2025 Year-end Song Draft - We've Started, join in and pick a song or twenty four (2 Viewers)

Hardcore band cleans up their sound a bit and makes a more accessible album and I absolutely love it, tale as old as time (see also: the last two Turnstile albums). Huge shoegazey guitars, beautiful almost poppy chorus, then even bigger guitars and a whole bunch of screaming.

8.NV - Scowl - Tonight (I'm Afraid)

Spotify wrapup:

My listening age is 21 years older than my actual age. So now you know why I don't participate much in new music threads.

Most listened-to song: Tenderness by General Public, thanks to @Yo Mama

Followed by Arthur Lee's Every Time I Look Up I'm Down or White Dog (I Don't Know What That Means!), Love's Andmoreagain, The Doobie Brothers' South City Midnight Lady (thanks Binky) and Naked Eyes' Promises, Promises.

Most listened-to album: Forever Changes by Love, which makes sense as they were my MAD 5 artist and I was its highest ranker in the albums countdown.

Followed by Bob Mould's Here We Go Crazy, The Doobies' The Captain and Me, Love's Out Here and Arthur Lee's Vindicator.

Top 5 artists:

Love (667 minutes, top 0.07% globally)
Bob Mould
The Doobie Brothers
Journey
Otis Redding

Aside from Mould, that's entirely MAD-influenced.

Spotify...

Listening age = 24 :lmao:

Top artists:
LCD Soundsystem
Wine Lips
CLAMM
Teen Mortgage
GRMLN (not of my own choosing...Spotify has been ramming him down my throat every playlist)

Round 8

The Palava - Lie To Me

The Palava is a York, England, five-piece Indie Rock band.

This banger came out in January and sank without a trace. I didn't discover it until July and forgot how good it was until I was looking over my Spotify Liked Songs list in preparing for this draft.

Here's my Spotify wrap up (at least some of it)

Top artists:
1. Viagra Boys
2. The Clash (thanks MAD!)
3. bby
4. Beastie Boys
5. Destroyer

Top Songs:
1. Man Made of Meat
2. Magnetic
3. Filthy Rich Nepo Baby
4. Can't Say No
5. Same Old Song

Four of these songs were released in January and were immediately on my 2025 annual playlist, which I play a lot.

Tastes like mine can't be defined, per Spotify. But they did it anyway.
1. Indie Rock
2. New Wave
3. Classic Rock
4. Hip Hop
5. Electronic
Seems pretty easy to define, as that's predominantly what I listen to.

I guess I'm not really mad that they put my listening age at one year older than I actually am. I'm just disappointed, and that's much worse.

I didn't know there were 507 different genres but there you go. Indie Rock, Bebop, Folk Pop, Classical and Rock were my top five so maybe my listening age is accurate.

Far be it from me to mansplain to Spotify about genres but I disagree with their definition of Bebop. Bebop was a very short lived movement and unfortunately didn't even make it to the advent of LP records. It was certainly dead long before Charlie Parker passed away in 1955. I listen to a lot of Jazz but not much of it comes from that era.

So like I said, apparently at some point it repeated three Decemberists songs over and over for more than a day and it skewed my results but..

Artists:
The Decemberists
Vampire Weekend
(No spotlighting)
Modest Mouse
Queens of the Stone Age

- those last 4 were all scheduled for Bonnaroo

Genres
Indie Rock
Midwest Emo
Alternative Rock
Pop
Electronic

Top Song - She's Leaving You - MJ Lenderman

Top Album - Manning Fireworks - MJ Lenderman

(He was also to be at Bonnaroo)

I'm the person still using last.fm, so top songs of the year based on it were (two of my picks here included)

1. Birds - Turnstile
2. She's Leaving You - MJ Lenderman
3. Seein' Stars - Turnstile
4. How Do You Know It's Not Armadillo Shells - Hot Mulligan
5. Golden Wolf - DOPE LEMON

Listening age: 69, dude!

Genres [427 total]: Metal, Alternative Hip Hop, Folk Pop, Prog Rock, Indie

Artists [2,097 total] (which 100% align with the above): People Under the Stairs, Aimee Mann, Opeth, Beck, Megadeth

Songs [9,492 total]: Here, For a Good Time - PUTS, S3 - Opeth, the others were PUTS songs

Albums [422 total]: Carried Away - PUTS, Last Will and Testament - Opeth, the others were PUTS albums

3.dq - Rosalia - Berghain

Album is better than any one song for me, but I’ll go for the lead single. Classical pop backed by the London Symphony Orchestra. Two single named ladies for Eephus for the price of one with Bjork making an appearance.

4.dq - Abel Selaocoe - Tsohle Tsohle

I’m behind, so I’ll post two this morning. Sticking with a bit of classical theme this morning - this one from a South African cellist and vocalist. Backed by the Manchester Collective.

he kinda sings this go around... not just talky singing.
Nothing wrong with talky singing

9.NV - Craig Finn - Luke and Leanna

I love the story to the song. It’s so well written lyrically. It was on my list to pick.
I didn't even know he had new stuff out.

I knew all about every GRMLN song released this year, otoh. Thanks Spotify.

Round 9

The Marías - Nobody New

🎶 Baby, I promise
There's nobody new
I'm being honest
There's no one like you🎶

This tasty Dream Pop tune came out in April as part of a non-album double single on the B-side of "Back To Me"
