00's Mixtape Draft (2 Viewers)

Eephus: You and I have very different taste in music. That said, this mix ends very well. T Tank up next. :X
Eephus actually has the least 1 stars for me so far. That Sun Kil Moon song is outstanding.
Agreed on the SKM. But the whole first 2/3 bordered on unlistenable for me.
thanks for listening and sticking with it. I seriously considered going completely pop in my mix because I think eras are defined by what's playing on the radio and blaring from cars and second floor windows, but I didn't want to lose what little hoofcred I have on a mix with Kelly Clarkson, Craig David and Robin Thicke.
I think that's what's wrong with this collection of mixed tapes in general... I sense some fear of including something popular. I'm not sure how many songs are listed total in this draft, but let's say it's 500... the Black Eyed Peas didn't have one of the top 500 songs of this decade? Nobody liked a Nickelback or Taylor Swift song? The American Idol people were huge this decade, weren't they?No big deal, though. I'm finding some stuff I like as I work through these - so far I'm keeping about half of the songs after the first listen through. Acer's been my favorite collection so far.
:coffee:Wasnt sure if anyone would like it. I feel like I have achieved success even if you are the only one

I'll give us time to digest these, but thought I'd throw draft idea I've been throwing around (might have posted in another thread too)

How about a "mystery theme" draft? Kind of a combo of the weird category movie drafts. I thought I'd have people submit themes for a mix tape to me via PM. Whoever signs up for the draft gets randomly assigned one of the submitted themes to make a mix tape for. The person who submitted the idea would know why songs are getting drafted, but the rest of the participants wouldn't. Figured all genres/decades would be open, but it might make us think outside of what we normally draft and could churn out some interesting stuff. Would there be any interest in this??
sounds cool but I would have a problem if I got a theme I was not familiar with

I'm working my way up from the bottom of JML's list. I'm about halfway through Kumerica's mix but I kept getting interrupted at work. This increases my respect for the people who've been able to listen and post impressions already.

Re: the hits/snob issue, I tried to play it down the middle because I have pretty Catholic tastes and that's what I listen to. But based on previous threads, I know others here are different. It's a mix tape draft, not a contest to express the 21st century zeitgeist in 100 minutes of songs. You can't expect people not to pick what they like. Besides, I used "catholic tastes" and "zeitgeist" in a paragraph which ought to increase my snob cred.

So in on this.

Does Mediafire not take m4a files? I notice the handful of m4a's all have big question marks on them....
Are you RARing or ZIPping them?
:goodposting: no idea, I've never used the site before. I just went through my music folders, uploaded songs, created a mixtape folder, added the songs to it and got the link. I have the link, but I'm worried songs won't work.
I think you're better off zipping them first. That way you're only uploading one file instead of 20+.Do your M4A files have DRM?

Uh, #### NO !!!!

You are mostly dealing with music snobs and nerds in here. These aren't meant to be the most popular songs of the decade, but more what you would recommend to others or what you listen to. I'm not going to put some Nickelback on my list just becaue 10million ignorant teenagers listened to them this decade.
Yeah, snobs that like Sean John and 50 Cent. Granted I have very different tastes than a lot but I wouldn't call myself a snob. More just a malcontent bordering on Indie Old Guy. Even though some of my selections by way of Marley brothers may somewhat border on being almost kind of like reggaeton, there is simply no place on this Earth for Sean John. It's an abomination and I get plenty of it and ranchero music (which is cherubic treacle compared to reggaeton) every time one of the extended Mexican families that own and live in a duplex across the street from a house they also own, has a birthday, quinceniera or any other pool party holiday they have. And no I am not stereotyping here, they are from Mexico and there's about 3 generations and 4 seperate families living in the 3 dwellings. My point is, snobbery ends at Sean Paul or John or Luke or whatever, Fiddy and Timberlake.

At least there was no Coldplay or Lady Gaga...

The folder contains 4 m4a files and 1 wma file. I did purchase 2 of the m4a files off of iTunes, but I'm not sure if they were before or after the DRM thing ended, to be honest. How would I tell?At this rate, it probably won't be uploaded til tomorrow or Sunday...

