....Hamas officials have said in recent days that the group is reluctant to allow an evacuation of Gaza, arguing that it could mean permanent exile for Palestinians who leave.

“Opening a secure passage to force our people to leave their homeland for permanent death is not something our people and our resistance will agree to,” said Mahmoud Mirdawi, an official with Hamas’s political bureau.

"The Israelis are known to love life. We on the other hand, sacrifice ourselves. We consider our dead to be martyrs. The thing any Palestinian desires the most is to be martyred for the sake of Allah defending his land."

What is the "solution" to this?

Make as many members of Hamas happy as possible?

Literally the funniest thing I've read today....

Russia calls Israeli missile strikes on Syria "gross violation" of international law

From CNN’s Mariya Knight in Atlanta

Russia's foreign ministry on Thursday called Israel's missile strikes on Syria “a gross violation" of international law.
“These actions by the Israeli side constitute a gross violation of the sovereignty of the Syrian Arab Republic and the basic norms of international law,” the ministry said in a statement, adding “the lives of innocent people and the safety of international air traffic were exposed to a real threat.”
The statement said such actions could lead to “extremely dangerous consequences, since they can provoke an armed escalation throughout the region” and shouldn’t be allowed to take place.
One things is for sure. The big winner in all this is Russia.

Yeah, Russia criticizing other countries for gross violation of sovereign states is "great schtick."

just as a fyi tomorrow Hamas has called for a world wide day of Jihad, they are calling it "Al-Aqsa Flood". I received this from work and imo it’s credible because we haven’t received a peep about this until this email was sent out. I’ve been on this board for over 20 years now and would appreciate no screen shots and sharing with my name on it but changing into your own words and sharing with friends and family (especially overseas) is good.
If you’re willing, I’ll take a pm

There was a youtube video of his speech being shared on reddit yesterday but it was blocked before I could watch. I believe he was calling for Arabs in neighboring countries to "spill" their blood in Israel. I'm certain Israel is already on high alert regardless, and his speech could amount to nothing or maybe it will inspire some crazies in other countries like the U.S.

Whatever word you want to use, the end result is, the Israelis are definitely making it very tough on the non-terrorist population of Gaza in an attempt to protect themselves from the terrorist population of Gaza. There has to be a way to let peaceful folks out who want to leave voluntarily.
All 8 of them already left.
I know this is an attempt at a joke (and a decent one), but this whole situation is dependent on what that # is. It is obviously more than 8, but less than the entire population. And how this all shakes out is extremely important.

Hamas has said they don't want anyone leaving because then they would probably not be let back into Gaza. Between that and Egypt slamming the door there is nowhere for them to go. In fact, there are 55 Muslim countries in the world. Not one that I have heard of is offering any refugee space. Not one.

My kids school system and my wife's work both sent out warnings about this. Seems like it's gone pretty wide already.

Hamas doesn't want innocent civilians leaving because they use them as human shields. Honestly, Hamas WANTS innocent Palestinians to die at the hands of Israel because it weakens international support. It's been central to their playbook for 17 years running.

This is what went out to my kid's school system:

Dear MCPS Families and Staff,

This message is to recognize information online in social media and some news outlets reporting on a call from a former leader of Hamas for a “day of rage” on Friday, Oct. 13. Our Office of Systemwide Safety and Emergency Management is in close contact with and working in tandem with our police partners who report no actionable or verifiable threats referencing the Montgomery County community.

As the MCPS Chief Safety Officer, I wish to remind families that our schools are some of the safest places in our community, where all exterior doors are locked and visitors must enter through our visitor management system. Additionally, all security staff have been advised of this information and will maintain a heightened awareness throughout all schools.

Pamela Wheeler-Taylor
MCPS Chief Safety Officer

All in all, I expect some stuff to happen tomorrow. Not well coordinated or planned stuff, but lone wolf stuff will likely occur somewhere.

Same. I feel like I'm tempting fate here, but I'm skeptical that this is going to amount to much. Obviously it is still wise to take precautions.

Edit: Sorry you and your family have to deal with this situation in your schools. I know you have a good head on your shoulders, but still.

I weighed the pros and cons and just went with my gut. This might be the first or second time Ive ever kept her home for concern over an event like this. Normally I don't like to "let them win" but I kept my youngest (HS senior) home today. She only has classes until noon this year and its in a predominately Jewish school/area.

Its not so much that I worry something will occur, its just that shes been doing so well and I dont want her to feel the heightened security and all the chatter.

The Jerusalem Post
@Jerusalem_Post

Benny Gantz's National Unity party leads Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud by 22 seats in Maariv's latest dramatic poll which is its first since the war with Hamas broke out on Saturday.

