I love "Wide Awake".  It sounds like a DJ is playing three different records through the soundsystem at the same time:  Talking Heads '77, a Latin breakbeats disc and some ZE Records No Wave song that I can't put my finger on.

That song and the other single have me pretty excited for the new PC. Human Performance was my favorite album of the year whenever that came out.

May 18th iirc. Can't wait. And don't forget the floppinho stylings on track "death will bring change".

Speaking of.... He auditioned in marimba and snare to something called the special music school today for middle school next year. Would be amazing if he got in..

I hear the Heads. I dig it.

@Eephus or @JZilla Have you guys heard of Sjowgren?  They're from your neck of the woods and they've come up a couple times on my shuffle and what I've heard has been really good. So far they just have a handful of singles out like Waiting Room and Now and Then and Seventeen which I guess is their biggest "hit". They're anthemic indie and she has a really great voice but I really can't find much about them online.

I'm not familiar with Sjowgren.  They're from Fremont on the other side of the Bay.  I can't find anything about them ever playing any live dates.

:lmao: :lmao:   PSA: The Spoon song that Spotify likely has on everyone's Release Radar and is under Spoon the band's artist page is most definitely NOT by the Spoon band you think it is.

New Speedy Ortiz today    and Forth Wanderers and Half Waif and Okkervil River.

ALL THE INDIE ROCK

Self-composure distinguishes her from the competition; she would rather trace the filigrees of a wryness as endemic to her as it is to forebears Robert Forster and Liz Phair than give the impression that the inarticulate and often clueless men who populate these songs bother her.

Yeah I don't know em, this song Seventeen is cool but I didn't like the newest song as much.

I don't have much means to keep up with local stuff.. back in Baltimore unless it was an Ottobar band (Double Dagger/Trans Am types) I'd never hear of anybody until they popped up nationally, and I lost track of that scene too.  Still not sure what a Wye Oak is

I think I read something about the new Okkervil River being yacht rock which is concerning.
I'm least interested in it of the ones I posted above. There's a new Dr. Dog as well that also isn't getting great reviews, I haven't really kept up with the recent stuff of either of those bands.

Lol. I went from :excited: to  to  :X  in about 8 seconds when that popped on my release radar this morning.

A bit droopy for my liking.

I'm not a fan, but there was a new Father Misty single today too.

I've been liking Ulrika Spacek a bit.

New Malkmus single a bit too twangy for me...loved the first one.

New thundercat is everything you'd expect...good stuff.

Looking forward to diving into that speedy Ortiz.

My obscure UK Indie pick of the week comes from East London's 485C.  Their self-titled debut has a deep crop of songs ranging from jangly, melodic C86 sounds to a couple of songs that sound kind of Strokesy.  Kapow!   Better the Man

My obscure UK Indie pick of last week was -a 4 song EP by Scots band The Ninth Wave.  They have a darker sound stuck somewhere between the 80s and 90s featuring big drums and a singer with red eye shadow.  Live session

this one is scratching a bunch of my pretentious 80s itchy spots... in a good way (today... tomorrow might just be pretentious and yuck)

I can't believe I actually like the new Post Malone. I am embarrassed for myself.
It's okay. I drafted him in a draft last year. White Iverson and Congratulations aren't terrible trap songs, considering what is passing for good these days. But I'm not wasting time really with his new one when there's so much I haven't heard and know his gig.

Spinning Turnstile's "Time and Space" as I type this. If you like rock/hardcore, you'll probably dig it. Like a cross between Revelation Records and more trad rock/metal. Screamed lyrics.

Touche Amore just came out with a song called "Green." Getting good reviews by the blogs and pubs. Hopefully that means new album this year or early next. I'd be down for that.

Regarding "Wide Awake," I hear Sly and the Family Stone and Rapture in there. Heavily. But not nearly as good.

eta* I'm always really skeptical of hip BKNY bands. They tend to be more hype than actually crafting good songs, though I liked the Courts's first album, for sure.

eta2* Then I heard the "Almost Had A Fight..." song and loved it, then heard "Mardi Gras Beads" and wanted to scratch my own eyes out.

It's really not great. I was just hanging out the other night and it popped up on Spotify so I clicked it. Wasn't paying much attention to the music and then like 30 minutes later, I found myself really getting into. It's definitely not good, but if were partying or working out or something, it's good background music.

