RB David Montgomery, DET (1 Viewer)

I didn't watch the game very closely, but did see a couple of runs by Montgomery where he looked just fine.  Could someone who did please elaborate as to how the heck Herbert's 4 carries for 13 yards and NO catches outshined Montgomery "on several runs"?
He looked great. That's a horrible blurb

Doesn't sound like whomever wrote that did either.

David Montgomery rushed 17 times for 46 scoreless yards in the Bears' Thanksgiving win over the Lions, adding three receptions for 28 additional yards.

Not exactly the Thanksgiving feast Montgomery's managers had planned. The Lions permitted just 2.3 yards per carry as Andy Dalton dialed up 39 pass attempts. A brutal day if you are jockeying for season-long playoff position, though Montgomery gets an immediate bounce-back opportunity vs. the Cardinals' run-funnel defense in Week 13.

David Montgomery (shoulder, groin, glute) did not practice Wednesday.

These are all new "injuries" for Montgomery, but the severity of them remains unclear. We'll know more later this week. If Montgomery were to have to sit, Khalil Herbert would take over his role as a one-for-one replacement and be a rock-solid RB2 option against the Packers.

David Montgomery (shoulder/groin/glute) was limited in practice on Thursday.

That's an improvement from yesterday's DNP, but that's ... still a lot of injuries. The Friday report will be telling, and the Bears tend to go with one workhorse back so it'll be curious how that factors in for Chicago for a player who isn't managing with just one issue. Khalil Herbert may be worth a speculative add in some leagues.

David Montgomery missed Thursday's practice with a non-COVID illness.

As did Cole Kmet. Those two skill-player stalwarts were amongst seven players to sit with the supposedly non-coronavirus illness. It goes without saying not to take anything for granted these days, but fantasy managers can still keep Montgomery penciled in for Monday evening's game against the Vikings. His status will be updated on Friday.

Did Montgomery fumble?

I see 2 TDs, 60 + rushing yards, and 2 receptions for 17 yards. That should be 21 points in PPR.

ESPN is recording 19 right now, but I don't see that he fumbled in the box score.

Need all the points possible heading into tonight.

Threw an interception.

The Athletic's Adam Jahns reports the Bears are "are transitioning into a run-heavy team with the outside zone."

Jahns notes that fullback Khari Blasingame led the way in running back drills, and is expected to have a role similar to Kyle Juszczyk in San Francisco. Comparisons to the 49ers may not end there, with the team reportedly installing a similar outside zone run scheme. The change in scheme could ultimately be good for David Montgomery, but it may also open the door for talented second-year back Khalil Herbert to display his one-cut ability. And crucially, if the Bears plan to win with defense and the run game, they may not score very many points this season. Still, Montgomery looks set for a healthy rushing workload.

This guy has been quiet in here. Lots of people talking up Herbert and the rookie Ebner. And there was a blurb that Monty was taking some special teams reps. But he hasn't played in the first two preseason games and is sort of quietly in command of the starting role. Even though his ADP is relatively high. But his peers ranked him pretty solidly:

I like both Monty & Herbert this year. Both are solid values.

Herbert got carted off practice today, and it doesn't sound great. Hopefully its not too bad, when I watched practices, Herbert looked like clearly the best player on the team, with the caveat that Monty and Roquan weren't there.

Fantastic buy opportunity on Montgomery if current owners haven’t heard about Herbert being carted off. Monty could be a true every down workhorse RB1.

That window insta-closed. Herbert back at practice and participating. So I guess it's a Herbert buy op now? :ponder:
Whew!
I only have Montgomery and not Herbert in the only league I roster him, but I’m glad to see Herbert not injured even if it hurts me in fantasy. He’s a nice young talent.

David Montgomery rushed 17 times for 26 yards in the Bears' Week 1 win over the 49ers, adding three receptions for 24 additional yards.

