DR★ Music Draft reopened: make any outstanding picks and let's talk about the next draft (1 Viewer)

@rockaction

closing the band out with our final guitarist Eddie Hazel. He can shred on solos, play the SRV style guitar on heavy blues rock songs but he also brings the funk that will play well with Dilla. He can offer a more eclectic modern sound Chuck can't. I can picture him doing some awfully avant-garde stuff with Ornette. Plus he has a great tone every time.

Frantic Moment

hopefully he wasn't picked as I didn't follow the thread as close as Rock. I tried searching the thread but we know how reliable that function can be.

A;right I am very happy with my assemblage of expired artists.

At this point I maybe just want to tweak the personality a little bit.

First, I'll go with Janitor Joe and Hole bassist Kirsten Pfaff  (Violet) and maybe some vocals or background vocals with Sharon Jones.

FInally, every band, even a bunch of miscreants like mine needs an enforcer. A calm, respected guy who everyone loves and wants to please. He's not a great rapper, but I hate rap, so its not that big of a deal. He can be security, crew, or anything else needed.

RAPPER - Walter Payton Superbowl Shuffle

Sharon needs to take center stage. When I saw her with the Dap Kings in the summer of 2015 she was fabulous. She had so much energy, and her and the Dap Kings were just electric. She was such a great entertainer. So much fun. Her hair was real short from the chemo she had received from her battle with cancer, which she had won. Nobody wanted them to leave the stage. They opened for the Tedeschi Trucks Band. We got to see her and the Dap Kings again when they joined TTB on stage during their set.  Sadly she suffered a stroke while watching the 2016 election. She joked and said that Trump winning gave her the stroke. Unfortunately, she had another one while in the hospital, and she took the magic carpet ride up to heaven. Of all the artists I have seen live over that last five years, she comes in at #1 as the one I was blown away with.

Regarding the next draft:

First off, I hope no one stays away because of the drama in this one. Joe might have been a little itchy on the delete trigger, but keep in mind, he has transformed this from an unsustainable trolling grounds into a much better site with real discussion and a huge discount in inappropriate behavior. Then the Vegas tragedy on top of all that.. I just am inclined to give a wide berth of respect and I am really amazed and gladdened by him re-opening it.He's working hard to make this community successful and its usually pretty thankless, but his heart is good and he's doing a damn fine job.I think most of us fail to realize the work he puts into this when his rational self would say just shut it all down and sell boats.

As to the draft itself- how about an LP draft from 65-85, two LPS a year with the restriction that it can have NO Top 40 Billboard hits on the LP?

And while this one went great for 4-5 rounds, we could have definitely used a clock after that, mainly because we could not keep up with who was on skip. .

:goodposting:  Joe is also a big Tom Petty fan, and that clouded his judgement on top of the Vegas killings. He had an emotional reaction and fixed it. I like your LP idea.

Idea sounds good. Its just tough for some to check in regularly (myself included) and it's always easier for me when it's a pick a day or 2 day. I know it cuts down on banter but it also helps keep things more streamlined and easy to follow. Just my 2 cents.

Before we get to the next draft, a huge thanks to @Mr. Ected for bossing this one.  My conversation w/ Joe last night was very cordial and constructive.  He opened with an apology which set a good tone.  I'd purposely avoided the board last night after the thread was locked and watched a "Let's Make a Deal" marathon w/ Mrs. Eephus.  I didn't see rockaction's and ScottNorwood's threads until later.  Sorry I left ScottNorwood off the group message--I never knew his name didn't have a space in it.  I appreciate Joe's commitment to the board.  I never go in the Shark Pool but I imagine that keeps the mods busy, especially this year.

It's been a while since we've done an album draft.  The obvious challenge w/ the format is checking for top 40 hits.  I guess the gimmick is to drive obscurity.  I'm always down for more of that but hopefully with less verification.

I thought this draft moved at a good pace for a bunch of dead people.

In nearly any draft, I would think after round three (once we pass the continental slope), one pick per day; each day begins at sunrise on the east coast. ... and let the peanut gallery weigh in on who "won the day."

I kind of like your 65-85 suggestion, on the contingency you can point me authoritative Billboard source on wikipedia. Billboard.com is a big pill to swallow. That said, I'd favor a draft that emphasizes individual songs. Too many crappy albums with one great song. For example

I checked Billboard and that album is all clear

Or maybe two songs that did not crack the Top 40 Singles, main chart only.? Seems less wieldy than two LPS. We could do a song per year per day. snaked each round.

You gonna run it?  I think the deadly animal draft was the last draft I participated in.   I'd do this.

I like the idea of no top 40 songs. Mainstream chart only. I think it is easily accessed via Billboard top 100 by year Wikipedia pages. This forces things out of the mainstream and I can has jazz.
To be clear, I do not mean Top 40 for the year, I mean cracked the Top 40 at any point during the year. But only US main Billboard rankings

I like the idea of everybody picking from the same year during a given round.  I think that gimmick added some thread cohesiveness in Genrepalooza.

I'm OK w/ whatever rules we come up with to increase obscurity but the easier the better.

I generally prefer songs to albums but we haven't done albums lately

Non top 40 songs drafted by year? Hmm. I'd do that.

Clarence Clemons was doing a radio interview a few decades ago and a caller commented on his gritty growling sound that works so perfectly with everything else the band does. Clarence humbly explained he wants a raunchy passionate wail in some situations because Bruce would rather some things be said with music. The caller then said the only other sax player she knew who could sound that good growling was Steve Douglas. Clarence again humbly said that Steve Douglas did not sound like him, but he did try very hard to sound like Steve Douglas.

He is the sax on Pet Sounds. Like Glen Campbell, he was a mainstay cog in Phil Spector's Wrecking Crew, inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame posthumously. We lost him to a massive heart attack while he was warming up with Ry Cooder in the early 90s. He recorded with Bob Dylan and the Ramones. He toured and recorded with Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin.

Wikkid mentioned Bird, and Miles, and Trane. That made me think of Django, and Wes, and Louis, and oma goodness Mingus on bass. But those giants didn't seem to fit here. Might as well consider Caruso and Segovia and Paganini. But Douglass fits and he's my scrubby for the "other" category.

The best Steve Douglas story is told by Duane Eddy. They were in studio finishing up an early 60s album needing about 7 or 8 minutes of music with plenty of options on the table. Steve told Duane he'd learned Peter Gunn the night before. Duane said something like that's nice Steve and moved along. So the day went on and they still needed some finishing music and Steve suggested they end it with Peter Gunn. Duane figured what the heck, the sax player learned a TV theme, sheesh patronize him and give it a go. Well, they like it and it made the album. It then became Duane Eddy's biggest hit, and I know you know it, but now you know it a little differently. If you listen, it's mostly Eddy providing rhythm, bad### baritone rhythm, and backing Steven Douglas.

You know, outside the top 100 for the year might actually be better. Easier to search and opens up some lesser songs that barely charted.
