Cleveland Browns (7 Viewers)

  Depth, I guess.  He's the 4th best corner on this roster though - 5th if you include Randall.  No matter what Gregg Williams says.

Although I shouldn't complain.  This approach to free agency isn't what I expected, but had hoped - don't make the big splash, fill some gaps.  But Trumaine Johnson was the one splash I wanted, so that's probably why this is a bit of a letdown.
I have to think CLE will sign another CB.  Still a few names out there.  I wonder if they'll take a shot at Fuller and the Transition Tag?

Top CB FAs:

Malcolm Butler, Patriots (agreed to sign with Titans for five years and $61 million)
Rashaan Melvin, Colts
Kyle Fuller, Bears (transition-tagged)
Richard Sherman, Seahawks (signed with 49ers for three years and $39 million)
Patrick Robinson, Eagles
Nickell Robey-Coleman, Rams (re-signed with Rams for three years and $15.76 million)
Trumaine Johnson, Rams (agreed to sign with Jets)
Bashaud Breeland, Redskins (agreed to sign with Panthers for three years and $24 million)
T.J. Carrie, Raiders
Aaron Colvin, Jaguars (agreed to sign with Texans for four years and $34 million)
E.J. Gaines, Bills
Prince Amukamara, Bears (re-signed with Bears)
Morris Claiborne, Jets
Tramon Williams, Cardinals
Brent Grimes, Buccaneers (re-signed by Buccaneers for 1 year and $10 million)
DeShawn Shead, Seahawks
Ross Cockrell, Giants
Jeremy Lane, Seahawks
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Giants
Johnathan Joseph, Texans
Byron Maxwell, Seahawks
Davon House, Packers

The #Giants are expected to sign former #Patriots LT Nate Solder, source said. They get their franchise left tackle. Huge get.

The one variable that no one knows, including the teams, and won't know until after it happens, is if there will be a trade-up to #2 a/o #3 for a QB.

History shows that the QB's will be selected via trade-up, but will it be into the top 3? or later in round #1?  Mocks are fun and all, but the second that first trade-up happens all mocks are toast.

I don't know if 1-2-3 will be QB-QB-QB, but at this point I think it should be.  Then we decide to trade down or pick Chubb.  I just hope Chubb shows some better athletic testing at his pro day/private workout.  I know what I saw on the field and I liked it, but that performance two weeks ago was a collar tug.

Buffalo definitely moving up, imo. Jets are "good" now
Not sure I'd classify the Jets as being "good" on the QB front.  McCown is a solid bridge and Teddy is a crapshoot.  I think they're still in the market for a QB in the draft.  Whether it's a priority to move up in the draft is a different story.  But I think they take one early.

I meant "good" in terms of having to move up

I'll be stunned if Chicago doesn't match whatever contract Fuller is offered.  Would love to be wrong though.

I'm not going to pretend to know how great the rest of them are, but the only one that's interesting to me now that Colvin (not a great fit here anyway) and Breeland (given his contract maybe I over valued him) are off the board is Shead.

I dont know man there are some serious serious flaws with each of the top 3 (Rosen, Allen, Darnold).  Not one of them is a sure thing although I think Darnold is closer but this year he took a step backward which was a bit odd.

Rosen, Darnold, and Mayfield*

Allen is a shmuck.

Allen is a shmuck.
Mayfield has had his shmuck like manzielish behavior as well.

All 3 have flaws, major ones at that.   I would have bet any amount of money that this years crop of qb's would blow last years picks out of the water pre season now I am not so sure.

A potential attitude problem with loads of success as a QB >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> a groin grabbingly awful QB

I'm REALLY glad Dorsey is in charge...
 . In all honesty, the GM should draft the right player after consulting with the head coach.

Dorsey knows the QB he is taking.

I feel like it was his major mission. Wouldn't be shocked if that QB has already been informed.

Mayfield saying he's the man to "fix the browns" sticks out to me.
It would be really surprising if Mayfield goes #1

We've seen the QB the HC wanted to trade for last year, and he's sitting on the sideline watching everyone else get FA deals.  I'd rather have Dorsey, Highsmith, Wolf, and Haley making the QB call with Hue listening to the conversation and taking notes.

This is going to come off as hyperbole, but I'm dead serious.

