Easy call for Miami. He's not a very good player anymore. Probably a #3 CB at this stage.Xavien Howard released by the Dolphins.

I'm seeing a 7.4 mill dead cap hit, but either way, it would have cost a lot more to keep him, and he's very replaceable. He will be a 15.7 mill dead cap hit--on NEXT year's cap.Easy call for Miami. He's not a very good player anymore. Probably a #3 CB at this stage.
That's not great. That's a really good starting guard.
7.4 this yearI'm seeing a 7.4 mill dead cap hit, but either way, it would have cost a lot more to keep him, and he's very replaceable.
I noticed that Boomer Esiason recently weighed in, projecting Goff to join the $50M per club. I initially thought it was a bad move, that they'd cleared the necessary cap space to lock him down. That along with Holmes saying they weren't going to be aggressive in FA & Ben Johnson leaving. But with Johnson returning & if Goff's deal is an extension, I consider them the favorite to win the SB.@markrc99
Just going to say with the cap going up to $255m I will no longer die on the hill that Goff won’t get what Lamar, Hurts, Burrow or Herbert got last off-season.
I’ll still say he won’t get the same percentage of cap money as them, but he can now come 3% less on the cap and be on their scale and I think that’s possible.

As many astute analysts have pointed out, the dead cap is just an accounting construct. What GMs/owners really care about his actual money paid out. Within limits of course, any GM worth his salt can be creative to pay players that they truly want to pay and jettison those that they don't want to pay.7.4 this yearI'm seeing a 7.4 mill dead cap hit, but either way, it would have cost a lot more to keep him, and he's very replaceable.

Dead cap isn't the relevant figure to teams deciding whether or not to keep a player like Howard. Dead cap is spilled milk. The milk still in the bottle that they use to gauge such a player's ongoing relative value to the team is *cap savings.*
Great career with Miami. 29 Interceptions, 4 defensive TDs. One of the few trade-ups (4 slots in round 2) that has worked out for Grier. He was more of a ball-hawk than a shut-down corner. In the video below of all his INTs, he was fast early in his career. His savvy should help a team.Xavien Howard released by the Dolphins.
For sure. The Sunk Cost fallacy.Dead cap isn't the relevant figure to teams deciding whether or not to keep a player like Howard. Dead cap is spilled milk. The milk still in the bottle that they use to gauge such a player's ongoing relative value to the team is *cap savings.*
Not surprised if that’s true given that none of the 2023 tags of Barkley/Jacobs/Pollard worked out as hoped. Seems like teams don’t want to pay $12 million a year for an RB, and it’s hard to blame them. So, Shefter says no tags to be used on RBs. Henry, Barkley, Jacobs, Pollard, Ekeler all will UFAs. Wild stuff.

I hear you - just the way the position has evolved. Spending 5.5% of the cap doesn’t sound like a lot, but so many teams have successfully filled the RB position with cheap labor that they would rather use that excess capital on a premium position. Not surprised if that’s true given that none of the 2023 tags of Barkley/Jacobs/Pollard worked out as hoped. I’m not even really arguing against it but it’s just wild that in a league with a $255M cap, teams are balking at spending 5.5% of it on some of the top RBs in the league. I definitely get it, was one of the early ones advocating for going cheap at RB. And especially in a tag situation where it all hits at once. Still wild to see.
Like I’m a Washington fan and we have a ton of space and could go get Barkley on a 3 year deal no problem and steal him from a rival to boot. Part of me wants to do that. Would help whatever QB we draft and could even lighten his load to keep him fresh with Robinson.
Why is that?Lots of big names at RB on the market. Some of these dynasty stashes are going to disappoint some very soon.

Raiders have said they plan to try their best to resign Jacobs. And Saquon has stated he wants to be a Giant. But money talks.I can't see the Raiders not signing Jacobs or the Giants not signing Barkley, but I suppose anything is possible. I don't think either is going find the market friendly to them as much as they hope.
Agreed - all it probably takes is another team to offer slightly more than their incumbents. After last season's franchising issues, I don't see either guy offering their teams a hometown discount.Raiders have said they plan to try their best to resign Jacobs. Not all contenders, but the Texans, Ravens, Chargers, Cowboys, Eagles and Giants may have wide open spots if they don't sign their incumbents, plus perhaps teams like the Vikings if they want an upgrade. That's a lot of demand when you factor in a weakish RB rookie class. Just a matter of the price tag.Agreed - all it probably takes is another team to offer slightly more than their incumbents. Especially if that team is a legit contender...$ and a chance for a title is a nice combo.
I can’t imagine an NFL player who cares at all about winning…..signing with the Giants. Dude should just move on to a real franchise.Raiders have said they plan to try their best to resign Jacobs. I wouldn’t want to play for a franchise dumb enough to draft a RB with the #2 overall pickI can’t imagine an NFL player who cares at all about winning…..signing with the Giants. I think Gabe Davis could get as much, if not more. The NFL community seems to like his skill set more than the fantasy community does.My guess right now, no lock or anything, is that Marquise Brown of all people is going to land the best contract of any WR that switches teams.
Seeing most legit FA ranking spots putting Brown in the 20'sh range and Gabe way down the list and that makes total sense to me for Brown because he's already had two teams spend first round picks on him. The NFL covets speed and seems to really like his skill set, would be surprised if does not beat Gabe.I think Gabe Davis could get as much, if not more. Could be - Brown may be this year’s big overpay at the position and maybe Davis the bargain when all is said and done.Seeing most legit FA ranking spots putting Brown in the 20'sh range and Gabe way down the list and that makes total sense to me for Brown because he's already had two teams spend first round picks on him. From a skill position standpoint, it’s really only RBs that have a lot of significance. WRs are also largely drained outside of a few second tier guys, with Higgins and Evans locked up. And QB is mainly about Cousins, with Baker and Russell of lesser fantasy interest.Free Agent TE market is going to be barren, Hunter Henry or Noah Fant may be the top of the class because....
Schultz resigned with Texans for an amount I'm sure is less but they are reporting as 3/36, $23.5 GTD.
Bad year to need a TE.
Yep, said about that same thing in one of the first posts in this thread. It doesn't surprise me as I think Madibuike is a great player from my recollection looking at him as a rookie prospect. Another player I wanted the Vikings to take but didn't.Ravens giving Madibuike a huge extension was a surprise, and a pretty big risk in my opinion, as he was a bit of a 1-year wonder, and now has a new DC.
Fantasy wise, I think that deal, and the retention of Stanley/Moses, makes it unlikely the Ravens are breaking the bank for a RB. More likely they either draft a guy, or sign a cheaper FA as opposed to someone like Henry or Jacobs. Maybe Ekeler comes cheap after last year? But more likely someone in the Moss/Dillon range. Probably not bad news for Keaton Mitchell owners.
I also liked him as a prospect and had him as a mid 2nd instead of a mid 3rd back in 2020, but I always worry about guys who don't really breakout until their contract years, and the Ravens and Steelers especially tend to have a history of those guys, who they then often let walk, and they bust for other teams. When a guy with 8.5 career sacks suddenly puts up 13 his contract year, I get real nervous about paying that guy.It doesn't surprise me as I think Madibuike is a great player from my recollection looking at him as a rookie prospect. So I don't see him as a 1 year wonder so much as him being a player where things finally lined up well for him.
It's not that easy for a DT to put up numbers. Plenty of them who have very good seasons don't have numbers to along with that.