Facing an elite run defense in some of the worst weather conditions you will ever see absent sustained 40-MPH winds, Montgomery had nowhere to go. Worse, Montgomery was actually out-gained 45-28 on the ground by Khalil Herbert even though D-Mont out-carried his sophomore backfield mate 17-9. It was Herbert getting the handles, including a three-yard touchdown run, on the game-deciding drive in the fourth quarter. Perhaps a weather-related fluke but definitely something to be mindful of going forward. Montgomery should probably be regarded as more of a FLEX than RB2 for Week 2 against the Packers.

David Montgomery rushed 15 times for 122 yards in Chicago's Week 2 loss to Green Bay, adding two receptions for 14 yards.

The Bears got away from the run for most of the first half between penalties, sacks, and a massive negative scoreline, but came back to it as Montgomery posted gains of 11, 6, 11, 14, and 28 in Chicago's second two drives of the second half. Montgomery managed four red zone carries despite the chaos around him, but couldn't get to pay dirt. Still, it was an impressive outing for the Chicago run game, and Montgomery will be a worthy RB2/FLEX play against a Texans defense that hasn't exactly done a great job against the run this year.

Where are we at with Monty this week and the next several. Montgomery and Khali Herbert owners would like to know. Questionable with knee/ankle day to day. Perhaps the injury isn't that bad?

Bears coach Matt Eberflus again said Wednesday that David Montgomery (knee, ankle) is "day to day."

The non-update update from the Bears' rookie head coach. Montgomery left early in the Week 3 win over the Texans and never returned, allowing Khalil Herbert to run away with an explosive 20/157/2 rushing day as the week's overall RB1 in fantasy. Herbert is averaging 7.3 YPC on the season and deserves more work. He'd be an RB1 if Montgomery sits against the Giants.

David Montgomery (ankle/knee) did not practice Wednesday.

Montgomery went down with the injuries in the first quarter of Chicago's matchup with the Texans. He was unable to return and the team has since labeled him day to day. There's a chance he's able to suit up for Week 4, but the odds don't look great with a DNP to start the week. Khalil Herbert will draw the start if Montgomery is sidelined. He rushed for 157 yards and two scores on 20 carries while filling in for Montgomery last week. Herbert could push for RB1 status versus the Giants.

David Montgomery (ankle/knee) will not play in Week 4 against the Giants.

Montgomery officially didn't practice at all this week and while Bears coach Matt Eberflus called him "day-to-day," after it happened, it was pretty evident that this wasn't a short-term injury. Khalil Herbert's runway for RB1 this week is now cleared. Montgomery isn't necessarily a lock to play next week with this participation report, so managers will have to monitor his early practice reports for Week 5 for positive signs.

Montgomery (ankle) is listed as active Sunday in Minnesota.

Since making an early departure Week 3 against the Texans, Montgomery has missed one game and was unable to mix into drills until Thursday of Week 5 prep. He ended this week with back-to-back limited practices, seemingly setting himself up to return, and he indeed will be available Sunday. Montgomery's role is uncertain, though, especially after Khalil Herbert impressed in place of the former over the last seven quarters of play. On the season, Montgomery has reeled off 4.5 YPC on his 35 rushes and notched five catches (on six targets) for 38 yards, but he has yet to reach the end zone.

David Montgomery rushed 14 times for 36 yards in Week 9's loss to Miami, adding a catch for eight yards on his only target.

The good news for Montgomery drafters is that he continues to hold off Khalil Herbert in terms of snaps and carries. The bad news is that when your quarterback is as involved as Justin Fields now looks to be in the running game, you enter the Honorary Baltimore Ravens RB Room and lose quite a bit of your yardage and value. But, before you get too down, remember that the ghastly Lions run defense is on tap for Montgomery in Week 10 and that should help get him onto the RB2 line.

David Montgomery rushed nine times for 37 yards, adding one reception for seven yards on one target in the Bears' Week 10 loss to the Lions.

Montgomery was outplayed Khalil Herbert, and not for the first time. Herbert saw 10 carries to Montgomery's nine and had 5.7 yards per carry with Montomgery at 4.1. However, Herbert was ruled out late in the game with a hip injury. If the second-year back misses Week 11, Montgomery will be a solid RB2 play against the Falcons. However, Montomery's grip on the backfield does not look all that strong if Herbert is healthy.

