2024 Summer of Soccer - Euro's, Copa America, Olympics, WCQing (1 Viewer)

Fun little bit of Trivia I ran across:

The last team Italy beat in the World Cup was the opening match of the 2014 World Cup a 2-1 win against England.

What soccer plays, known world wide, are named after players?

He Baggioed it
The Ronaldihno
A Penenka
Cryuff Turn

There must be others..

Italy v Switzerland
Germany v Denmark.

Interesting geographical twist: assuming there’s a road through the Alps (I honestly don’t know), you could drive through all four without crossing another border.
:nerd:

Or maybe take a train.
Kind of like driving from El Paso to DC and only touching four states. Always thought that was wild
wait no how
Texas -> Arkansas -> Tennessee -> Virginia

Very surprised they aren't stopping this with the lightning. They'd have delayed a long time ago in the US.

LOL - literally as I hit save.

I absolutely hate that they will take away a goal in that situation. His heel is an inch offside right in front of goal. Its just stupid to limit offense in that manner in a sport with so little scoring.

To which the counterpoint is do you allow a heel? A foot? A foot as in the distance? A yard? At what point do you say it is not offside, and once you've decided that, someone will still be a heel ahead from that point on occasions. It's no different from a WR's toe being on the sidelines and it is incomplete.

Unless, of course, you are advocating for the abolition of the offside rule, in which case lol

Offsides where the ball is passed from inside the penalty area shouldn't be a thing. Poke holes.

Peter Schmeichel has to be the whiniest, braggiest, douchiest talking head out there. Almost makes Alexi look like a normal person.

His obvious homerism here. First of complaining about the offside saying how can the VAR assistant possibly tell it was offsides, and saying it's "too much power" for Stu Atwell to have to make a game changing call there. Isn't offsides automatically done by the computer? It's not like Atwell is looking at a still frame from the video feed like it was 5 years ago.

Then he SOMEHOW is trying to argue that the ensuing handball that led to the PK wasn't a handball. I'm trying to figure out how he could even dream that up, as it was a patently obvious handball/PK.

And of course, in the middle of all that, he never passes on an opportunity to pat himself on the back, bragging about how he "called" Musiala being a person to watch for (gee way to go out on a limb there). Seems like the guy never misses out on an opportunity to brag about how he called the results of a game that was probably one of 5 picks he made with the rest incorrect.

Dude really grinds my gears.

This has always been my stance. I get the strategy aspect of playing an offside trap further up the field. But waiving off goals when someone 7 yards from the goal passes to someone 2 yards from the goal just seems nuts to me.

There must be others..
The Maradonna
The Ronaldo chop

And those are what exactly?
Hard to describe in word....

Ronaldo chop is a quick chop by stepping over and tap it the other direction with back foot - all on the fly in attack.

Maradona is a bit fancier. "Step on top of ball while going over and starting a spin. While backwards, pull back and turn forward again. Or something like that.
Could also be throwing the ball in the goal with your hand while attempting a header....
