2024 Summer of Soccer - Euro's, Copa America, Olympics, WCQing (7 Viewers)

I walked from my house to my car today in almost the exact same weather as the game tonight and I almost died. To run in this must be brutally hard.

For those wondering about the pitch situation at MetLife Stadium, Conmebol installed the grass over artificial turf on June 20 for the matches on June 25, June 27 & July 9.

The grass has not been replaced since initially laid during the tournament's group stage.
The field looks atrocious.

Thankfully FIFA are not going top be cheap like CONMEBOL. They are going to rip out the fake stuff entirely and lay the grass months before the World Cup starts. After the WC they will pay to have the fake crap put back in.

Canada started so well for 20 minutes and then literally crapped themselves. Leyrea was awful. Larin and David, not much better. Davies, invisible. Johnston, kone and the kid were best players on the field for Canada... At least until the ball sniffed the final third (after those promising first 20 mins)... Then all bets were off for everybody. Awful.

And the field. Christ.

But big crush on DePaul who has been amazing all copa- on both sides of the ball.

Youth is a hell of a thing.

I went for a short walk around 7:00 tonight. The heat index was still 103 and I had a moment where the air felt so hot just breathing it that I wondered if I'd made a mistake.

@OptaJoe
The only two players across the last two EURO/World Cup tournaments with 15+ chances created, 15+ shots and 15+ dribbles:

2022 World Cup - Lionel Messi
EURO 2024 - Lamine Yamal

I went from thinking that HAS to be off-side - to, holy crap - thats not even close to off-side.
it would have taken an IQ of 12000 but the defender would have been better to keep his momentum and step over the end line instead of turning around and putting Messi onside.
That would not be allowed and he would still be keeping everyone onside. He had to try and get upfield.

It works for the attacker since it makes him "passive" in the play and not affecting it.

And technically leaving and reentering the field without permission is a booking.

thanks, I never knew this was a rule but it does make some good sense.

90 minutes on my bike, "feels like" 103, average HR 137. I'm old and not a finely tuned athlete. They should be able to handle a little running around. 😝

I'm in NYC. It's not super hot- mid to high 80s- but it's humid as hell... like getting slapped in the face with a warm wet fish when you walk outside. I've been on citibikes all day going back and forth to the ER for my wife...drenched every time.

Daughter and I played an hour of tennis on sunday- a little hotter (90s) and a little less humid. I melted into a tiny green globule

I think that one set a record for fouls and cards, including the infamous Nigel deJong flying chest-kick against Alonso which would have been a certain red on any other day.
I wasn't necessarily even pulling for Spain at the time, but I'm still mad about that. Not as mad as I am about Hugh Dallas not knowing what a hand ball was (22 years ago, you'd think I could let go), but close. Obscene. Thank god Spain won.

The same Hugh Dallas who, here, is more well known for having appeared on Family Fortunes (Feud) than any refereeing exploits

How is your wife? Hope she is getting better!

Yikes - thought it was a silly point when Donovan brought up the number of PL players - but kind of worried for Darke when he brought the same point up 30 seconds later...

That's a close one - I'm too biased here to be listened to but I think it's right. Wouldn't be too upset if Dutch had gotten the PK in that scenario.

Here is the problem:

If the defender clears the ball and his follow through kicks Kane: PK
Kane shoots the ball and his follow through kicks the defender: PK

What is the defender supposed to do?

Plus he got the shot off, since when do they give a PK after a clean shot?

Never a PK.

What's your reasoning? I think the studs showing and it being almost as much his contact as Kane's that decided it.

And nice penalty by Kane.
Kane kicks him, the studs weren't thrown into Kane.
Studs were down. Typical go for a block and the follow through gets him.

I don't think if Dumfries had gotten the ball and then Kane's foot that it would have been given. I'm guessing of course but it's what I think.
