2025 Year-end Song Draft - We've Started, join in and pick a song or twenty four (3 Viewers)

With so many good songs left, it's getting harder to pick one for the playlist. Can't believe we haven't had anything yet from

23. The Black Keys - Babygirl

There were two that I had to double check twice yesterday because I didn't see them on the list. Black Keys were one and the other was...

23.kp: LORDE - WHAT WAS THAT

We are probably just trying too hard to look cool for each other instead of taking music we like to listen to, right @Ilov80s ? ;) I thought the album was a very good return to form.

23.dq - Leon Bridges & Norah Jones - This Christmas I’m Coming Home

I think I’m going to close things out with a couple of Christmas songs.

23. BAMBARA — Loretta
I was holding off on picking from this album. I originally heard about it from a post by @Eephus and hoped he’d pick a song but, alas, it’s the last day so that probably isn’t happening.

Apparently it was my ninth most listened to album of the year. I had it on repeat for a while. The album loosely tells a story about a woman who is duped into handling poisonous snakes by a religious charlatan. Or maybe it was all a dream. I never quite figured that all out.

I probably should have taken this about 15 rounds ago but the song actually came out late last year and the album came out early in the year and I somewhat forgot about it but it absolutely rips.

22.NV - Anxious - Counting Sheep

We focus a lot on new songs in thread, but I still like albums. Question for the masses as I listen to the playlist:

Do your picks represent favorite albums as well, or more just individual songs you like?
What are people's top 5-10 albums? (If you listen that way?)

Mine don't line up perfectly and I focus more on songs these days. I've also been working on a fairly comprehensive Pop-Punk/emo/screamo/post-hardcore songs playlist the back half of the year and listened to mostly Bonnaroo bands the first half of the year, so all that said my favourite albums probably are:

Arms Length
Hotline TNT (not on Spotify)
Turnstile
Hot Mulligan
Nourished by Time
Craig Finn
Hayley Williams
Courting (EP)
caroline

I'm probably missing a couple

I mostly listen to albums and my picks generally reflect that. Some of my favorites (not necessarily in order):

Geese -- Getting Killed
Racing Mount Pleasant -- Racing Mount Pleasant
Home Is Where -- Hunting Season
David Lowery -- Fathers, Sons and Brothers
Squid -- Cowards
Not for Radio -- Melt
Legss -- Unreal
caroline - caroline 2

Many others but that's a start.

I’m mostly albums. In thinking through my picks, my starting point was going through my iTunes Library for new albums that I added to it during the year, and picking my favorite songs from those. I drafted a few one-off singles (like my RAYE and Chappel Roan picks), but otherwise mostly stuck with songs from albums in the library. I noted for stuff like LUX that I think album is better than any one song.

My quick list (picked songs from each of these):
  1. Rosalia - LUX
  2. Pulp - More
  3. Mavis Staples - Sad and Beautiful World
  4. Abel Selaocoe - Hymns of Bantu
  5. Bill Fox - Resonance

Little of both but I’ll have to think about my favorite albums and get back to you

Round 23

FAEDA - South Paw 🎸

FAEDA is a four-piece Indie Rock band from from Thurso in the Scottish Highlands, and are supposed to be a killer act to see live.

After listening to the three singles they have released to date, I think the raving I keep seeing online about them is legitimate.

This was their second single and came out in late October. They were previously known as "Forgetting The Future" but had to change the band name to FAEDA in September due to legal issues they couldn't resolve.

I'm pretty much exclusively an album guy, my picks showcased albums I like. Some of my favs from this year are:

Car Seat Headrest - The Scholars
Telethon - Suburban Electric
Turnstile - NEVER ENOUGH
PUP - Who Will Look After The Dogs?
Lambrini Girls - Who Let The Dogs Out
Snocaps - s/t
Dead Bars - All Dead Bars Go To Heaven
Viagra Boys - viagr aboys
Death by Unga Bunga - Raw Muscular Power
Wet Leg - moisturizer
Horsegirl - Phonetics On and On
Laura Jane Grace : WWIII Revisited
Lucius - Lucius
Blondshell - If You Asked For A Picture
Spiritual Cramp - RUDE
Julien and Torres - Send a Prayer My Way
Lucy Dacus - Forever is a Feeling

ETA: I had a hard time narrowing that down to just 10. I'm going to have an even harder time ranking them for a year-end list.

I've listened to a couple podcasts now, and I will say the praise heaped on Geese and Rosalia was off the charts. I was getting Wyld Stallyns, uniting the world through music vibes from those podcasts. I moved those to the top of the queue and will add a few others, thanks.

I didn't listen to hardly any new music this year until about a week ago. Of my original picks, there were just 4 that I knew and loved the albums for:

Lord Huron
Aesop Rock x2
Between the Buried and Me

Of the stuff that I listened to the last week a few albums stood out from my picks:

Erika de Casier
Lorde
Wednesday
Ash Tuesday
*all 4 of those I thought were good start to finish

Albums that were close, but had a couple songs I didn't click with were the Caroline and Smerz, but both I would say are still worth a listen.

I have about 20 albums added to the queue from this year to explore during the next couple weeks and will add more as I listen to the playlist from this adventure.

24.dq - The Pretty Reckless - Where Are You Christmas?

Cindy Lou Who all grown up. YouTube video opens with Taylor Momsen as a kid on Leno. Song transitions from her as a kid to now. Hits the nostalgia points.

That closes me out. Thanks for organizing and all of the new tunes to explore.

Round 24

Rikas - We Had A Date

German Indie Pop band from Stuttgard, Germany with a fun jangly tune. This is the second version they have done of this song. The original version was released in 2018.

About the band:

"Rikas is a German indie-pop band hailing from Sturrgart, Germany, known for their sunny, surf-rock-infused sound that often gets compared to Southern California bands like The Beach Boys. They formed in Stuttgart, with members Ferdinand, Sam, Chris, and Sascha, and have gained popularity across Europe with their energetic live shows and breezy tunes."

24. Geese -- You Get What You Give (New Radicals cover)

My last pick isn't on Spotify. It's only recorded from a live radio show on YouTube. You have to skip to the 6:52 mark in the video below if you'd like to listen to it.

This is one of those rare times when a band covers a great song and improves it. They do that my slowing down the beginning which provides the climax so much more punch. Cameron absolutely nails the vocals in the climax too. They also cut the rappy ending which was a good decision.

I found a YouTube clip from the same live broadcast with just You Get What You Give on it.

I had a different song from the album on my shortlist

I listened today and thought the Wet Leg album was good. The album cover not so much, though. I also liked the Horsegirl album, and I could see that one growing a bit on re-listens.

We will see how long I last, but my music resolutions for 2026 will be to increase my album count on Spotify and decrease my listening age. Not giving up my 70s rock and prog, so that means I have to get hipper to what new music you kids are listening to.

24.pip When Your Heart Is Broken -- Bob Mould

Speaking of Mould, he continued his run of excellent albums since 2012 with Here We Go Crazy. When Your Heart Is Broken shows him to continue to be a purveyor of intense but melodic rock.

Is this the end?

Rd 23
Subio El Maldito Dolar by Bucle Lunar

Rd 24
Everyone I Love is Depressed by Infinity Kives and Brian Ennals

@Eephus thanks for the thread and keeping the excellent playlist up to date

Going to listen to this Rosalia album over the weekend.

I still can pick 5, so I am going to chill tonight and finish listening to a handful of albums I got from a podcast that don't have something added on the playlist yet.
