2024 Summer of Soccer - Euro's, Copa America, Olympics, WCQing (3 Viewers)

I'm going to laugh if L/L is how we advance, and extenuating circumstances suddenly matter again.

That would be pretty sweet after listening for four days about how how extenuating circumstances, for example a rabbit punch in the middle of the field resulting in a red card, are irrelevant -- and going out of the group is going out of the group and 100% on the coach.

Are we just ranked much higher than we should be?
yes. It has always been that way, even after they fixed the formula many years ago.

Note that anything from >10ish to 35ish (maybe even higher) is interchangeable these days.

Many people prefer the ELO rankings, but there is no perfect formula for this stuff.

Some of the rankings are just crap.

ETA: the first good rankings I looked up have Uruguay at #6 and the US at #30. That's much closer to right.
note that the ELO rankings you are talking about are updated daily, where as FIFA only updates monthly.

As such even in the FIFA rankings the US are going to be much lower than 11 once every thing shakes out of the 2 tournaments. But they won't be close to 30 even saying that. If they lose tonight, they will probably end up 18-22ish

I think that is too large a spread to consider them "interchangeable"

Just off the top of my head - Germany 10 - Scotland 35 - and the recent 5-1 score shows that they are not in the same league.

And I would not consider US and Germany to be in a similar bracket.

I do think there are definite tiers to the rankings - just not that broad.

I agree.

I did say greater than 10 though. The group from 11-15 is only marginally better than the group from 25-30ish.

And my wording was poor. When I said interchangeable, I was more talking about the odds of winning a game would be fairly close.

I can't get past the feeling the US may play well tonight, grab the 3 points and still not advance.
The odds on this are really low. I'm a lot more worried we get trucked by a very good, in form, team.
Hopefully Darwin has two left feet tonight
Why should tonight be any different?
Don’t make me ask when Italy plays….
That one hurt, GB.

Et tu, Brute?

Is everyone aware that Pepe is 41 or are there still a few people who are unfamiliar with his career?

𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙮𝙚𝙧 𝙞𝙣 𝙁𝙤𝙘𝙪𝙨: 𝙋𝙚𝙥𝙚 - Pepe is older than one-third of the nations at Euro 2024.
Who knew being a massive **** on the pitch was the key to longevity
So many words can sub in for ****. I approve.

Not to say it excuses what's going on with USMNT, but when you see what's happened with teams like England and Portugal and the quality of their lineups and inability to score against inferior teams, it's just a reminder that it's not a unique thing.