Dorsey should not listen to one word Hue Jackson has to say about QB.  The narrative out there is that the QB problems the last two years have been Sashi, but that is 100% bull ####.  That QB room was/is Hue's.  It's all Hue.  He doesn't have the slightest clue how to pick a QB.  Maybe he can help groom them once they're in, but when it comes to external eval his opinion is as valuable as that homeless guy that told Jimmy to draft the coke head.

Then fire him now.

Seriously. I get there ire about Hue. But if you don't value the input of the guy tasked with developing the team, fire him.

Thats truly the puzzling piece to it.  A HC that goes 1-31 should be fired.  It's common sense.  There was a theory that Hue had an escalator clause in his contract that would give him a guaranteed lump sum if he was fired prior to his 3rd season as HC.  At this point, there aren't many HC options available, unless you run with Haley - which is a possibility.  You won't meet/talk to many CLE fans who like Hue.  @MAC_32 summed it up very well.

Still thinking that there could be a contingent trade in the works with Buffalo and that the TT trade was part 1.

Part 2 would be the trade for the #4 pick for Buffalo's  2 1st's plus possibly recouping the 3rd sent in the initial trade.

Browns could then pick up a stud CB (Ward or Jackson) and JT's eventual replacement at Left OT (Brown or McGlinchey)

in the 1st round
Dorsey has already established a trading relationship with Buffalo.

Buffalo needs a QB and they've traded up into the top-twelve and added multiple picks and have said they want to move up but not too far due to the exponential cost it takes the higher up you have to go.

AND it has been reported they like Josh Allen who 'should' be available with the #4 pick.

  • Does anyone think that Arizona is set at QB with Glennon?
  • Or New York with Teddy?  (dude only threw two passes last year after a devastating injury and one of them was intercepted)
  • Or that Elway is happy with the non-athletic Case Keenum going forward as his franchise QB?
  • Or that Buffalo is set with '7 interception in his first game Nate Peterman'?
The top two picks are going to be QBs.

Indy can take Saquon or Chubb but they'd be really smart to trade down with Denver or New York AND still get one those guys while picking up an extra pick or two.

No matter how you slice it, the 4th pick is going to be very valuable to some team seeking a QB because someone will be left out and it looks like Buffalo would be the team with the ammo and inclination to move up and Dorsey has already established a good trading relationship and has proven he can make deals.

I don't care about relationships, you take Chubb at 4, if he's there.

Or Barkley if by some miracle.
Maybe you missed this:

The #Browns are expected to sign former #49ers RB Carlos Hyde, source said. He’s getting a three-year deal worth more than $15M, including $6M in year 1.

4:40 AM - 14 Mar 2018

--------------------------------

You do not sign the top available FA RB and pay them $6 million unless they are starting.

Come on Soul, Dorsey has been rumored to be after Hyde for weeks so that pipe dream of Saquon isn't long gone, it never was going to happen.

The Rams, Boys and Vikings are/were WHAT without those RBs?
worse (though now they do have a better defense and what looks to be their franchise QB as well), about the same (just in a different way), and better

no?

You wouldn't take a generational RB talent at 4, cuz you're paying hyde 6m?
I think I'd take a generational player at any position, but I'm not sold on the power aspect of his game.  If he were a tackle-breaker in addition to the other skills he displays, I would be with you.

"In a separate deal, former Detroit Lions tight end Darren Fells plans to sign three-year, $12 million deal with the Browns, sources told ESPN's Dan Graziano. Fells caught 17 passes for 177 yards and three touchdowns for the Lions last season, and his blocking should fill a need for Cleveland."

So let's say the draft goes

us- QB

2- RB

3- Chubb

4..................................I didn't particularly want to draft a RB this high in the draft, and never think it's a good idea, not even for this mythical "generational talent" hyperbole.

I think we absolutely have to explore a trade down because ANY player we could draft right now, to me, would not be worth what we can get in trade for this pick for someone wanting a QB or even Barkley.  If the draft fell that way I just might be ok with 12 and 22 from buffalo (though ideally 12, a 2nd, and 2019 1st), or similar deal from Arizona.

Sucks about Solder.  Seems like that is a contract we could have pretty easily given........................unless of course Dorsey knows something we dont with Thomas.

If Thomas is done, then I would imagine Solder turned down more money from us and chose the Giants.  If that's the case, darn.

