Best albums of 2019 (Spotify playlists in 1st post) (1 Viewer)

I don't know what to make of Simpson's album length video on Netflix
I'm squarely in the "love the album, could do without the anime" camp.

And no matter how many descriptions I read of that album, I still wasn't prepared for what it was.  As some commenter on YouTube said, it's like if Waylon Jennings had sex with Queens of the Stone Age while The Black Keys were pleasuring themselves in the corner of the room.

It's like the director's cut of Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend video

Had the same thought (along with the obligatory comparison to Heavy Metal).

I have to admit that I closed my eyes to just listen to the album for much of it, but I didn't really understand what was going on half the time.  Like, was the dude who looked like the Joker who exhaled the purple toxic stuff on people that same guy as the obese dude on the floating sky platform thingy who shot the purple toxic stuff on people?  No idea.  I did enjoy the out of the blue dance number.

I need to watch it again without Mrs. Eephus saying what is this, this is stupid, why did he make this, this doesn't make any sense.

I want to start smoking drugs again just so I can watch the Sturgill Simpson Netflix "video" again.  I bet I would get it then...

ETA:  I double love the album today.  Like, I may touch myself if I keep thinking about it.

On Repeat is pretty cool. Not sure where a couple of the songs from the end came from. Or how Ariana Grande slipped in there.

my repeat rewind is primarily the stuff that i was listening to over and over as I culled down my 2019 mid-year draft selections.

Just happened to be listening now and "A Good Look" came on and I was thinking the same thing - and then saw this comment. I can't figure out if I like this song but before that I was really digging it.
I think that's the good times (show) sounding tune. I like it a lot, if so.

Love the new Sturgill album.  If you haven't already, watch Sound & Fury on Netflix.  Sturgill is IMO the most unique artist that country music has ever seen.

eta: dammit i need to keep up with this thread

Listening to ithat song again and I finally figured out what it reminded me of. Listen to the chorus and tell me you don’t hear a Robert Palmer song.

I think the song that grabbed me was “Make Art Not Friends”

unique and interesting yet still jammable records aren’t that easy to come by

As I'm sitting in my parked car in my office parking lot right now, listening to Best Clockmaker on Mars for the second time in a row, I just can't get that image out of my head. Actually reading the lyrics synched it for me.

ETA: it's fat, coked out, Waylon in my vision for some reason. :oldunsure:

Liking Prison on a Hill by Somos. Don’t really know how to describe it. Emo? Singer sounds like the Surfer Blood guy to me. Guitar player just died. 😢

Well, ok- with that in mind, challenge accepted to listen to the song and album again!

Listening earlier today, I was thinking about thee oh sees- mostly in terms of taking a genre, throwing it out, mixing in some other stuff and turning it all into an upside down hybrid jam band.

All this Waylon Jennings talk reminds of this...

I started watching the latest season of Punisher on Netflix and Shooter Jennings was on there. Hadn't heard of him nor did I know he was Waylon's kid. Looks alot like him though. Not a huge country guy but he sounded pretty good. Might need to give him a spin or two on Spotify.

Shooter produced the latest Duff McKagan album that came out early this year.  It's more country than rock 'n roll and the dark material suits Duff's voice.

Heard of him but I don't think I ever heard him.  I know he's respected relative to the radio country crap out there, and if he's like Waylon that's a good thing because Waylon is the best of all the country people.  But I am still a rock head thru and thru.

Man lots of interesting stuff out today.

DIIV

Menzingers

Red River Dialect

Titus Andronicus Audiotree live

Gatecreeper

This is where I was earlier this week. I'd heard and seen his name by too many people I respect when it comes to music, so I put on Sound & Fury just as background in the office Tuesday morning. It ended then I went back and listened it (more intently) again just to see if it was really as good as my not listening ear thought it was. It was better. So I queued up A Sailor's Guide. And have just played those two albums in full on repeat while in the office since. Starting to think maybe I should dig even further back.

Anybody listening to this new surfin stevens classical piano album? @wikkidpissahissah?
what's all this then?!

ETA: a ballet, The Decalogue, apparently. out 10/18. listened to the teasers on his site and it definitely uses the same harmonic alphabet as Satie, similarly to solo piano music he's released in the past. i'd wondered why he stopped making music as soon as i started bragging on him. a ballet is a good excuse.