Support for Likud is tanking. The Maariv survey gives the centrist National Unity 41 seats, up from the 12 it currently holds. Likud drops to just 19 seats from the 32 it currently has.

“Who would you like to be Israel's Prime Minister the day following the war—Benjamin Netanyahu or someone else?" Netanyahu, 21%, someone else, 66%, don’t know, 13%.

Israel has warned the people in northern Gaza to relocate to south Gaza in the next 24 hours. That is kinder than I would be at this point.

How the hell do you relocate a million people in a day?
Gaza is 140 square miles......you have Egypt to the south (Their borders closed I may add).

When you allow murderous terrorists to be your leadership for the last 16 years.......figure it out.

And of course their distinguished leadership has told them not to leave at all......so you know they can use them as human shields.

War is horrible.

I would prefer not to link them but the pics are coming in from the Gaza hospitals and it's going to start tearing some folks apart in their ability to communicate how they think Israel should be moving forward.

I'm trying to be very delicate with my words, I don't want to piss anyone off. It's the hardest part of the conflict for so many people watching from the outside.
On one hand I want Israel to answer with force and I would like to see the US take this opportunity to take out some military targets I have highlighted in countries that back Hamas

BBC journalists who were welcome in those hospitals, broke down of course and they filmed that too.
Nothing good is going to come of any of this IMHO, and it's just getting started

Hamas has absolutely no chance here without surrounding themselves with civilians. Honestly, this time they are probably screwed regardless, because I think the events of this weekend qualitatively changed things. But still, it's the only play in their playbook, and by god they're going to run that play.

Yeah, Russia criticizing other countries for gross violation of sovereign states is "great schtick."

Putin also wants to mediate "peace talks" between Israel and Hamas. It would be comical if not true.

Nothing good is going to come of any of this IMHO, and it's just getting started
Yea, war is hell. Even the Ukrainian conflict hasn't seen the level of devastation that we are going to witness over the next few weeks in Gaza. Sometimes when you poke the bear he bites back, it's going to suck all the way around.
When you send a bunch of armed men across the border to rape women and decapitate infants in their cribs, people tend to roll their eyes when you play the "poor me" card.

In principle, this could all end today if Hamas releases the hostages, lays down their arms, and surrenders. We all know that isn't going to happen, but everything that follows is on these guys.

"The Israelis are known to love life. We on the other hand, sacrifice ourselves. We consider our dead to be martyrs. The thing any Palestinian desires the most is to be martyred for the sake of Allah defending his land."

What is the "solution" to this?
Give them what they want - let them all die martyres.

Once war starts there is never any guarantee what direction it will take.

Russia thought when they invaded they would take over Kiav and Ukraine in a matter of days with little life lost. Going on 2 years with hundreds of thousands of casualties.

Not sure what Hamas was expecting the response to be, but they more inflicted pain and suffering on their own people as well..but they don`t care about that.

All in all, I expect some stuff to happen tomorrow. Not well coordinated or planned stuff, but lone wolf stuff will likely occur somewhere.

We're actually out of town for a wedding on a resort. So, not really dealing with anything. But thank you for the sentiments.

How the hell do you relocate a million people in a day?
How hard is it to travel a few miles?

This isn't a relocation where you go talk to Sally in HR and movers come and pack your stuff up.

This is a get out of the area, now.

There is no HR because the vast majority of people don't work. They live on charity. Because their government puts all available money toward killing Israelis.

The people that do work or run businesses and used to pay 15-20% in taxes now have the privilege of paying 60-70% thanks to Hamas.

I think the primary employer is tunnel construction whereas prior to Hamas rule most areas were economically self sufficient micro economies.

Now after all of this...surely Palestinians would hate Hamas, right????

Nope. Because it turns out the government putting all their effort into killing Jews is actually more important to many of these people than their rapidly increasing child population having things like running water and food.

If you all get an opp to look at Gaza on a map, it was eye opening to me.
-Gaza City has a population somewhere in the 600-750k range and then as you move further South towards Egypt there are less and less densely populated areaa, but we're still talking about 250,000 people crammed into an area and they are expected to receive 3-4x that now. Israel wants all the civilians lining up on Egypt's Border basically until they can go in with the ground troops and it sure sounds like they are going door by door, building by building, whatever it takes., starting in Gaza City

But you should see Gaza on a map, sure looks like they should have some prime property areas along the coast of the Med Sea, hard to believe it looks like it does. I would think they could have a wonderful seaport along there and trade would be so easy with others and they don't seem the least bit interested.
I'm at a loss when I see where it sits on a map

And Egypt has a BIG WALL they built, not many Palestinians are going to be able to cross into Egypt, that's not happening.

