*** 2023 NFL Preseason Game Observations Thread *** (1 Viewer)

You shouldn't draft a kicker in the third. College is just a different animal.
No but based on training camp reports he's been very good, not sure what happened today but not ready to think this is more him then how he's been kicking in camp every day. TBD.

Not saying Moody should be given an unrestricted pass, but Daniel Carlson missed three FGs in wk 1 (reg season) of his rookie year and was promptly cut by the Vikings after they traded up to draft him that year. He went on to have a great rookie year after the Raiders claimed him that week, and has been the 2nd best kicker in the NFL since. Hard to judge rookies so early.

this is more him

When it comes to kicking or an isolated movement like that, this is still everything. It could just be "more him," but once you tunnel and live with that "more you," the more difficult it becomes to execute. If he's able to correct it, that's great, but the 49ers can't wait around all season for their kicker to come around just because they spent a third on him. Nor can they afford the roster space to hold on to him if he's not performing. This is either get right quick or it's a waste of a third.

Which they seem pretty good at wasting these days, and that's in addition to their firsts, which they spent on Lance. You can't tell me they were so strong that they could afford to waste a third on a college kicker and three firsts on a project QB. I won't be convinced.

I think he has a good shot of leading the group this year. Fascinating depth chart, especially if Justyn Ross and rookie Rice end up proving they can be factors. Not sure you want any of them for FF this year, as I think they essentially will water each other down.
No world-beaters in this group, but I am encouraged by the depth. Marquez Valdes-Scantling returns as a starter. Kadarius Toney is the real wild card, given his availability, but he may have the highest upside. Richie James is solid, but unspectacular. I think the same could be said for Justin Watson. Skyy Moore and Rashee Rice are brimming with potential, as is Justyn Ross. Nikko Remigio is trying to make the squad as a returner, but he flashed his receiving chops in the Chiefs' exhibition game vs. the Saints. Remigio is unlikely to make the team, given the depth at WR, but he could find himself on the practice squad. I had expectations that Ihmir Smith-Marsette might find a role in the NFL coming out of Iowa, and he has shown flashes in camp. Smith-Marsette spent 2022 on the practice squad, and he could be headed back there again. Jerrion Ealy is a versatile player listed as both a RB and WR. His versatility will make him a difficult cut.

Edit to add: I left out Cornell Powell. He is trying to make the leap from the practice squad, and he appeared to have taken another nice step forward. This will be a tough depth chart to crack, but Powell's added ability on special teams and familiarity with the offense gives him perhaps an edge over other fringe players like Smith-Marsette and Remigio.

Definitely a challenge to sort out for redraft. I do think it will present a nice buying opportunity for dynasty owners who have a favorite in the group as I think production will be pretty spread out. At some point the dust will settle (doubt MVS is there next year) and Kelce cannot last forever.

Jalen Tolbert on Phenom Watch.
Everything and I mean EVERYTHING I’ve read about him this off-season has been glowing

There will not be enough passes to go around for him to be playable in fantasy, imo
I don't think he's getting enough buzz, and if he winds up being the goods, that offense is gonna have some big games

If Daniel Jones plays like that all year, he will be underpaid.
I know it’s only preseason, but I think he’s going to smash this year with his dual threat ability and a greater commitment to the pass game in year 2 under Daboll.

I agree...he has always had talent but that doesn't matter without coaching (especially if it is a stiff like Joe Judge)...Daboll is gonna get the most out of him...Waller, Hyatt and Campbell are nice additions...the Giants do not have an all-world collection of weapons but it is solid when you have an HC who knows what he is doing.

Speaking of QBs looking good. Ridder looks a lot better than Mariota.
See he just threw an interception, was it his fault or bad?
I wouldn't hold it against him much. It was kind of a bang-bang play that probably could have been called PI. Probably could have been a TD if it were London/Pitts and not Scotty Miller.

The long-ish throw to London was nice.

Overall I thought it was a solid drive though.

A couple very ticky-tack roughing the QB calls in the NYG/CAR game. Last one the defender held on to the QB and let go of him standing up. Still a flag.

Did Mingo get much burn? How did he look?
He got a lot of run. 84% of the snaps with the starters. Thielen and Chark were 90% ish. His lone reception was nice- looked like a hot read, got POPPED by the safety but wasn’t phased, bounced off him and got another 5 yards. Pretty impressive.

He also hesitated on a route over the middle possibly a misread between him and Young. That led to an incompletion. He was targeted a 3rd time and looked to have good separation but Young left it short. Should have been a 12-15 yard gain.

Physically he looks the part...as you said that was an impressive play...did not look out of place at all...Carolina does not have many weapons and this kid is in a spot where he could put up some sneaky good #'s as a rookie.
