DR★ Music Draft reopened: make any outstanding picks and let's talk about the next draft (1 Viewer)

ok... hopefully she hasn't been taken- I had a plan for her to mix in and do some crazy lead and backing vocals with what I've got lined up (less likely to be taken later). of all the soul/r&b singers out there with the pipes, I freaking love etta for sheer all out rock chops. if anybody's going to sing and sling along with this group I'm assembling, it's her.

7... etta james... singer (what'd I say- live in SF)

You don't really want to know, do you?

Not your day

Etta James Rocks the House is the first live album by American singer Etta James and her fifth album overall. It was recorded live on the nights of September 27 and 28, 1963 at the New Era Club in Nashville, Tennessee and released in 1964

I loved that song back when I was growing up. Radio did, too.
Backing bands doing steps in unison like that have gone out of style but it's great schtick.  We saw an opening act (Bad Rabbits out of Boston) do that at a show a few years ago and it brought the house down.

ok.

kick out the jams, mother ####ers.

7... Rob Tyner... singer

8... Rob Tyner's fro... extra musical instrument

eta. but I object to the etta james pick. she would've made the whole thing go together just right.

If you haven't picked for rounds 1-7, go ahead and post your pick now.

Round 8 picks can be made after sunrise Saturday unless you're Norwood and want to kvetch about it.

I'm going to make her the biggest rock star, ever.

The rest of my draft will consist of drafting another guitar player, a drummer, a composer and an other to build around her as the centerpiece.

7.3 song Purple Rain Out of the Rain

Looks like my band will be sporting two drummers too, as I just discovered that Country **** knows his way around a drum kit too. The more you know. Will probably make a pretty good bouncer too.

I'll write this one up later, but wanted to make sure I snagged him while he was still out there. I think he's out there, I searched thru the spreadsheet and the thread, but I may have missed him.

7.11 - Guitar - George Harrison (The Beatles)

not today ... i be in Hoboken

?anybody heeeere/seen my old friend Jello/can you yell me where he's gone??

and, on that note - suggestion for satellite category songs about dead people (person).
This whole exchange took me a minute.

Oh, God, what an awful-### song.

7.05 Kristy MacColl   "Fairytale Of New York" (vocalist)

gonna need someone to keep those wayward bastids i drafted in line, and who better than a tough as nails British lass who stood toe to toe with none other than legendary hell raiser Shane McGowan - the fact that she winds up in his arms at the end, rather than the ER, speaks volumes    this selection also allows me to pay tribute to the NYC Irish, and to honor one of the most incredible ladies to ever grace our presence - such a tragic end to a beautiful old soul's life.

she is most known from her guest appearance here, but, she had herself a nice little pop career pre and post Pogues. her marriage to powerhouse producer Steve Lilywhite certainly helped, and she guested on work by artists such as the Smiths, Robert Plant, Talking Heads, Shriekback, Big Country, Abba, the Wonder Stuff, Simple Minds ...

this is painful to recount, but - of all the folks chosen in this draft so far, the circumstance of her death is certainly the most heart breaking ... while vacationing in Mexico, a powerboat strayed into waters reserved for swimmers - in the act of saving her son's life she was killed instantly, as she stood in front and pushed him away to safety  :(  just inexplicable sadness there, i can't even. damn. God bless her.

on a personal note, regarding this song, my Grandfather on my mom's side emigrated here in 1916 (post Easter Rebellion), from County Clare ... and on the ship, yes, they were regaled with tales of "streets paved with gold" (though the lyric here says 'rivers') - needless to say, arriving to the Irish slums of NYC proved far from that.  but the resiliency to make the most of even the most dire situations kept him going ... evident in the two fisted fighting spirit up in this tune - yeah, the 'drunk tank' (much like the 'Paddy Wagon') invented back in the day to corral those crazy Irish newcomers.

oh, and NYC ... my love affair continues.

Where's me gold.

:(

meh, not diggin' the disrespect of the Irish here.

have a good one, folks.
I'm sorry GB. GB fellow eyetalian/Irishman Kafka, with whom I regularly offer such low brow digs (in the purest love and respect) is out of commission for a bit. I couldn't resist this morning... but know it also comes from a place of love and respect, so I'll cease and desist... Even though such things make me giggle more than they should

Sun has risen, so even though I'm not done apologizing, I'm picking.

Vocal chops are nil. He's not going to find any nice harmonies or hit any notes outside of a few, but this is the guy I want front and center to carve the sound and tone out... and then make fun of him when he has an epileptic seizure, because that's what I do.

8.... Ian Curtis... Singer

For @rockaction and I:

8th round Ornette Coleman on sax/trumpet/violin

Ramblin'

Jazz trailblazer will sound just fine in an eccentric Lou Reed offense with  Moon behind center and Amy, Nina and Ray deployed wide.

Just woke up to find this. Must have sonar. Thrilled with this. Better than even the shape that we sketched. If it sounds like so much backpatting, make the most of it.

Thanks for the selection, man.

I almost had him in the first round just so I could play this. Two-fer.

Thursday - Ian Curtis
