Best albums of 2018 - playlists in post #1 (2 Viewers)

Btw... My previous post was a joke. I'm a goofily big idles fan, as the suffering members of this thread can attest to.

But I sadly missed them last time they came through nyc. Welcome aboard!

What else are you listening to?

Btw... Speaking idles, I've been listening to a lot of Heavy Lungs, also from Bristol. Just learned Danny Nedelko is in the band.

You participate often enough in this thread that your sentiment seems odd.

Just your personality? Or are you down?  Where does that come from, honestly?

Serious question.
I'm good. But most music is just eh. And i find less and less of it to be offensively bad, but more and more i just shrug when i hear something new. I think as you get older, at least for me, your tastes harden. I also think that i have to be listening to someone who i find compelling in some way, otherwise i just tune out. There are so many bands that are full of boring dudes.

I was very moved by hearing Chesterfield King live last week.

Oh, cool. Just wondering where that came from.

I've found that I've gone backwards in music taste to move me. So much stuff I missed out on back in the day because I was such a little punk acolyte. That's what keeps me fresh. I'm generally bored with the new stuff, too. The artists that move me today surprise me, frankly. Lorde actually comes to mind as somebody modern who I really like.

Which is strange. But yeah, I take your point. But could it be that the algorithms, music Phds, and all the money spent are making it less offensively bad but more subject to meh? Just a thought.

dove back into Smote Reverser... thee oh sees for the first time in a while

they're not an every day band for me, but dammit- when I'm ready they turn my crank nice.

similar band that I've playlisted before, but popped up today- ORB (not the orb electronica outfit)- also scratched the itch. like a modern black sabbath w/ thee oh sees mixed in.

I was never a big Dinosaur Jr. guy, but those J Mascis solo albums are pretty great.

@El Floppo If the good Lord's willin' and the crick don't rise, Mrs Eephus and I will be spending our 33rd wedding anniversary in the company of IDLES.  Tickets went on sale today for their show next May at the GAMH in SF.

The Glands have a new album out today called Double Coda.

I love this band. Their eponymous album from 2000 is an all-time favorite of mine.  I'm happy to see all their albums are finally available on Spotify. I think this is a recent addition as I've looked for them frequently there.

This "new"album is a compilation of previously unreleased songs/demos/B sides that the surviving band members culled together after their primary song writer, Ross Shapiro, died of lung cancer in 2016.  Some songs obviously weren't completed yet but the album is still very good.  There is definitely enough material here to have released another excellent album.

Looking forward to diving in... Don't think I know them.

The second half of the year has been pretty poor for albums IMO.  I'm hoping to be proven wrong by EOY lists from here and there.

I think By the Way, I Forgive You by Brandi Carlile is a runaway winner for best album of 2018. The songs and arrangements are powerful and pertinent. She also had the best set at Austin City Limits this year, in my opinion.

Album that grew on me over time: Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino by Arctic Monkeys...seemed too silly at first, but there's enough good tunes on there that I keep going back to it.

Best album by a local artist: Bad Actress by deM atlaS. deM is part of Minneapolis-based hip hop label Rhymesayers. Tomorrow Party is a psychodelic, droning,  yet pounding opener. Worth a listen via Spotify or check out the visual EP on Youtube (https://youtu.be/G_zmuYC9-Vg).

I like this. Kinda sounds like Meatbodies to me (who also give off a Thee Oh Sees vibe).

I remember you loving their self-titled and I know I tried it but at the time it didn’t do much for me but it’s sounding damn good to me right now.

this isn't doing much for me today.

but because it's you guys, I'll give it more listens on another day.

been browsing on spotify, to happy success today.

didn't think they were still around, but the Poster Children's 2018 album, Grand Bargain is fantastic. some old folk bringing the goods this year (supahchunk, etc).

**BAD BAND NAME ALERT**

Sunshine Frisbee Laserbeam’s Blackout Cowboy is some pretty fun Brit guitar pop. I’ve read them compared to Weezer and that’s fair. I kinda hear the Cribs. Try it as long as your Spotify habits aren’t publicized.

yeah, I am playing them now based on the name alone.

ETA: I have high hopes that I love it so I can have both them and Rainbow Kitten Surprise on my EOY albums list - so far so good!

my RR is pretty sucky today. algorithm must be busted... stones, police (who appear to have a "new" album out), and some other singles that I had to blot out of my playlist.

new Fontaines D.C. single out though- one of my faves, from Ireland.

Mine was really bad. Everything was a reissue it seemed like.

I know this is a new music thread but the remaster of the White Album is incredible. My favorite album of all time probably and I’m hearing things I’ve never heard before.

New Anderson .Paak is out and downloading on my phone now. Interestingly it doesn’t include his two incredible singles from earlier this year... Hopefully the album lives up to those!

Iron Chic and Toys That Kill just released a split yesterday. Iron Chic is sounding melodic, Toys That Kill is sounding like the masters of the punk rock craft that they are.
