so little time/competitions to figure it out before WC?

Next coach better have a good plan to win quick. Not change US soccer from U6 and up. That can come later. Who would even be willing to just come in, win now and ride off into the sunset?

It should be a decent paying job, guaranteed to be the coach of the host nation in the WC. It should attract at least a few out of work coaches.

I am not pleased with the "ideally, we would like to hire by the Sept window" talk.

**** that. Ideally the coach should be hire by early August. Give the new coach some time to watch games and review tapes before having to pick a roster.

This is yet another reason why wasting so much time to fire GGG was dumb. That time could have been used for interviews and extra vetting.

I look at that as simply the CYA if all the non-MLS coaches fall through and they are forced to go the MLS route. However, to your point they should know who choice 1, 2, etc are and how interested they really are. The other thing is if they are going the sponsorship route, lining all those contracts take some time.

What would it take for Nancy or Dolo? Is Klopp or to a lesser extent Tuchel or Poch available? If so, do they have a funding pipeline for that? Is Crocker going to walk? How do they handle the press if the vaunted process of hiring the guy to hire the guy didn’t work? I’m not sure taking a bit of time in that situation is the worst thing.
Nancy would be my choice. He only makes $350k with Columbus. I have no idea if he's interested but surely we can pay him enough that he would be.

The job at hand calls for one of those serial managerial troubleshooters who coach up an African side for a cycle, get sacked or quit because the FA hasn't paid, and reappear six months later on another sideline. We need a man of mystery with loads of experience in the international game and in dealing with federations more mismanaged than the USSF. An away match in Honduras shouldn't be intimidating after visits to Mali and DR Congo.

Dude...it's been a week. Nothing in the last 3-4 days has changed the landscape.

Let’s sssume they’re actually making a play for Klopp. That is a ton of moving pieces. Even if the fed is willing to go up to like $5 million/year, you have to find sponsors to kick in an extra $15 million at least. It can be done, but it’s not something where the plan was already in place. There are multiple deals to be hammered out, even if the interest is there.

So what can a new manager do? He won't do all of these but hopefully some he will try

1) Something other than a version of a 4-3-3...please

2) More importantly than formation, will be tactics. Will new manage continue on the "lets build from the back"elegant approach or will he be more pragmatic given our distribution issues? Will we be a defend first team or continue to try and be a possession team?

3) Different players. This one may be tough as I am unsure GGG was picking the wrong players but new coaches can easily have a different point of view.

4) A new captain? Does new coach want the show it on the field persona like Pulisic or a guy who can drive the locker room like Adams

5) This should come for free but a new coach should add an air of uncertainty for a while. The players should not be so certain that they are both going to make the squad and how they will be used.

What else can we hope for in a short time period?

Lets hope that the last 11 days were not used rewatching GGG training footage to see where he went wrong and that they made up their mind fairly early and started to talk to sponsors if they felt the need.

There is also the outside chance the reverse happened and a sponsor or two reached out to US Soccer in concern of their investment going forward which maybe could have initiated a conversation.

Since beggars can't be choosers, we may have to live with "and please welcome the new State Farm US Men's National Team coach, Jurgen Klopp"

Just to note for your last sentence, we don't need to consider whether a new coach can handle Concacaf away games (I still remember JK's first away game and he was like "WTF is this??" after the game and admitted he needed to do things differently.)

This is a good thing because a big name coach may bring us what we need to play in a more controlled environment of a home WC but not necessarily what a team would need for the craziness of qualifying.

Yes. I sssume the last 11 days were spent establishing that there was an appetite among sponsors to make an aggressive push and at least some willingness among big targets to listen. Now they have to get the lawyers to actually negotiate and draft the deals.

This x1000

We should be looking for a coach on a 2-year deal - only through the 2026 World Cup. That should be the selling point - no pressure on qualifying, and no dealing with concacaf craziness.

If things go well with this hire - I expect we will need a "concacaf" immediately after the WC, and and whoever we hire now, won't want that job, nor will be fit for that job.

Just get Nike to sign the new coach to a lucrative NIL deal... if its a big enough name - it will be worth it for everyone.

Just as a side note - I had never heard the expression "getting grouped" before this summer. :bag:

Lots of discussions around teams not getting out of the group stage at various tournaments through the years, but never heard that expression before this year.

I think 1 and 2 will be the most important and are almost the same thing. No need to stick to a particular formation, someone needs to come in and figure out a plan to maximize the US' best players. Fit the formation/tactics to the team, not the team to the formation/tactics.

Even with only a 2 year deal, I am not sure we will get anyone like Klopp, Poch, Tuechel, Klinsmann. Would any MLS coach leave before the end of the season? Not one that would be worth hiring I would expect. Means no Churundelo.

I've heard Ramos' name thrown about. Not sure I am familiar with the other names I've heard.