Didn't someone take "Yellow" in the 5th round or so?
Oh yeah...I was in Hollywood when they were on Jimmy Kimmel's outside stage and though I don't like them, that dude is pretty charismatic onstage. Even when they were rehearsing just one song. Too bad he's surrounded by ascot wearing d00shes.
I would've taken "Fix You" if the entire song was like

I'm not really sure what the hell is going on in this post, but you take Justin Timberlake's name out of your dirty whore mouth.

Drafting is for losers.

Oh by the way, I made you guys this awesome mix that I think you're going totally going to love.

I dont know one other song by Sean Paul but I like Get busy. 50 cent is a good rapper and in da club is a good song. And Timberlake is very talented and I have no shame in liking his music.I bet you like the other stuff though. I dont claim to be a snob or nerd. I like all types of music (as I think I showed on my mix).

Got into a bit of a rant after I realized I'd allowed JT, 50 and Sean Paul onto my computer. And some Scotch might be involved. I'd rather have JT in my dirty whore mouth than in my dirty whore ear.

Nice!! Good job with the table scraps, ODR. Surprised you didn't go for the obvious Bravery song, and I love seeing Bob Mould on there. Downloading...

I kinda figured I would but I was a little disappointed. Obviously Flogging Molly and Numb-Encore are great. Wasn't sure what to think about Rancid doing accoustic but I like it better than the album version. They lost me on Indestructible which was a protools mess. Only skimmed the new one, haven't even really heard it. SD is the same song I've neen hearing for almost 20 years, but they are always getting the benedit of the doubt with me since Mommy's Little Monster was the first punk album I ever heard, and still love it. I always get Rise Against and Raised Fist mixed up so I was expecting a different type of song, liked it. Don't like Winehouse. Like Bouncing Souls but this isn't one of my favorites of theirs. Haven't listened to too much Anti Flag, didn't like this offering. Pennywise: see Social Distortion. Haven't cared for Green Day since Dookie, though I have nothing against them. Just lost interest. I really like the Graffin song and am looking into more of his work. Roots song is good too. Don't remember the rest, I went through and erased all the one star songs I've heard the last few days so I don't have them to comment on. I'm sure our tastes are much more similar than this offering might suggest.

Agreed on the SKM. But the whole first 2/3 bordered on unlistenable for me.
thanks for listening and sticking with it.
I like pop music a lot. As a genre it has a lot to offer, a lot in the way of singles/individual songs, more than albums. I like Taylor Swift. "Love Story", "Fifteen", "You Belong With Me", these are well written, well executed pop songs. They didn't fit in with my mix, but I did take some Kylie Minogue, Amy Winehouse, etc... and some mainstream rock like The Killers, Kings of Leon etc...There are some very good mainstream songs from the 00s. You mentioned American Idol. Kelly Clarkson also has some great songs - most notably "Since U Been Gone" but "Never Again", "My Life Would Suck..." etc are good to... she has put out some very good songs. That said, the vast majority of popular music is complete and utter crap. I can see a defense for "I Gotta Feeling". It's catchy as AIDS, it's unavoidable, killer hook, good party song, will be played at weddings and sporting events for decades... Everything else the Black Eyed Peas have done this decade is total ####, with the exeption of "Where is the Love" which is essentially a Justin Timberlake song anyway. If I did a 10 worst of the 00s, the Peas/Fergie could fill half. "My Humps", "Let's Get it Started", Fergilicious", "London Bridge", "Big Girls Don't Cry", "Pump It", "Don't Phunk With My Heart", "Don't Lie".... what a pile of garbage music.American Idol has also been straight downhill since Clarkson won the initial contest. Between Daughtry and David Cook's nickelback light music, Taylor Hicks, Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken and company's total irrelevance there hasn't been much from this group. At best you have Jordin Sparks, Katherine McPhee etc... putting out what sound like 3rd rate Beyonce songs.I've defended Nickelback here before, only because I think there are worse bands out there and I'm not sure how they got to be THE WORST BAND EVER!##!#!!# but they don't have any songs anywhere near the best of the decade, no matter how many spins they got on mainstream rock radio. Thankfully, bands like Pheonix and Kings of Leon are starting to get more and more mainstream attention.Anyway, a lot of the best pop songs of the decade got picked"M.I.A. - Paper PlanesAmerie - 1 ThingBunch of Justin Timberlake songsGnarls Barkley - CrazyBunch of Outkast songsBasement Jaxx - RomeoKylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out of My HeadUsher - yeahIf I was going to complain about a lack of pop music, it would be that there was no Robyn, no Missy Elliot, no Beyonce, no Annie, no Rihanna, no Lady Gaga, no Kanye West, no "Toxic", no Aaliyah. If we did this over again, the pop shtick may be a fun way to go.