Nothing good is going to come of any of this IMHO, and it's just getting started

All the politics/history aside, I think of the movie "A Christmas Story" when they bully Ralphie one too many times and Ralphie goes crazy beating up the bully. I don't mean this to be funny at all, and not any implication of Israel being a victim of bullying. Just Ralphie deciding he is going to fight back and literally loses his mind in his response. After he is pulled off the bully he gathers his thoughts and thinks, "what did I just do"?

Solid analogy although that last part about wondering what they just did? I'm pretty sure the Israeli's won't have questions when this is all wrapped up.

What I don't get is what do they actually expect? That all the Gaza citizens will leave, but Hamas will stay? While this announced invasion will cut down on civilian casualties, it'll also likely ensure Hamas isn't there and if anything that they leave booby traps and IED's everywhere.

How much "infrastructure" could Hamas really have that is of long-term benefit?

Israel has planned and trained for this exact scenario for many years, I'd guarantee it.

They have lived under the threat of a major attack from Gaza for decades now. It is why so many people are critical of Netanyahu and the Israeli intelligence, because they should have seen this coming.

Their response is measured and has been already mapped out.

It reminds me of the Ukrainian response to Russia's invasion. Many citizens were like "yeah, we've been expecting this for years now".

It’s simply a pr move. “Hey, we told them to evacuate”. it’s gonna get much Uglier. Israel is not messing around.

Not endorsing any of these ridiculous news networks but I admire Trey Yingst and his work on the ground, he's in GAZA and actually communicating with Hamas somehow, that seems incredibly dangerous to me, i would not want to be anywhere near the ME right now, you couldn't pay me enough money to do what he does.

And I'm sure there other even more Amazing journalists but this guy seems to go deep into the conflict, unfortunately you gotta tune into the network he reports for, that can be unsettling when he isn't center stage. I would try and maybe find his reports by other means thru social media, I think he's excellent.

-If you keep scrolling you can see the music festival where this unfolded and an arrest of a Palestinian there, stripped and blindfolded as he is arrested, you would never see that here.

Also, their own government told them stay. Because their government wants to kill as many of them a possible.
Probably so -- reprehensible.

And also because there's a long history of Palestinians leaving a place to avoid death and never being allowed to go back to their land or their homes.

Hamas won`t stay alone as they would be totally destroyed in days. Terrorists have to mingle with the rank and file population to survive.

The terror and suffering they have brought on their own people is going to be much worse in the long term than inflicted on Israel.

Also, their own government told them stay. Because their government wants to kill as many of them a possible.
Probably so -- reprehensible.

And also because there's a long history of Palestinians leaving their homes to avoid death and never being allowed to go back to their land or their homes.
And that's what's going to happen here too. Their government should have thought about that before Saturday. When you do stuff like that, your citizens end up having to rebuild from rubble. We did that to German and Japan without apology, and I'm completely okay with Israel pursuing the same course of action.

They “never saw it coming” because these type of extremists take advantage of the naive people by telling them that they have no intention of harming them for the sole purpose of getting you to let your guard down.

They are NOT to be trusted - ever. They don’t have the same morals most humans do.

There are reason why and history and blah blah blah- where we are today, religious extremists are the Aliens in the movie Mars Attacks!!! “We come in peace!!” Then they break out the lasers.

Wipe them from the face of the planet.

Why has Iran in particular been resistant to moving forward with peaceful Israeli relations? Of all the Islamic countries, why are they the ones everyone points to as supporting Hamas?
I mentioned it upthread to someone else but the majority of the ME doesn't even recognize Israeli existence. It's tough to accomplish much of anything when the folks across the table look through you to someone they do acknowledge and talk to them instead of directly to you.
This is correct. And to be clear, back in the early 2000's Israel promised to give most of the West Bank and all of Gaza to make a Palestinian State, if they would simply a. recognize the Jewish state and b. promise to live in peace alongside Israel. Palestinian authorities said no and then implemented suicide bombing s in Israel.
They should do it anyway, unilaterally, imo. They crush the PR war and the absolute worst that happens is nothing else changes vis a vis the way muslims view the Israelies, except they don't have to worry about policing those areas the same way they do today.

I saw some of Trey's reporting on TikTok early on - totally agree. He's IN this mess. He's getting on-the-ground footage like nobody I've seen. With that said, I pray for the guy and his crew. He seems to be one of these people who skirt the line between brazen and foolish at times. I hope it doesn't get him in a bad situation.

Do you honestly believe this? Because I sure don't.

These nations and terrorist groups have been coming after Israel since 1948 no matter what Israel does. They've learned the hard way that they have to monitor everyone, take a firm position and police those areas or Jews will die. That much has been proven over 75 years.

They aren't doing **** for "PR". They are doing all of this for survival.

PR is part of the survival strategy. If Israel became a straight up pariah in the international community, their chances for survival drop significantly. They have to be very careful in how they present themselves.