They have so many picks this year that it seems better to get 19 picks.

I do agree.

Especially from a team trading up for a rookie QB.  Not only will their 1st rounder not help them much at all for this season, it just might make them worse if the QB has a rough start.

Fournette has won two games. As a rookie. With Bortles.
- RBs don't win SBs on their own without a very-good QB AND/OR a top-five defense.  A bad QB almost assures losses and even with a top QB if the defense is terrible you don't win.

QB is thee top position that correlates with SB victories.

If you want highlights and out of the playoffs in the first round then take Ladalian Thomlinson or Eric Dickerson or Adrian Peterson who are/will be in the HOF and have zero playoff victories between them.

- Fournette played well but far from great.  He was one of the top ten most expensive RBs last year as a rookie and he was taken with the fourth pick of the draft.

His average per carry was low because he had no QB and defenses stacked the box.  His forte was breaking runs to the outside, much like Saquon because those guys were soo big and athletic in college that if they saw a stacked box they'd bust it outside for a long gain but that doesn't work in the NFL.  Fournette and Saquon never had to do the dirty work between the tackles so if Saquon lands with a team that doesn't have a QB he'll face the same dilemma.

Leonard Fournette was below league average in yards/carry & success rate in 2017 (despite being touted as a generational prospect) and will be one of the 10 most expensive RBs in 2018

http://www.profootballweekly.com/2018/02/14/pfw-nfl-draft-newsletter-sample-mosher-charts-the-top-rbs/a6fjmrs/#//

...reasons to be concerned about him going forward.

Of the five running backs that were charted, Barkley saw the least number of defenders in the box on average. He saw six or fewer defenders in the box on nearly 69 percent of his runs. That’s not something that is likely to translate to the NFL, especially if he is drafted to be the focal point of a team’s offense.

A big reason as to why he saw so many light boxes was due to the fact that more than 81 percent of his runs came out of 10 or 11 personnel, as it forced defenses to be in nickel or dime. This isn’t to criticize Barkley or Penn State, because rushing out of 10 and 11 personnel should be the norm in both college and in the NFL. And to Barkley’s credit, he dominated teams out of 10 and 11 personnel, averaging an insane 6.2 yards per carry. But when he was asked to run out of any other type of personnel grouping, Barkley's yards per carry dropped all the way down to 3.01 yards per rush.

Due to the amount of time Barkley ran out of 10 and 11 personnel, he rarely faced loaded boxes at the collegiate level. Of his 151 charted runs, Barkley faced eight or more men in the box just six times, averaging two yards per carry. Even against seven-man fronts, Barkley averaged just 4.6 yards per carry on 41 carries, but those numbers are somewhat skewed due to one 65-yard run. Barkley lost yardage on nearly 22 percent of his runs when facing seven defenders in the box. His offensive line deserves quite a bit of the blame, but he isn’t faultless either, as he often bounced runs outside for losses that should have produced moderate gains. Running against loaded boxes just wasn’t something Barkley did well last season, and it’s fair to wonder if that will be a weakness of his entering the NFL.

Barkley isn’t going to be a player that you are going to want to play smash-mouth football with. He’s a high-variance runner who might lead the league in negative runs (more than 16 percent of his runs over the last two years lost yardage). However, he is a threat to score anywhere from the field from any formation.

If Barkley can find himself in a spread offense with a good quarterback, he would be a threat to put up 2,000 yards from scrimmage in his rookie season. However,if he is miscast as a work-horse back who is forced to carry the ball 20 times against crowded boxes (such as what Leonard Fournette was asked to do in Jacksonville last season), he may disappoint early.

Is he any good?  I know nothing of him
More of a press coverage DB.  He played opposite of Peters, so he had a lot of looks go his way.  He got burnt a few times which knocked his PFF grade down.  He's a decent #2, good #3 CB.  I don't see this signing stopping us from getting another DB like Gaines or Melvin or Claibourne.

You don't need to break tackles when you're faster than a speeding bullet, can leap over tall buildings, and can 3 cone quicker than a locomotive.  :D

No worries man, don't think we go wrong either way

They should unveil a statue tomorrow. No ####, the man deserves his own parade at this point. Good on JT, he's set himself nicely just hate that the teams he was on weren't successful.
Yeah, a statue of him getting off the pot.