I would do this.

Other than being hotter than any other female singer out there, barring her horrifying In Living Color garage sale outfits, I can't understand what makes MIA an international hit. I take that back, I can understand the international. But here? So much better dance music that even I can recognize as such.

But damn she is hot.

I think drafters should blind draw two themes and get to choose one of them. This would reduce the chance of someone getting stuck with a theme that totally doesn't signify to them

Yeah, I was thinking about something like that too. I figured I'd have people send me 1-5 theme ideas, I'd pick out the ones I like the best. Say we have 15 drafters, I'd narrow it down to 30 themes and randomly send each drafter 2 choices to pick from. It would depend on the themes - "Rap songs from the 80s to #### to" might not be in many of our domains, but an "ABC" theme where you have to have 26 songs that start with a different letter is doable. Basically we try to think of interesting enough themes that would still be able to have wide selection that we could pull songs from. We still want to listen to these things as well.

Really? I think American Idiot is one of the top 5-10 albums of the decade. It's certainly their masterpiece.

I've made one of these mixes :pickle:

Honestly haven't even given it a try. Just what I would hear at the gym or mall or whatever. Maybe I'll look into it.

If I was going to complain about a lack of pop music, it would be that there was no Robyn, no Missy Elliot, no Beyonce, no Annie, no Rihanna, no Lady Gaga, no Kanye West, no "Toxic", no Aaliyah. If we did this over again, the pop shtick may be a fun way to go.
Glaring omission on my part. Should have gone with "We Run This" in the wedding blissout portion of my mix, as it was in my actual wedding.

Actually I think that's a really good idea. Those would be intense drafts, and would make some really good pop CDs, IMO.

Other than being hotter than any other female singer out there, barring her horrifying In Living Color garage sale outfits, I can't understand what makes MIA an international hit. I take that back, I can understand the international. But here? So much better dance music that even I can recognize as such.

But damn she is hot.
Here's a hint: it's not dance music. Turn your mind off and your ears on. Maybe smoke some weed or something.

Right in my wheelhouse. I could throw this together in 20 minutes.

Do it !! :o I guess my point being that we probably might want to stay away from genre-specific mixes, or at least limit the # of them. I am sure that we'll be able to come up some interesting stuff.

That's still the link to Hounds of Love from Abrantes' mix. Correct link...-http://www.mediafire.com/?djywzzym42d

When would we start.Ideally people should have time to download and listen to these mixes first

not for a little bit. too many of these and people get burned out on drafting. Figured 3-4 weeks, but thought I'd bring it up now since people are poking around this thread still and see if there was even interest in the idea. I'll post in a couple weeks and start slowing collecting interested drafters and put together the theme ideas.

I was going through this mix track by track, but then my computer quit, so I'll try to summarize. The rap was 50/50 for me. I really liked the Roots and Danger Doom songs, the other couple rap songs, not as much.

A lot of new songs on here I liked as well. Specifically the songs by Burning Airlines, Gutter Twins, Mercury Program and Citizen Cope.

I knew about half the songs before listening (Modest Mouse, Thermals, Pinback, QOTSA, Interpol, Death Cab, BSS, Spoon , etc..). My favourite Pinback song, one of my favourite Thermals songs - I Turn My camera On, Autopilot and I Turn My Camera On all sounded good in the context of the mix.

I haven't listened to the Les Savy Fav or Dismemberment Plan songs in a long time, both are really good.

A couple of the heavier songs would have been better as instrumentals for me, the vocals didn't do anything to improve them IMO.

Overall, I liked that there were a half dozen new songs I liked on here and a few that I hadn't heard in a while as well.
