I am not a doctor but I believe they are the same thing. Maybe a "rupture" is a complete tear and a "tear" is a partial tear. I had this injury and the doctor used both terms when discussing the injury. Mine happened in essentially the same type of movement. a step back and then trying to change direction going forward and felt like someone kicked me in the back of the heel and I went down. Felt where my achilles was supposed to be and it was just mush. Strangely there really wasn't any pain but the pit of my stomach dropped as I realized what probably happened. My guess is that is why Tatum gave the reaction he gave. It was more despair having known he tore his achilles rather than it being physical pain. Just a horrible, horrible injury.

My numbers are probably too high, but a lot of things at this stage are a guess or approximation. IIRC, they are projected at $74M over the cap at the moment. I think they only have 10 guys signed for next year. They are currently $22M over the 2nd apron, but when cap holds, draft picks, and re-signings are factored in, they are likely to be in worse shape than that $22M number. Some of what I have been reading as potential options involving potential moves they could make if they got under the 2nd apron first, and overall it will be really complicated to orchestrate the cap manuevering they are likely going to have to pull off.

There's relatively few nights where the power shifts this much in the NBA. Between Boston and GSW's championship windows seemingly closing, the Mavs and Spurs being able to ramp up for next year, and Giannis going somewhere else; the landscape of the NBA shifted meaningfully last night (nevermind Cleveland having to move something to get under the second apron).
It's going to be a wild offseason.

The Mavs winning the lottery is huge news for the franchise but they are still in an awkward place next season. With the first overall pick, they are going to be above the 1st apron and close enough to the second apron that they will have to shuffle some stuff around just to sign a PG for the tax MLE. The options are pretty slim for $5m as that will probably price them out of Russell (who wouldn't be a bad fit with all their defenders) and Dennis Schroder. Tyus Jones is probably going to be more active in looking for money rather than a place to rehab his value. His bother is probably above that level as well and a terrible fit for a team that will need shooting. I could see Chris Paul taking the role over the money elsewhere. Otherwise, it's a grab bag of guys that have no upside of being the 25th best PG or whatever in the league - Malcolm Brogdon, Spencer Dinwiddie (I assume he'll be back on a minimum), Mote Morris, Cam Payne...
And this brings me to a question for the peanut gallery - what are the odds that Nico Harrison bucks common sense again and goes after Dylan Harper as it is a position of need, rather than a PF on a team full of bigs?

I think at minimum it would require Adam Silver, every owner and probably most if not all GMs and similar team executives to all be in on team RICO.

I've told the story here before, but I too didn't have any pain when I ruptured mine playing hoops. Just felt like someone threw a basketball at me and hit me in the calf. I even turned around to see if that's what had happened.

I don't think the lottery is rigged, but you have to wonder that the extremely rare outcomes typically happen when there is a generational player available, a team can get a local player, or there's some other situation that can be viewed as pay back by the league. Ewing, LeBron, Derrick Rose, Anthony Davis, Zion, now Flagg come to mind. It also seems that when the draft is pretty meh without a clear top option, that's when the teams with the highest probability typically get the top spot.

I asked the guy guarding me if he accidentally kicked my heel. He said he didn't touch me and my stomach sank. Then I felt the mush and new it was bad.
I don't think a 1st or 2nd degree strain (tear) makes you go down like that. It's a pretty distinct reaction to the complete rupture of the tendon. Couple that with Tatum's reaction on the ground and in the wheel chair and I think it's fairly obvious what happened.

I'm not really that into basketball but grew up in New England cheering for the Celtics back when I loved all sports. I grew up with Bird, McHale, Robert Parish, DJ, Danny Ainge, and we'll throw Walton in there for good measure. What a bummer about Tatum.

The Tatum injury has scared me away from wanting to push in a lot of chips for Giannis and his max contract ... not just Tatum, but also the recent injuries to other max contracts, Kyrie and Dame; they add to the fright. I have not forgotten Giannis' calf issues in the playoffs the previous season either.
Also , I am quickly warming up to the idea of a three guard rotation of Fox-Castle-Harper. Then go grab Kornet and present a 3-2 (3 guards, 2 Bigs) lineup to match up what the thunder are cooking.
That leaves Vassell, Keldon, Barnes, Sochan, and 15 min/game CP3 to round out the rotation. And Blake Wesley (still have hopes he can develop into rotational level guy) and the #14 pick overall to round out the team. Not bad. Still leaves us with a nice cache of draft capital and an easy to manage salary structure.

That 2028 Boston swap is looking very sexy right now, though it is top-1 protected.

Knicks have one of the most loyal fan bases in the league. They fill the Garden every game even during the lien years.

I understand why, despite my dislike of both teams, it's hard not to root for Jalen Brunson, he works hard and I think most fans appreciate him.
I don't dislike Tatum and my stomach churned watching that happen last night
But if you ask around South Florida, think most folks would prefer the Knicks and that's crazy if you understand the history between Heat-Knicks going back to the 90s
And the Knicks are on the road so I messed that up, for some reason i was thinking the Knicks were having a closeout game at home on Wed, that couldn't happen until Game 6 which I don't see how the Boston Celtics manage to win Game 5 if Tatum is not only OUT but also has a long term injury, that would take a huge mental tool on everyone.
