2018 Song Draft - Post Round 19/20 Picks any time today. (1 Viewer)

I need more music in my life.  Only about 8,900 minutes this year.  Top bands - Chrvches, Radiohead, Talking Heads, Van Halen, and Queen.   Last 2 are because of my daughter's playlist, as are the top songs:  We Will Rock You, HandClap, Jump, Waste a Moment, and Freya.

Since I was talking with @rockaction  about modern rap/what teens listen to, here is a tribute to 2 of the better ones that passed away this year. XXX sampled a Lil Peep song as a tribute to him after Peep died. By the time the song was finished and released, XXX was also dead.

Rd 7 Falling Down by Lil Peep and XXXtentacion
it is a pretty good song.  my daughter (13) played it almost every day in the car for like a month.  She started getting into both of them this year and then they both died.  hit her pretty hard actually.

Thanks for the shout. I listened to that. Then started listening to "Runaway" from Lil Peep and thought "that's just auto-tuned R&B with that sort of dank trap sound." Am I wrong on that? That doesn't even sound like they're rapping. Then I scanned "Broken Smile" and realized, "yeah, this is trap auto-tuned R&B." No surprise teens listen to this by the way. R&B was huge when I was a teen.
Have you heard the Malibu Ken single Acid King?

Round 6:  Foxing - Nearer My God

This record was a grower.  I listened to it when they were coming to town and didn't like it enough to go to the show.  I returned to the album after hearing this song on the radio but their concert had already come and gone.  Their sound has a classic rock grandeur to it that's kind of uncommon nowadays.
I like this song and I like this band when I listen to them. Their album is too long.

Oh wow. Thanks for the shout and the news.

I'd need a lyric sheet. Don't know how I feel about the production. It's very interesting. It's growing on me. Third time coming up. I love Aesop's flow, though he is destined to never break, sadly, but that's his choice.

I am now nearly physically ill.from watching the video, though.

eta* The song, according YouTube comments is about this:

Richard Allan "Ricky" Kasso Jr. (March 29, 1967 – July 7, 1984) murdered his 17-year-old friend Gary Lauwers in Northport, New York, on June 19, 1984. Two other teens, Jimmy Troiano and Albert Quinones, were present at the murder, which took place in the Aztakea Woods of Northport while all four were high on what they believed to be mescaline, but was most likely LSD. The murder became sensational news in New York City and across the nation due to the alleged torture of Lauwers and supposed occult aspects of the murder. The murder took place during a period when there was much public concern over the effects of Satanic and occult content in heavy metal music and in role-playing games. Kasso was wearing an AC/DC T-shirt at the time of his arrest and was a fan of groups such as Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Ozzy Osbourne.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think Aesop is from Northpoint.

Sorry, you know what, I never even watched the video, but now I get the face-melting description

Nah, no sweat. I shut it off/scrolled down as soon as the worms started coming and then went back and watched it of my own volition. I knew it'd be bad as soon as that started happening.

eta* Thanks for the link, actually. That was cool to hear the song.

Rd Seven - The Regrettes - Come Through

Snipe pick.  I believe I saw someone took another of this bands songs in the mid-year.  I like that song, too, but I like this one more.

J
This was the most punk show I saw at Bonnaroo. The lead singer was losing her voice, so it was like a 25 minute set and they were on the tiny tiny stage near the big beer tent. No one else came with me to see them but it was the most intense show, moshing included, of the weekend. Love them and this is probably my favourite song of theirs.

I just picked them in the music draft. I took "Hey Now"

eta* The song "Hot" is intense. I thought they were pleasant power pop, then I heard that song and was reminded of Kim Shattuck of the Muffs,

Yeah there are a lot of kids at school that really huge fans-especially of XXX and think he's a legend that will live on forever. I'm not sure about that but he definitely made a huge impact on a lot of young people in a very short time. That song in particular is meaningful as it's basically the last thing either of them recorded. Peep recorded the chorus as part of a new project and died leaving it unfinished. XXX hooked up with the producer, added a verse and died before it was completed.

This is basically an 80's U2 arena ballad and that's perfectly fine by me.

Round 8 - Arkells - Show Me Don't Tell Me

You said, "Show me, don't tell me
'cause I miss you completely"
This time I ain't bluffing
You're always my number one

the rest of the picks are going to be really hard- a lot of tunes I like- how much depends on my mood in the moment.

another aussie aussie aussie oi oi vey band. was about take more of a drunken 3 chord group of dip####s from melbourne, but will go with these pscyh guys with the titilating name. I like the way the song builds and it's got some radioheady moments (in a good way) with the harmonies and guitar spazz outs.

8- you let my tyres down- tropical #### (f word! so shocking!) storm.

was looking at a Drones tune for this... but it was a remix, which I go back and forth about counting.

eta: also had no idea it was the same dude.

Starting to lose track of my picks.  @El Floppo had it right with the nested quotes so I went back and quoted and cleaned up my picks for an easier reference.

I'm reaching on this selection.  It's probably not worth an 8th round pick, but I'm taking it here anyway cause it's a good Friday song to get your weekend started.  Saw the film "Sorry to Bother You" this summer and this song from the soundtrack jumped out at me.  TGIF, fellas!

Sunshine Frisbee Laserbeam is still available if you want another band with a totally super awesome name!

Edit, didn’t realize only one pick today, let’s go with Brandi

very happy to see Brandi Carlile finally get a ton of recognition with today's grammy's, although I'm not big on the grammy's anyway, I am happy for her.  Although its not her best record imho, it's got some wonderful moments including this nominated tune

R8  The Glands - Possibilities

I commented in the album thread about my love for this band.  Their self-titled album from 2000 is a favorite of mine.  This album is comprised of 23 unreleased/b-sides curated by band members after the lead singer/songwriter died of cancer two years ago.  It's actually quite good and would've been excellent if they had pared it down to an LP.  Still love hearing all of it though.