Yeah, I can see that. I have trouble relating to young guys that look and sound like him bragging about Bentleys and Beerbongs. Maybe that would have been cool when I was sixteen or going through a mid-life crisis or something. I'll have to give a listen. I did listen to some of it the other night and thought it was better than the last, but without the sort of catchy "hits."

White Iverson came out of left field. This, not so much.

Yeah, literally every song that I paid attention to was about "my life is so sweet" and "I am using drugs/alcohol" etc. There isn't a single good rap verse or anything. He's an odd dude and its hard to even understand how he has ended up as one of the biggest stars of the music world.

Drugs and sex sell. And he toured with Bieber. The popular/celebrity-loving kids are definitely different than past generations -- at least in the 'burbs they are. They're so inauthentic that thug life and drugs and easy sex and tats seem like reasonable, acceptable expression or, even more than that, aspirational. They're a lot like the Boomers, I've noticed.

Not that I disagree. I've lived quite a life of that. Besides the tats.

Love almost had a fight.

Is Mardi gras beads a new release? Excited to hear in spite of your comment.

The song floppinho sings on is called Death will bring change...I mentioned it had a kind of bossa Nova thing going which may not be for everybody.

Mardi Gras Beads is. You can find video with a simple search. Forgot about Floppinho. Looking forward to it.

No, it's almost Beatles-esque, if that makes any sense. But not in a good way, IMO.
Just listened. Yeah, some beatlish harmonies and strings... no es bueno. Has a bridge/something where the guitars come in with some power chords midway through for a few seconds, but other than that a total disappointment.

Death will bring is a lot better melodically and rhythmically, but as more of that sound than it does almost start a fight.

I'll post a video after the song gets released.

Enjoying Hinds' I Don't Run.  A fitting successor to my favorite album of 2016, Leave Me Alone.

They've definitely figured out that the scattershot combined vocals of Carlotta + Ana actually works and gives them a viable, unique sound.  Album doesn't stray too far from their debut.  Happy to get something good on one of my most-anticipated of the year.

"Finally Floating"

Omgomgomgomgomgomgomgomgomgomg... There's a new Pavement single, Deeper!

except it's actually a new Deeper single, Pavement.

:Kicksrock:.  :bag:

I've mentioned Canshaker Pi... New album out and sounds good. Guitary edges of post/pop-punk/indie. I think they might be Dutch.

Idk if I get Preoccupations but I revisited Women this week, which had some of the same guys and that band was ####### awesome.
Back to Women. If anyone is wondering where their sense of melody on songs like Black Rice, Eyesore and Group Transport Hall went (not really present in Preoccupations’ music imo), it’s around in Cindy Lee’s Act of Tenderness. This is the project of Patrick Flegel, who was the singer of Women and brother of Matt who was also in Women and Preoccupations. Warning: this is creepy Beach Boys-themed haunted house kinda ####.

Also an album of stuff by Women’s late guitarist, Chris Reimer came out today. Called Hello People. Haven’t gotten to it yet.

I thought the top five bands thread was kind of silly.  Depending on the day of the week, any five of a hundred or more bands could make up my list.

Supergrass is on my long list so Gaz Coombes' solo record is the first thing I listened to at the stroke of 9PM PDT (well, actually 9:30-ish).  Gaz is 42 now and I don't expect him to reprise "Alright" or "Caught By the Fuzz".  There are a couple of songs that sound a bit like late-era Supergrass but he's mostly taken his music in different and more eclectic directions.

I hear a little John Lennon and a little Radiohead here and there.  Mostly, I hear a guy with access to a lot of studio time and no big interest in appearing on Top of the Pops again.  I don't love it at first but it seems like it could be a grower once the hooks emerge from behind the odd instrumentation and effects.

Love this one after my first listen.

I hear a lot Pavement influence here.

I googled it afterwards and read that it was produced by Malkmus and that they're currently touring with Spiral Stairs.  No surprise.

It's good stuff. Iirc they had an ep last year that was good as well. Highly derivative, which so far caps their potential imo.. But hoping they grow into their own sounds a bit more. Interesting to hear about Malkmus.

After further review, I guess their debut album from '16 was produced by Malkmus, not this one.  I'll have to track that one down, too.
