I thought it was kind of a lazy, gender based comparison but I was on my first cup of coffee.

But Calvi's record makes a strong first impression.  She has an incredible voice and something to say.

fwiw- I meant bizarre in a good way. I would never have thought of putting those two artists in the same room- but it totally works.

 
frightened rabbit will perform again...

Frightened Rabbit have announced their first show since the death of their frontman Scott Hutchison earlier this year. The band, billed as “The Songs Of Frightened Rabbit,” will perform at Sleep In The Park in Glasgow, Scotland. The event, which raises money to combat homelessness, takes place over four cities and one night on 12/8, with attendees sleeping outside in Scottish parks around the country.

The band will be joined by various special guests on vocals, including The Twilight Sad’s James Graham, as NME reports.

that was dumb of me to think it was andy partridge etc with a new song. seeing echo and interpol and sweet dreams put me in the way-back machine thinking anything was possible.

this XTC appears to be a young kiwi woman who to my ears is unabashedly copying Lorde.

but above... Cayucas is fun, Yak too. Interpol kinda ho-hum. Broncho had a good hook, orbital sucked (been liking their recent singles up till now). 

 
Not a new album exactly, but I like the 1994 song Rep. Beto O'Rourke gave to Rolling Stone from his old band Foss which also included Cedric Bixler-Zavala of Mars Volta and At The Drive-In fame.

You know, it's tough to replicate or recapture those days. Haven't even spun the record. I could lie to you and tell you I'm going to, but we both know that might just be a charade. I wish them well. Love some of their old records. 

 
How is Hey Saturday Night not the number one song in the country?  How come everyone is not talking about this album?

My random discovery of the year.  Just happened to be browsing through new releases on Spotify and played it.  Had never heard of them before.  

 
My favorite album by Sun Kil Moon, Tiny Cities, (which I guess is actually a cover album, but so so different from Modest Mouse) is finally available on Spotify. 

Happy to listen to it again, but it does make me wonder why they could do this so well, but then crank out audio diarrhea for the last ten years.

there are some other tunes on the album besides the singles that I like- particularly the best-named song on the album, Never Fight a Man with a Perm.

eta: really had no idea they had caught on as much as that... lots of angry, liberal white dudes out there I guess.

discover weekly pointed me to an interesting band, I don't recall hearing of... East Brunswick All Girls Choir. Aussie of course. a bit of pre-electronic radiohead with jeff buckley. just jumped into their 2018 album, Teddywaddy. I like it.

That one was on my release radar this morning... I screenshot it and sent it to a GB group text with the caption "surely good advice".  

 
Huh. I know this is largely about confirming our love of off-the-beaten path artists and a vehicle to discover new artists, but I'm going to stray from the coop and just say that Eminem's Kamikaze hasn't been out of rotation with me since it dropped. 

It's got quite a bit of fire to it.

Hey guy, my favorite band is #2 in the UK.... I'm all about pop culture mass market.

 
along with the Girls Choir, DW pointed me to Flat Worms (not to be confused with Hook Worms). turns out I had playlisted a couple songs last year, but somehow missed the album. garage/rock (empahasis on the latter)... big, good stuff for lovers of guitars.

I gave it 8.7 eyerolls and 7.9 winces, but a 9.2 in terms of technical proficiency.

 
Spiritualized: And Nothing Hurt leaked. Beautiful, heartbreaking album. Tough to casually toss out "masterpiece", but I had high expectations and it exceeded them. Ordered the deluxe vinyl package today. Not sure if this will be his last, but if it is, what a way to go out.

I'm getting into full catchup mode now, way behind on new stuff, I'll take any recommendations for stuff that was great that might have been missed.

My early top ten at the moment is likely some combination of U.S. Girls, Mitski, Father John Misty, Lets Eat Grandma, Rolling Blackouts CF, Parquet Courts, Public Access TV, Born Ruffians, Jeff Rosenstock, Middle Kids.

Early Top-10, huh?  I think 1 and 2 are locked... 1 is surely not to change, after that they are not in order:  Jeff Rosenstock, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Mt. Joy, Franz Ferdinand, Nathaniel Rateliff, McCafferty, Parquet Courts, Spanish Love Songs, Ghost Mice, & Ty Segall's first one. 

ETA: there is a new Direct Hit! coming out in the fall that I expect to be an easy top-5 for me as I am a sucker for them

Have we discussed Coolzy? just stumbled onto the 2018 album, And the ### ####ed Friend Killers... and am enjoying it. first song sounded like pavement-lite, then went into all kinds of different directions including some aesop-rock sounding stuff.

pop-indie-hop? seems like it might be up jaysus and rockaction's tea-kettles.
