2024 Summer of Soccer - Euro's, Copa America, Olympics, WCQing (4 Viewers)

I know others mentioned this but I keep thinking back to the 2006 game with Italy. We were a man down against the best team in the world and held our own and at times looked like better team. The level of talent difference was so high but that team played so hard (though they didn’t get out of group either).
I was at that match. SOOOOOOO emotional. And the party in Kiaserslautern was dope afterwards too. Took the last train out of there at like 2:00 AM after partying with people from everywhere.

Then we got stomped by Ghana after Papa Reyna ****ed up.

I try to forget that (or the even worse match against the Czechs)
If I remember right, we gave up a goal from like 40 meters out.
Oh I was at that one too. It was a straight up *** kicking. Jan Koller was a man among boys. The USMNT really seemed like they had never played against a player like him before, probably because they hadn't.

I've somewhat defended GGG in the past and I was ok they retained him. I still don't think he's horrible and I do think this squad is soft and a tad overrated. But, I'm completely fine if they want to move on after COPA (no matter how it plays out). I think now would be the time to do it - but who do they get? I want somebody who plays attacking, relentless football.
Klopp. I mean, you gotta ask, right?

For realz. Someone throw some money at the man, please.

I always assumed this was why he decided to hang it up with Liverpool.

One thing about VAR that is clearly a mess in COPA is the idea that the ref is going to explain what happened. I swear, every single time they have tried, they either forgot to turn on the mike or the connection was not made to the speakers or something else went wrong.

The poor announcers are always like "ahhhhh...we can't hear what he said"
Or it's done in Spanish...

You beat me to it. A lot needs to change with this process. They also should only allow captains to approach the ref much like the Euros. The way some of these Copa teams play I almost fear for the ref's livelihood.
Sad thing is the law already says this. At least the Euros are finally trying to enforce it. Start booking anyone that is not the captain.

I've said it in the other soccer threads, saw a video where a ref was surrounded and he took the red out of his pocket and held it at his side. Didn't show it to anyone, but the threat alone was enough to quiet everyone. More of this.

Pulisic continues to be GGG's biggest fan. I don't know how much sway he has with US Soccer but if they are hesitant to sack GGG, then Pulisic may be able to push them over the edge to keep him.

What is Puli gonna do if they sack him? Refuse to play? CALL HIS BLUFF! AND GET DER KLOPPSTER
Klopp and Pulisic I think like each other. I think Puli would get over GGG getting sacked quite easily if a miracle happened and they landed Klopp.

Steal Bielsa from Uruguay. I am LOLing at people who think Uruguay will take their foot off the gas Monday. They are not familiar with his work.
I think some may be confusing rotating players and assuming the players coming in are of low quality. They still have some very strong bench players.

Suarez can barely run any more but give him a one nano second shot window and the onion bag will be a bulging.

Yeah no one was like Koller. He was a beast and a physical freak.

Soccer broadcasts in the US need a superstar. A Barkley, a Uecker, a Madden. Someone actually funny.

The formula of just bringing on the most well known former US player isn't working. Cobi Clint and Landon are all clearly really nice guys, but they gotta find someone with personality. Lalas is basically the lead singer from Spin Doctors doing a Cris Collinsworth impression. It's tragic.

They need a salty old timer or something.

:lmao: at the Spin Doctors reference. What a sh*tty band.

I think they were supposed to do this in the MLS too but it has been executed poorly.

They all seem to love him, but these guys need a coach, not a friend.
Going to go out on a limb and guessing that what they want is a coach, not a friend. They aren't 13 year old girls.
I am not convinced.

I also think the coach needs to be somewhat isolated from the players to make dispassionate decisions - if the coach is there at the pleasure of the players, then that is not in the best interests of the team.

I wonder if the mic is wired to the stadium sound system, but not the TV audio.

But, you would think the stadium mics would pick up any of that audio - so,

Italy v Switzerland
Germany v Denmark.

Interesting geographical twist: assuming there’s a road through the Alps (I honestly don’t know), you could drive through all four without crossing another border.
:nerd:

Or maybe take a train.

Kind of like driving from El Paso to DC and only touching four states. Always thought that was wild

That's crazy. Made me go look.

You can also go from San Francisco to DC and only touch 7.

Yuck.
Do I actually have to touch them?
