Best albums of 2018 - playlists in post #1 (1 Viewer)

There's a new Parliament album out today, the first under that moniker since Trombipulation in 1980.  I don't know what differentiates Parliament these days from Funkadelic, P-Funk All-Stars or a George Clinton solo joint and I kind of doubt George does either.

Its 23 tracks clock in at 107 minutes so there's definitely some padding and on first listen, it all blends together.  But it's good that the Mothership is still able to achieve liftoff now and again.

Not sure if someone complained about Release Radar in here or other thread, but I plugged in Release Radar this morning as I left the house and first 3 songs were Good Vibrations by Beach Boys; Rosanna covered by Weezer and this Echo and Bunnymen redo (which is pretty good btw).
I saw the Rosanna/Weezer cover and tuned in. I was disappointed they didn't go full metal in the chorus. It's a boring and perfunctory if competent cover, actually.

Not sure of the context of this, but Good Vibrations could never be a bad song for any occasion.  If it's a re-release, gotta accept as a nugget of gold and move on.

:goodposting:  That was absolutely me #####ing about release radar. Give me real new stuff.

The Chvrches songs that feature the guy singing have been historically awful, but "God's Plan" is pretty damn good in an early Depeche Mode way.

Yeah if you like churches other stuff, this new one is definitely a Chvrches kind of album. I liked, but probably won't love. Just few occasions where I am in the mood for them.

It missed me on first spin. I’ll put up again when I’m making coffee in the morning and playing with the boys.

Frightened Rabbit is my find of the year. I’m sure I’ve missed so much good music hear past six years. Sucks I had to find FR this way.

It might be the worst of their three albums, on first listen I think it is but at least the dude's contribution wasn't a total dud this time.

That song is my new favorite #RealLifeShtick with my daughter.... we can randomly be talking about something and I'll be all like "Hey Girl-girl... I'm wide awake!".  A little while later after she's been doing her own thing for a bit: "Sissy, guess what?   I'm wide awake!"  You can pretty much hear her eye rolls at this point.  Good times.
pretty much my life, except insert 30 other things and my daughter probably wanting to punch me.

I prefer WA. even the duds are growing on me. new favorite song is Free Bird 2, just for the chorus/refrain.
This is absolutely the best song on this new one. I think I still prefer Human Performance as a whole but I think the highs are higher on this one, I just think the fact that there are lows on this new one brings it in a bit below HP.
Free Bird 2 has a bit of Elvis Costello and the Attractions about it.  It wouldn't sound out of place on Blood & Chocolate.

Hatchie is a solo project from the lyrically named Australian Harriete Pitbeam.  There seems to be a never ending supply of dreamy female-fronted pop but this little 5 track EP floats in, floats away and leaves a nice impressiont

I'm obviously a fanboy, but I ####### love this single (colossus). New album called Joy as an act of resistance coming out soon. Goes and it goes and it goes.

Wussy has been around for a long time and I must have heard them before.  They never made much of an impression though.  Maybe I'm in a different place now but their new record really speaks to me.  They have a bunch of high quality songs (including a couple of really obscure covers) and the male/female lead vocals give their sound a nice variety.

Menzingers dropped a new single today too... Toy Soldier

P.S. I saw them live on Sunday... I almost felt young again for a night.
Ok, so the Spotify playlist based on this song led me to Spanish Love Songs who I have A) not previously heard of, and B) dropped an LP in March that I absolutely love. It reminds me of a mix of Menzingers and Mccafferety... two bands that have collectively dropped 3 albums I've adored in the last 12 months.

this week's release radar...

singles:

death grips (sounds good- but a little too death grippy to be the leadoff song in the playlist this morning)

bass drum of death (hoping an album drops soon)

perfume genius (remix)

fever ray (remix)

girls names

downtown boys (irrational love for these guys)

albums:

warmduscher (have only listened to couple singles from them- one, I love, the others are almost rappy... not sure what kind of band this is)

Ok. Kind of underwhelmed with the first couple bass drum o death singles.

Another weird straight up cover by Weezer. Africa. I kept waiting for the insiders hip nod to...something.

Somebody listen to the warmduscher album please. Not sure how I feel about it.

With that kind of endorsement I’ll spin it right up. Maybe as sheep game soundtrack
There are some singles like Big Wilma that I love... But I can't really get a sense of tlwhat this is.

Btw... Weezer's previous single before these covers, acoustic version of Happy Hour, is fantastic.

originally by the Housemartins???

I probably love Laura Marling more than you do but I'm not all in yet over LUMP, her collaboration with Mike Lindsey of Tunng.   The DoR is lyrics & singing=hers and the arrangements=his.  It seems like they tried to be deliberately weird to set LUMP apart from their previous works.  It never totally works for me but it's still strangely listenable over its six tracks plus a final spoken word track listing the album credits.

before I get @ed... another new IDLES single is out, and I'm not that into it. Danny Ndelko or something. probably has a good video.

not a good video, but great song... and fitting for the upcoming month... Total Football seems to be released as a video/single. they did some kind of promo thing for the song, tied in the world cup this weekend- walking distance to home, but I couldn't make it.

There's no shortage of new bands that are mining the vein of post-punk circa 1979-81 so Flasher isn't particularly unique.  But this three piece band from Washington DC nails the sound from when early punks remembered it was fun to dance.

Their new album Constant Image is the best pogoing record of the year.  They pack a ton of hooks into its ten tracks.  Like a lot of albums, it tails off a bit towards the end but if Skim Milk doesn't make you smile, you're not my musical ifriend.

Sounds really good, but way, way too long. Some careful editing of themselves and that would have been awesome. That could have clocked in at under 2:30.

Fair point.  At 3:45, it's the second longest song on the album ("Material" is one second longer).

I liked the song by the IDLES. Sing-along stuff there.
