Best albums of 2018 - playlists in post #1 (1 Viewer)

just found a kind of... not sure... hip-hop/spoken word/loungey thing by a guy called Pan Amsterdam. more talky than rapped... and definitely with a tongue in cheek. I like it. reminded me a little of aesop rock.... but I'm terrible at comparisons.

Iron Chic and Toys That Kill just released a split yesterday. Iron Chic is sounding melodic, Toys That Kill is sounding like the masters of the punk rock craft that they are.
Spent some time with this over night, it was fun.  I was not expecting to like the TTK side better like I did.

Toys That Kill have been around forever. They're gotten particularly good over the past decade, IMHO.  One of the best punk acts around today, and maybe the second-best ever from San Pedro, I like to say.

I discovered there's a genre of music called Outrun (also known as Synthwave)

Tim Cappelo, the guy who did the popular song "I Still Believe" from the Lost Boys movie is on this.

Hadn't seen this band mentioned in the thread. Called GUNSHIP and thought it was pretty interesting and different sounding stuff?

If you like this - the album is quite good

I appreciate all things lost boys sax man. even if that definitely isnt true for the song linked, and likely the new genre (but I appreciate learning about new genres).

and I still believe is a The Call song, no?

Liking this for some upbeat instrumental music. Thanks.
Drums sound like a much later, much more acoustic/analog iteration of a groove-based Mogwai (if that exists, but Mogwai fans will know what I'm talking about with Rave Tapes. Imagine it almost in a club with heavier drums) -- the guitars do sound like early Explosions In The Sky.

Thanks for taking the time to share, opensourcebeer.

The Marked Men just came out with a singles comp on Nov. 23rd, if that counts. It's on Spotify. It's worth a listen even to hear old 7" EPs. Just a great band, IMHO. It's called On The Other Side.

it's not new, but my local coffee shop had on Sampa the Great, which I figured out after asking but premising the question with- is this...  I can't remember the name, struggling to remember- no. is it.. I can't remember the name again, but I think she did a couple tracks with massive attack? no. oh... cool... have you listened to... name I can't remember... she's out of dc, does cool stuff like this, but more indie. ummm... no- here's your mocha.

Eh, maybe only at times. Their poppier stuff.
I hear what I want to hear... but I'm hearing a bit of jay reatards sharper/no-reverb guitars and some of his song structure and vocal approach, with kind of a superchunk vibe. maybe strike the latter. they're pretty straight ahead in the punk/garage wheelhouse

a little maybe kinda sorta similar to rockaction's marked men... London Bullet's Secrets of the Sewer was the first album in my "top recommendations for you" this morning (typically hit or miss based on whether 7yo floppinho has been using the account). they seem to have an album from 2000, and this one- which is garagepunk with a little bit of what shame brings too (but so far, not as good, IMO.. but still listenting).

eta: another find- Shark Toys (album- Labyrinths)- looks like I had playlisted a song of theirs already, but forgotten about or never listened to the whole album. the whole album is really good- a little like No Age, angular jangly postpunk garage.

Found myself mindlessly listening to the new (only?) Stand Atlantic album last night before realizing two things... 1) that I was really digging it, and 2) that the singer was a chick.

ETA: They are also australian. I seem to find myself liking aussie bands the last few years.

All I know is that I'm still listening to Not Coping by Clowns. Friggin' Aussie bunch.

is this the start to your year-end list? or just posting a bunch of stuff you like?  either way.

i've asked before- but is it pronounced slow-thrust, or sloth-rust. it's important.

can't believe Cat Power is still cruising along- will have to give that a listen.

P.S. my top 20 albums of the year list currently has over 30 albums on it... with, like, 10 that could be #2 depending on which way the wind blowing the day I finalize it. Good times.

did you see that Jeff Rosenrosen is opening for the hold steady this week?

and yeah- I'm sure once I look, there'll be the usual too many top picks. but off the top of my head...

IDLES & Parquet Courts 1a & 1b

No Age, Superchunk, Shame, West Thebarton, Cable Ties, Drenge (EPs), Preoccupations, A place to bury strangers,  Young Fathers... drawing blanks on more.

Just a bunch of random stuff I have liked this year.

Bodega is another brooklyn post-punk band. I'm not selling it too well, but they're good. Knock the hustle

ETA: ok- I'm backing out of this one... a little annoying for a full length listen- but I like the linked single and the occasional other one-off song.

Rosenstock rules, but I'd rather slam a toilet seat down on my penis than see The Hold Steady live. They're maybe the worst band of the century, granted there's a lot of century left to go.

I stopped reading this site because the navigation became so frustrating when they upgraded. I still can’t figure out how to get to the top five metal albums.
there's a secret handshake involved.

also clicking "next page+" at the bottom of the page might work. dunno. I don't know the secret handshake yet.