David Montgomery rushed 17 times for 67 yards and a touchdown in the Bears' Week 11 loss to the Falcons, adding three receptions for 54 additional yards.

With Khalil Herbert (hip) on injured reserve, Montgomery handled 20-of-26 backfield touches. He cleared 100 yards from scrimmage for the first time since Week 2. D-Mont's score was a two-yarder where he navigated thick traffic in the third quarter. With Trestan Ebner highly unlikely to force a Herbert-style committee, Montgomery can continue to be treated as a mid-range RB2 with Justin Fields' dual-threat opening up lanes in the running game. The Jets are a difficult Week 12 road trip.

I can't find much news on Khalil Herbert but what I see on MFL is an expected return on Dec 24th (week 16). Do we think Khalil is coming back? If so are we anticipating a return to the old time share like we saw weeks 6-10?

Montgomery 68 rush/7 targets
Herbert 52 rush/2 targets

Do we think Khalil is coming back?

Eberflus expressed optimism in Khalil Herbert's return this season. He's eligible to come off IR entering Week 15. "We feel comfortable with it."
Not eligible to come off IR until week 16 it is 4 games not 4 weeks and Chicago byes week 14.

Back week 16 at the earliest
This is true and was missed by multiple Bears beat writers or all tweeted out the same thing as Courtney.

David Montgomery rushed 14 times for 61 yards and a touchdown in the Bears' Week 13 loss to the Packers, adding four catches for six yards.

Montgomery dominated the Bears' running back touches, out-carrying backup Darrynton Evans 14-3. He was the only Chicago back to see a target and Fields looked his way five times. Montgomery has been a consistent fantasy option despite showing a limited ceiling, having topped 100 rushing yards just once this year. He will return to the RB2 ranks following Chicago's Week 14 bye.

Bears GM Ryan Poles told reporters he wants to keep impending free agent back David Montgomery.

Poles said that there would need to be "common ground" on a contract. Poles said of Montgomery: "I love his mentality, how he plays the game. I told him that to his face. He’s part of the identity that we had this year that kept us competitive." Montgomery turns 26 in June and how his free agency unwinds will determine a lot about both his own and Khalil Herbert's fantasy value in 2023. So far, it seems like the Bears are very interested in bringing him back.

Well I doubt many other teams are going to jumping over themselves to pay Montgomery a ton of money so he'll prob be back in Chicago and ruin things for us Herbert dynasty owners.

Can only see Monty coming back on a team-friendly deal. However this RB FA class has a lot of players entering it. As a Herbert dynasty owner it's starting to feel like Tevin Coleman all over again. "Explosive" guy can't unseat the "meh" starter. Finally goes to a new team and basically sucks

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports the Bears would like to re-sign David Montgomery.

With no deal currently in place, it appears Montgomery will at least get a chance to test the open market. The Bears made a splash earlier this week when they traded away the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft to the Panthers in exchange for a bevy of picks and D.J. Moore. For all the praise they received for a well-executed trade, re-signing Montgomery to a second contract would likely yield the opposite result. Little more than a serviceable back, Montgomery ranked 33rd in YCO/ATT (2.90) last season and managed just three runs of 15+ yards -- the fewest among any back to see 200+ rushing attempts. Third-year running back Khalil Herbert was undoubtedly the better of the two backs last season and comes at a far cheaper price than what would be required to re-sign Montgomery.

Lions signed David Montgomery, formerly of the Bears, to a three-year, $18 million contract, with $11 million in guarantees.

So much for all the talk that Jamaal Williams would return to Detroit, and it's pretty rare to see a running back find $11 million in guarantees on the open market. It's a good fit for the Lions as Montgomery can handle much the same role that Williams did as the between-the-tackles bruiser with red zone upside. He'll also get multiple revenge games per season against the Bears. This probably keeps him in the fantasy RB2 conversation pending whatever our beliefs become about D'Andre Swift's role in 2023. The Lions rushing offense was spectacular at times in 2022 and Montgomery should be able to take full advantage of Ben Johnson's work.
